Always a buzz when you mention the Manchester suburbs and folk clubs you remember so well. Today, bathed in Autumn sun…I’m walking by the Brgewater Canal en route to collect grandkids from school.
As so often,my mind wanders back to times of music and ale over half a century ago..and it’s brilliant that in our eighth decade, there’ll soon be another Christy Moore album to savour!
Just back from the trip home to Ireland and slogging away back at work here in Basque land. Only getting around now to scribbling down a few words of thanks for the wonderful gig at the Knocknarea Arena a couple of weeks back.
It was great to hear the old favourites and the new material. Fair play to you. Among the highlights was the way you matched the Planxty ‘banter’ with Liam Óg’s ‘chanter’. Loved that!
A big thanks also for the shout out to me and the wife; I guessed (rightly) that it was the brother Séamie who put you up to it! God, he’s the divil! It meant a lot too to hear my Dad’s name called out loud and clear in the Sligo air.
Go raibh míle maith agat.
Christy's reply
I met your Dad the very first time I played in Sligo..back in 1972 with Planxty…..himself and Liam Óg had a few tunes after…I was trying to vamp on the bull fiddle…best wishes to you and all the Family…I hope the Bombardes are not blowin the head off you
Hi Christy!
Hope you’re well.
Coming to see you on Thursday 28th November in Vicar Street with my wife Clíodhna – Can’t wait!
For some reason I’ve been listening to Little Musgrave since I got our tickets. It is such a beautiful song – makes me feel warm inside!
Would love to hear it on the night if you’ve room on the playlist! For my late mum, Clare x
Rise up Rise up Little Musgrave!
Cheers Christy

Lisa Knapp and Gerry Diver…I look forward to hearing that….
Pre order placed Christy. Not sure if I am in the first 300 for a signed lyric sheet, but what the heck! The fascinating set of songs will warm the heart’s cockles ! And a very interesting historic choice of name! Shades of WB Yeats and Keith Farrell…I’d love to hear the back story on that choice!
Beautiful evocative cover, another brilliant road scene from Martin, reminds me of the word picture Pádraig Ó Conaire ‘painted’ when he described the view from a country road of Dublin burning in 1916.
Looking forward to catching one of the Vicar St gigs!
Enjoy Bundoran, I used to love when Daddy drove us to Bundoran, coming in the Old Road, and suddenly there was the Atlantic, lashing up against the Bundoran shore! Mighty, majestic.
Let the music keep all spirits high.
Christy's reply
The back story is simple….it being the title of Martin Gale’s powerful picture….found it on the wall of a Dublin Gallery….sleeve image and title realised in an inst…managed to get the picture …contacted Martin who graciously allowed us to reproduce it on the cover of this album….
Indian summer in Oostende, lovely. All terraces full of happy people. Permeke, Spilliaert, Ensor. New cd Christy Moore ordered. What else do you need to be happy! 😎
Hi Christy,
Its all so exciting regards the new album, and the anticipation is growing by the day. Incredible sleeve cover and title……….and as for the songs selected what is there to say, other than we have had the great privilege to hear them live at the Gigs in recent times. As Vicar street comes around the corner again, I’ve no doubt each of them will get a rapturous reception.
Ride on.
Patsy

you cant bate the bit of rapture Patsy..hard enough to come by …sometimes found in the strangest places..the old Hogan Stand, early Chipper’s ( in my case Mrs Dunnes down the back Street, fourpence a bag 1959) ,The Hanged Man’s pub Miltown circa 1962 when Frank Kelly was the proprietor ( ah come on lads, the Sergeant’s outside) McDaid’s 1972…..Hammersmith Odeon 1978
So lovely to hear the chat on radio today about the new album…both Louise Duffy and Ray D’Arcy gave huge mentions and both played Black and Amber, which has lovely BV’s/harmonies on….12 gigs, One Album, thousands upon thousands of happy listeners, all looking forward to ‘A Terrible Beauty’. Huge congratulations on another LP…a good news day in the music world…sweet music roll on the 1st of November..xx

Dear Christy. Work on the album finished. Congratulation. Recieving the Claddagh Records newsletter today and then looking at your website for confirmation . 🙂 Great title, great cover, 13 songs. Wow. Waiting for Nov.1st. All the best, Günter

Good man Gunter….sorry, I dont know how to get two dots over U….is that trick specific to German devices…. we use the “fada” here Á É, Í, Ó, Ú….we once had our own beautiful lettering….the bungling bureaucrats banned our unique hierographics to suit anglo typewriter salespersons…. my late friend Art Ó’Broin had an Irish language typewriter…anyone got one for sale?….I illustrated our old Gaelic lettering on page 3 of the booklet which accompanies the 2005 album “Burning Times”
Hi Christy, I wrote a song a few years ago that was recorded for an intended EP release, but we never got around to it. Could I send you a link to take a listen as I think it would suit your singing voice and style. Who should I send the link to?
Well Christy,
Just picked up the new album there. I’m beyond psyched to hear it. The cover is fantastic, and really hit me. It’s very similar to a painting that hung in my grandmother’s house that I always associated with the song The Piper’s Path, which is one of my favourite songs you sing. Can’t wait to hear the album and look forward to seeing you soon. PS Doc is flying! PPS I’m still loving Flying Into Mystery, which I regard as your Leonard Cohen album 🙂 Hope all well. Ride on
Christy's reply
The Piper’s Path….thanks for that…such a beautiful song from Lal Waterson….greetings to all songsters on Chapel Lane and “up the town”
Deliveroo man arrived early carrying a carefully embossed plectrum. Greatly appreciated. Later the news of your new album, “A Terrible Beauty” came. The title reminded me of the ‘Faithful Departed’ line ‘your terrible beauty’s been torn’. The cover is intriguing. Is it by Martin Gale? Look forward to listening and learning. Hup!

ey up our kid
Hi ,
Hope alls well
For some reason I didn’t receive a presale for vicar st
Would it be possible to receive one
TY
I had the same problem myself last week….I had to climb over the wall to catch Taylor Swift…feckin grazed me knee caps
Beautiful Bundoran by the silvery sea , must’ve been a day like this when that one was penned.
Just wrapping up at work then home for the spuds….. tie the surf board on top of the van (probably won’t have the 14 pints of stout ) and away we go.
A Terrible Beauty , a very Irish kind of description….. especially in Yeats’ poetry. November Man will be welcome this year.
I remember too a book of photographic and historical references of Ireland by Jill and Leon Uris similarly Titled.
its the way we say it that counts
Howya Christy!

Anyone have any idea how to get access to the Vicar Street artist presale tomorrow morning?
Is it via the newsletter and if so, I assume it’s too late to sign up to the newsletter now and get the access code?
Thanks all!
