Ah, those union men and regulations.
Boole 4, UCC, late eighties, Christy on-stage, not long, I think you opened with ‘Biko Drum’. Lo and behold, the lights went out! Black darkness, oh my God I thought, we could hear you talking in the darkness. You quickly regrouped, off you began: ‘Irish Ways and Irish Laws’ in the dark. Well it worked, I think from then you ‘had’ this audience. Huge round of applause, then very shortly we got our light back.
Do you remember it?
Christy's reply
now I recall that UCC blackout….another notable power cut was in CJ ‘s in Salthill..another one in The Grand Hortel, Malahide..yet another in Sherkin Island at a famed Festival…anyone here remember that event, poss circa 1982?
Clannad, De Danann and The Bothy Band also on that bill plus the Psilocybin Céilí Band, Natie Comerford, Norman King was an outstanding MC and Sean Ó’Neill’s was the centre of all cultural activities…Sherkin was the centre of The Universe for the weekend
Hi C mention of that Sunday gig in Bath piqued my curiosity and I went searching, it was part of a 4 gig tour of Wales in May 2013 starting in Ryhl a town full of seagulls and very windy but a brilliant audience, then it was Hay on Wye for a great gig in that fascinating Festival, my first time there but I have returned since. Then it was off to beautiful Bath which was an amazing gig with such gems as Daleman’s Litany, Little Musgrave and 16 Fisherman Raving, then the final gig of the tour in Newport one of the most lonesome towns I was ever in but a lovely venue with another wonderful audience. I recall Brian Kuin did the tour with his Welsh connections, when we got to Newport we discovered that there was one or 2 rows at the front of the stage with empty seats so the 4711ers all got upgraded !! enjoy night 4 of Vicar St, safe travelling all in these cold conditions. Beir bua agus beannacht. H
Christy's reply
Fair Play H..
was that last gig in Newport or was it Barry ? or maybe they are the same neck of the woods..like Dublin and Clontarf….I also remember Aberystwyth, then Johnny ran out of juice on the way to Holyhead..also Colwyn Bay and a Timber theatre in Prestatyn..not forgetting manys the night in St David’s Hall in Cardiff…
My Dad was listening to you on Oliver Callan during the week when you mentioned you now have 3 generations of families coming to your gigs and he asked me to share with you our story of 3 generations coming to see you.
My father first saw you in the Castlemor in Ballaghadereen in 1983 and has been following you ever since. He is a huge fan and as a result myself and my siblings are too and now my own children. My 6 and 3 year olds do be singing out ‘Ordinary Man’ on the school run!
We were at your gig in The TF in Castlebar this time last year. My brother was home from Australia and the whole family had tickets. I had just had a new baby and didn’t want to miss out but couldn’t leave him so we brought him along!
Dad was wondering if he was your youngest fan to see you live. Baby Rua at 4 weeks old and he loved every minute of it!!
Christy's reply
Rua holds the accolade for now…..Good Man Rua !
That said…a listener went into labour during a gig at a Festival in Belgium in the 1990s…her baby delivered in the red cross tent behind the marquee… and duly christened Christy
Christy, dagrab kindly sent me the link to the jean charles de menezes programme on C4.
Exactly why we needed an interview with tony Blair is a moote point.
Some of the ‘innocent errors’ that the police claimed rang hollow.
Then detail of the poor man’s body parts were referred to more than once….hollow point….horrendous.
Thank goodness that Chris Wood’s song is there to properly remind us of the innocent victim.

Hello Christy,
Hope things are well with you.
Lots of talk about past, present and future gigs here. Given a kind and prevailing wind, we’ll be in Vicar Street on 5th and 12th January. Stage right, row two and then row three. We’re staying in Clare but doing a couple of flits up the country to see you and spend a night in Dublin.
Hank Wedel’s Listen is such a gorgeous song. As soon as I’ve got my left hand to behave itself I’ll take a quick recording and let you have a listen.
Listen to the ringing of distant bells calling
Listen to the flutter of an angel wings on high
Listen to the rapping and the clapping and the buzzing
Listen to the snow fall gently on the mining town
Sounds like here.
Went out to post some stuff to the solicitor a few minutes ago. An old guy crossing the road said,
You look like a wizard, can you magic me somewhere warmer.
I was wearing my coat with dragons on it.

that line got me..still does…. Hank Wedell’s “Listen” is a beautiful song..I always thought it would click but it never caught on….Paul Doran’s “The Gardener” is another….
thats the way it goes… we never know whats gonna hit home, for what reason,
its all part of the wonder
I think that Royal Festival Hall gig came up here previously. Did the Hall (disgruntled) staff think you’d gone over time and switched off the lights?! And you went on however without lights.
“In your town tonight,” as Jimmy Crowley might declare. But in your case ‘without lighting’. Was it an era when British-Irish relations were at a more delicate stage?
Christy's reply
I recall their action….they were a mean spirited bunch..they spouted Union regulations but I did not believe them

Location: Vicar Street Thursday 7th November - Thank you Christy from Sile and Richard
Go raibh mile, mile maith agat Christy. What a brilliant concert and a wonderful dedication -it was overwhelming and will stay with me forever.
And thanks to Hilary for linking me to you like this and for the recordings and photos too. Already many of my family and friends have heard all about the evening, and yes we’ll keep coming back.
Its hard to beleive so many years have passed since I first heard you sing in Liberty Hall. So many great memories – I’ll just mention a couple. One was was when you came to Festival Hall (possibly for the first time?) . At 10pm sharp they turned off the sound. You were not happy so you got up and sang the Ballad of James Connelly unaccompanied and without amps. What can I say – it sent shivers down my spine. Another was when Moving Hears played on Kilburn High Road, where I was living. Such energy and joy (though I still prefer the slow version of Nancy Spain!).
We were all so young but your values still ‘.shine on’. Now that reminds me of another song (Shine on you crazy Diamond). We heard you perform for the first time at a little theatre in Bath. Mesmerising…
Let the music keep your spirits high’.
With warm wishes and gratitude.
Sile and Richard too
Christy's reply
Sile,
if memory serves it was a GLC gig against Racism….Ken Livingstone was rattlin the racists and I did a couple of gigs when asked……back then The RFH stage crew were not as welcoming as those good crew people in later years….they pulled the plug when I was invited to encore….I was working with Jim Donohoe who was my sound engineer. …I came back out on stage and Jim came forward with his torch….no PA, no lights…just Patrick Galvin’s song…”Where is our James Connolly” a thousand listeners and Jim’s torch….
in earlier years Moving Hearts played The National Ballroom in Kilburn…we were booked by Kevin (Lofty) Flynn…it was a hefty gig
I also recall that beautiful Theatre in Bath…it was a Sunday night gig, the audience
was exceptional….
you certainly qualify as a long haul listener …from Liberty Hall to Vicar Street and many places in between….
Hello Christy, given the brilliant array of subjects we discuss on here I hope you will indulge me in mentioning the retirement of Dublin Senior Footballer Brian Fenton. I’ve been to one of two of the celebrations over the years and heard many a Christy tune belted out at them. The boys love the ballads and I know you love the GAA. All other Counties will be happy to see Brian retire but it’s a tough day for Dubs supporters. A top class player.
Christy's reply
Dear Fulforward…
I wish Brian Fenton an happy, peaceful and successful retirement….
the mention of number fourteen brings me right back to 1959 when Patrician Brothers School Newbridge won the County Kildare u14 Schools Championship. It was held in Naas. Our opponents were the Rural Champion Caragh ( we won the Urban)
It was a grand Summer’s evening as Newbridge took the spoils..there was a fracas on the sideline apres match when Caragh mothers maintained that our full forward was not u14…..his Mother intervened and it came to the verge until the Parish Priest intervened and poured holy waters on the pending riot…
Booked the annual pilgrimage to Ireland 🇮🇪 for the our fix….Westport, Dublin, Castlebar …..wherever we get “Christy” tickets….this time it’s the The Kingdom… we are off to Killarne 2025… will get on to ye with an ol’request closer to the day …. Keep shining
🎶 might be Marty again x
Christy's reply
Killarney has a ring to it….Lakes, Horses (with Nappies),The Gooch, more Hotels than Vegas, great welcome guaranteed, I loves Killarney, its a town like no other, the old Gleneagles room was a favourite in the 80s & 90s….now the INEC always sparkles in the diary..
we recorded the “Ride On” album there 40 years ago… out in Muckross Cottages..got barred outa Danny Mann’s , Dr Vibes on the Brandy, some of us at the marching powders,…the midges on Mangerton would ate you alive
Hi Christy
I hope all shows are going well as they can, I missed out last Thursday however i’ll be up Wednesday. From what i’ve seen from sources online, the shows are going well. I hope you’re in good voice and feeling well for the remainder of the shows. I’m looking forward to seeing the great vicar st, i’ve heard so much about it so i’m excited to see what makes it special. I’m not sure if it’s the venue, the stage or the crowd, perhaps the whole package.
It’ll be my third occasion at the show, first in lyrath, then again in the opera hall, yet each show is different.
I’m not sure if the request book is filled up, but if it wasn’t already on the setlist would you mind squeezing in something from Shane MacGowan?
I’ll see you wednesday, beir bua agus beannacht.
Christy's reply
Morra Matty…anything can happen when the lights go down
One Christmas when my kids were young, there were times of gut busting laughter…the source was a video of ‘D’Unbelievables’,sent by cousins in Ireland…only this and ‘Father Ted’s caused such a response…Jon Kenny was involved in both and it’s very sad to read of his passing…RIP and great thanks for his talent.
Good points by Rory…what my parents called ‘common decency’ is sadly absent at times when it should be a basic…years ago,the most senior figure in the US mocked a disabled journalist who had asked a question at a press conference. As more enlightened observers said – that action alone should have made him a pariah. But…
All the best

Jon Kenny was a unique talent and a lovely man…may he rest in peace

Do i walk on looking down at my phone or stop, look and listen?

Hi Christy, when I watched the promo video again I noticed that there were some references to other songs for example, the Palestina flag and the Lyra posters. Maybe also others??
Lyra reminds me of an article I read, showing that since 2006 85% of murders on journalists go unpunished! Incomprehensible anyway. So, this is it for today, good night.

Like a busker down at Puck Fair in Killorglin
an old tangler at the Fair of Spancilhill

Hi Christy, sitting here listening to A Terrible Beauty and wondering if you are ever going to come back to the Vale of Honey for an auld gig. I know you are doing The marquee in Cork, but that wouldn’t be a patch in being up close and personal in The Talbot hotel in Clonmel. Some lovely tracks on the new album.
Take care a while and mind yourself.
Best wishes from Ardfinnan.
