I’m chomping at the bit for a listen to the new album .
Just a heads up, I have a wondful young folk singer/songwriter from Leitrim called Eoin Kenny, performing in the 4 Provinces in Kimmage on Saturday night, I think it will be a name we will be hearing a lot more of in the future.
Check out his music on the socail media’s if you get a minute.
Keep well,
Kind regards
Jason.

Hello Christy,
A Terrible Beauty.
That’s a gorgeous title. And my guess was very distant, wasn’t it.
The cover looks beautiful too. Looking forward to getting a closer look.
A book arrived here yesterday. The Heartbeat of Irish music by Christy McNamara and Peter Woods. Stuffed full of his beautiful pictures. I was so busy looking at them I haven’t read any of the words yet.
Dear Christy,

Well Christy , a magical weekend in the 32 counties.
Pool on a table that takes old 20p’s and some Cork dry in Brennan’s of Old Kilcullen.
Stew in Bellaghy round a kitchen table with chatter and awe.
Porter and ‘irish ways and irish laws’ in the Cross Keys at Toomebridge.
Jerry hannon roaring them home at Leopardstown and the Curragh.
Par 3 mayhem on the course at Athgarvan.
Respect paid to Rody McCorley and in the Bellaghy cemetery.
Sand , punts and surf flying under a blue sky in Laytown.
Plenty CM, Seamus Heaney/Liam O’Flynn and and Squeeze on the cd player with LMFM & KFM on the radio…….if Carlsberg made long weekends.
Rory

theres a man that knows how to get the best out of a weekend…good man Rory…I hope you did not break any speed limits
Hello Christy,
I had a good time at the Topic Zoom session last night. A great mixture of people, poets, fiddlers, songsters with guitars, songsters without guitars, plus me. Sang Scarborough Fair and Spancill Hill. They asked to come and sing at the Topic, and at The Panther Club in Cleckheaton. There were a couple at the session who zapped in from Derby. Steve and Julie Wigley. They sing around the folk clubs and festivals since she took early retirement. They sang her own songs. I liked them a lot. Hope to hear them again.
My first box of vegetables from Oddbox appeared this morning. Wonky veg the supermarkets have rejected. It’s looking good. I feel a batch of soup coming on.

happy singing, hearthy soup, you’re flying….The Topic and The Panther…sounds great
Just read your comment about treasure…couldn’t agree more, and so often this brilliant forum is involved…
I missed the gigs with Terry and companeros, but wonder if our paths crossed later?
Yesterday turned into an ace music day, starting here, being reminded of the lovely’Rocks of Bawn’…awhile later,In a charity shop,I got Pauline Scanlon’s ‘red colour sun’ and played her fab acapella ‘The boys of Barr na Sraide’ a good few times in the afternoon.
By tea time,it’s ALLloyd, thanks to Kevin’s ‘Paddy West’ find…Then Cyril Tawney came to mind. Never met him,but knew his brother,Archie in 1980s Tameside folk clubs (as Terry might have done?)He was a great singer too and loved a floor spot to feature one of his brother’s songs. Before saying the title,Archie’s party piece was announcing ‘I used to share a bed with the author of this next song’…
Not much online about Cyril Tawney, but as an ex British Navy sailor,he crafted some brilliant, poignant songs…
Sally Free and Easy and The Oggie Man finished my day…the latter by June Tabor ‘gets’ me every time…I headed for my bunk and had the best kip in ages!
A few minutes ago,I looked on YouTube for AL Lloyd…there’s a film that will be watched later…from Australian TV,late 60s,with Ian Turner,’Ten Thousand Miles’…viva YouTube, but it’s not a patch on the crack that can be had here!
Thanks and all the best
Dave

Really looking forward to Thursdays concert especially after last year.
I’ve been listening to Planxty a lot recently and Planxty Live has an amazing vide compared to the other CDs. .Every track is magic..
Hope the new CD goes well.

You got me thinking of those stellar 1967 Thursday night gigs at The Crown & Anchor, back of Manchester Piccadilly….the excitement in that room as Eamon Clinch & Gerry Brady fronted you Four Shelmaliers to create that Beggarmen sound….Jasus Terry I used to be in my element, quaffing Wilsons Ale,rockin to you guys and eying the room…..then ye gave me a gig….I was on my way
Ah no way..thanks very much! Well done to the others who had correct entries. I lifted the guitar to learn all three this morning..and in learning about how Bob came across the melody on a visit to London in 1962, found this song by Ewan MacColl to the same melody..https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-epz1_jh7EQ

Thanks for this gem,,,Paddy West sung by Bert Lloyd….never heard this before Kevin…what a blast ! I’ve always loved Bert’s singing and his concertina accompaniment…..I heard him once somewhere, cant remember where, (maybe Keele Festival 1966 where I also heard The McPeakes.)..then another time we happened to be on the same train heading for London…I took a chance and said hello, I sat in beside him and the journey rolled past as we talked of songs and singers…
It reminds me of another time I met John Peel on the Liverpool Boat….he had played Planxty on his radio show so I took a chance and said hello…turned into one of the most enjoyable voyages a man could sail…what a great old chat we had..in an inst were were tying up on Liverpool Dock
A.L. Lloyd…a top man and a mighty singer
What a morning!
Rocks of Bawn came quickly and I’m walking round, humming and warbling the air…might be slightly different, but (for sanity and caffeine needed)I’ll go for I pity the poor Immigrant …Bob can swipe a trad tune whever he fancies…
All the best

Give him a good feed of oats

On a separate note, I see Johnny Doyle hung up the boots. Was lucky to have played (struggled) against him a couple of times. Some servant to Kildare, Allenwood and a fine role model for anyone who plays the game. Best of luck to him.
“There’s a beautiful bog near Allenwood, where Johnny Doyle is King..”
Christy's reply
Johnny himself is a regular listener..a Lily White songster prepared to don the Flourbag and leave the Short Grass in search of de craic
Ah it’s hard to beat the song talk.. and it’s hard to guess the answers to your competitions!..I have three that I suspect might come close.. “90 Miles from Dublin”,”Pity The Poor Immigrant” and, “Rocks of Bawn” (though I know you sang the latter, I don’t think you recorded it, so the first two for entry..)
Christy's reply
I declare Kevin Meehan to be the winner with swift and correct response….a plectrum will be chosen, carefully embossed and deliverooed to Sweet Cavan of The Lakes
Hello Christy,
A very good morning to you.
I think I know one of the songs, but not the second.

But you really should.
I know you could record baa baa feckin black sheep and it would be a hit but you singing a verse of T&H on Luke’s documentary leaves us needing more.
You can still put baa baa black sheep on the other side to be sure it’s a successful record
