That oul incense sure is thurible stuff indeed Christy! I always liked Joyces meaning of “ringing the bell” in Ulysses, or as he puts it, “Sonnez La Cloche”! That’s what I always think of now when memory’s come back of a little tinkle on the alter!
I see Diageo are up to their old tricks again trying to hijack St Stephen’s Day now!

Hello Christy,
Well, Steve is safely retired. All to play for now! So far he says every day feels like Sunday afternoon.
Did anyone here have a look at the Moving Hearts clip I posted. I was mesmerised by it. Never heard pipes plated like that before. Wow!

How ya Christy?! I messaged you a few years ago about a friend of mine in the Marron family here in the north east of England and you gave such a sweet reply for my friend john’s birthday! Thanks a million for that! Now he recommended I should send you one of my songs called ‘SOS NHS’… about the pitiful state of the service. Working as a nurse , I know it first hand and wrote this during the pandemic. Anyway , so taking my friends advice , I’m sending it to you here! Hope you enjoy! All the best xx
Hi Christy, heading to the gig on the 30th of December in Vicar Street with the whole family. The five of us have been going to the gigs as a family for the last decade. It has become such a lovely tradition at Christmas time for us. This year our mother Ann has retired. Your gig is the only one she looks forward to every year. She is an absolute saint. Ann is also a proud Leitrim woman and in particular comes from just outside Ballinamore. It would absolutely make her year if you could play Ballinamore on the 30th. Loving the new album. Well wishes from the O’Donnell’s
Christy's reply
Well Nialler…will try and fit in a call out ….but I stopped singing that song a few years back..
A great piece of writing by Fintan Vallely , I sang it on and off for years….until a few years ago I saw a doc about Don Tidey….the tragic deaths of Garda Gary Sheehan and Army Private Patrick Kelly really struck home….I’ve not sung it since
Hi Christy, ‘twould be grand to be in Dublin tonight. A great concert being staged in the Helix, with Mary Black and Mary Coughlan, among many others, including the RTÉ strings….
Sing for Simon…..a truly great cause, I used to work with Simon back in the day, now seems to be needed more than ever.
Christy's reply
Thanks Pat..
A timely reminder for Tonights gig in The Helix for the Simon Community…
Hello Christy, had the pleasure to go and see the great John Spillane playing in the Duncairn centre in North Belfast last Saturday. A beautiful building which I believe may have been an old deconsecrated Presbyterian Church, and is now a culture hub for North Belfast. As ever, John was in fine form and there was something special hearing the lyrics of “Passage West” belted out within ear-shot of the New Lodge.
Christy's reply
for many years now John Spillane has been writing, recording and gigging beautiful poetic songs with lovely melodies…his voice and guitar playing unique and in perfect harmony….on top of that he is mighty craic, true and generous….I’ve had the good fortune to sing a brace of his songs…his “Gortatagort”, “Magic Nights in The Lobby Bar” and “Patrick Murphy” are all so beautiful to sing…on top of all that I value him as a friend….
Ah, if four songs from Wally extend the gig a bit longer and we miss Burdock’s….so be it…that was a beautiful tribute again to Wal….long may he be remembered. I love to look around a gig and see so many younger heads singing along to the songs, puts a smile on me face….a few pause in set I was dyin to shout out for Gortatogart or Before The Deluge…they were on my mind…but every time I hear Nancy Spain it reminds me of being 13 years of age and being allowed stay out late during the summer when we used to light fires behind the Martello tower here in Williamstown (No 15 of 22)…and a trainee Garda at the time was in digs across the road had a 12 string guitar and he used to sing that…I had to find out more then…and led to my first CM gig in Carysfort College/Convent…haven’t looked back…think he’s a chief super now…thanks for another beautiful night… Finglas boys to be…
Christy's reply
I spotted you there last night Larball..lookin fit and healthy….keep doin the press-iups

Hi Christy,
For many reasons I needed the “Medication “ of a Gig, and Boy did you deliver it tonight. Fantastic night with a wonderful set list delivered with aplom by yourself. Great to see Wallys songs featured.
A well behaved and supportive audience too. HQ is such a special place.
Thanks a million Christy.

That was some gig tonight Christy, you had the full gamut of emotions covered tonight, fair play to you.
Thank you so much for the shout out tonight, made a fantastic gig even more special. The setlist is stowed away safely in the bag, no baggage handlers will be getting their mitts on this one!
I’d love to be peeking over the barrier at the Barrowland again whenever you can make it over, honestly some of the new songs would absolutely fly there. Oh to be serenaded out by the Lonesome Boatman again!
Final thought is just to thank Hilary for the kindness and generosity that she extends to other listeners, in this case, so I could end my year on a high. Shes always there supporting you as well, a gem of a woman.
Christy's reply
I spotted you straight away at table H…..you were always at the front in Mags McIvor’s….great to have a Clydeside listener on The Liffey Banks….thanks for making the trip….
I’ll never forget the Barrowland Choir harmonising the Lonesome Boatman as they exited the Carousel of Healing…..what an end to a gig…..and last night the Vicarage choir exited with Christmas Eve in the drunk tank….I’m still buzzin !
I performed them all C. I happened to be there during the majority of the changes, liturgy and whatever. I left the thurible artistry to someone else. One day, having thought I’d mastered the intricacy of the altar facing the congregation, alas all the altar servers were on one side of the priest; crisis. We got over it and the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith in Rome werent consulted to charge us with heresy or some such crime.

Hi Christy,
My Daddy, Joe Kelly from Skerries, north of Dublin, met you once in NZ with Billy Beggs. He was a huge fan of yours. Sadl,y he passed away at 84 years old in July this year – he was knocked off his e-bike. He has lived in New Zealand most of his life, married to Kath, he had three children and 6 grandchildren. He loved all your songs especially your beautiful song “The Voyage” and said it was his story. We played it at his funeral.
Joe’s eldest granddaughter Jessica Dean is currently living in Dublin and would dearly love to see you live. Unfortunately all your gigs are sold out. Is there anyway she can get a cheeky ticket?? (If you don’t ask you don’t get) Jessica’s email is jesssdeannn@gmail.com. Joe Kelly will be looking down from Heaven…smiling at you Christy
Many Thanks

Hi Christy,
I am back in the old homestead whilst my brother is back in the air heading home to Perth WA …..which was an amazing feat to come to Zagreb solely to see the great Glasgow Celtic play.
We enjoyed the trip, wandering the old city, catching up , a few beers in smoke filled bars, local calimari, enjoying the open air markets, the city is a mix of national pride, catholic icon reverence, architecture, tunnels, cold war blocks , wealth and decay.
The fitba ground was damaged by an earthquake so only 3 of the 4 stands were open, no roofs on any, we were in the back row of the upper deck which was bracing ….especially for a lad from the hottest city on earth today, from 4° in Zagreb to 40° in Perth!
Anyway getting to the musical point we went to the Museum of New Wave Music in Zagreb, run by 2 very friendly guys who gave us a complimentary beer ( which no doubt helped the shopping spend in their tiny makeshift shop), lots of photos, recording equipment, magazines, 45s, setlists and tapes ( with a pencil in one hole to wind it) etc. There were piles of old NME and Sounds music papers from late 70s and early 80s, in which Dexys Midnight Runners, Stranglers, UB40, Ian Dury , Lee Scratch Perry and the Undertones etc featured somewhat more than yourself , and i could have sat there all day reading and reminiscing.
A fine trip. Rory

Nollaig Shona Christy,
I am over the moon happy to say Santa arrived early for me, as I have a place to sit and enjoy your company on June 20th Castlebar. Back to the internet to see if i can see you somewhere else while I am wondering around Ireland in June.
All the best,

Ringing the bell and swinging the thurible. I rang the bell in my time, but left the fine art of swinging the thurible to someone else more ‘up’ on that task.
Christy's reply
Gotta say Ed…swingin the Thurible wasa coveted gig at Benediction and Funerals…if you managed to get those coals angry red and if the sky pilot heaped on the frankinsense there would be a might cloud of smoke created….I once went for the 360 degree swaing at a Funeral service and the feckin cortege were coughin their rings up,,there were various dutys around alter boy stuff…ringin the consecration bell, lighting and extinguishing candles, the Sunday collections, holding the patten for communion…some awesome mouth gazing….there was a few bob to be had for funerals and weddings,,,
but nothing compared to the buzz of swinging that thurible
Just a note to let you know I’ll be hosting the last gig of 2024 in The Four Provinces, Kimmage, on this Saturday night and delighted to say we have the amazing Macdara Yeates.
Wishing you the crew and the clan a very Happy Christmas.
Best wishes

Hello Christy,
So I put my ear to Hamish’s guitar. I’m liking everything he does. Great rhythm, not over done. All lovely! He made a lot of albums, didnt he, so lots so explore. Discogs is a treasure trove, I’ll be looking for them there.
Plenty of his stuff on Spotify, as you said. Managed to get it to play Black is the Colour. Very different to your’s. I love both versions. He has some bluesy stuff going on, doesn’t he.
I don’t have a Spotify subscription so it can be pretty random what it plays for me. Sometimes it gives me what I ask for, sometimes it chooses something completely different and won’t budge.

Reading Dylan’s words in your reply,I’m reminded of a highlight from a Bridgewater Hall night,a few years back.
A highlight because it’s a mighty song, performed brilliantly,in perfect acoustics,to a hushed audience…I’d no idea you gigged ‘I pity the poor immigrant’…but I’ll always be glad you did…andI was there to hear it.
Early reviews of the Dylan bio pic are encouraging….I’m looking forward to seeing it.Am sure there’ll be some chat about it!
