Hiya, looking forward to tomorrow, third time seeing you on this run but tomorrow is special, I’ll be there with my wife , Anna and my eldest son, Emmet’ and his girlfriend , Rosario, from Bolivia, who is seeing you for the first time ever, proud to say she was coverted to your music in my house.
Hello Christy,
A new book arrived here yesterday. It happens regularly, but this was a special one. A 1960 copy of The Singing Island. Scottish and English songs compiled by Peggy Seeger and Ewan MacColl.
It’s got a version of Scarborough Fair in it, collected in 1947 from a Yorkshire lead miner called Mark Anderson. 8 verses and a source!!!
That gig of yours last Sunday. I turned up to it feeling like a drowned rat. Usually I’m jealous that I’m not on the stage, but that was the last place I wanted to be. Talk about carousel of healing! Give it half a dozen songs and I was cured! Buzzing along with the wild creativity. Hope tomorrow does the same for plenty more people.
You are very busy right now. 20 songs got down in a day, and writing too. Plenty of rugby to distract yesterday. I’m guessing it didn’t. Me and the guitar are feeling much more comfortable with each other. I feel like my hands are starting to know the shapes of it. Loving it.
Dec 28, 2024… “Fin will do a great version…
just feed him your fresh new-mown hay (dont be givin him any soft turnips)”. He cracked up at your response. Can’t wait for Follow me up to Carlow.
Hi! Feeling well I hope. Sorry you aren’t getting around well. Heartbreaking. Fin said he might take me up on the hay AND the turnips! 😂 Happy to hear it.
If you can’t come to me, I guess I’ll have to come to you. Just a wheelchair and cold/snow doesn’t mix well. Keep missing Finbar for that reason. It’s brutally cold in Boston this month. Have to wait for the spring to get across the Atlantic. Thank you for the reply.
Saw you and Shane tonight singing Spancil Hill in 1994. And Glen Hansard last month at the Dublin Christmas Busk again, so good. Anniversary weekends can be brutal. Wish his family healing. Thought Glen really made it a celebration.
Also accidentally saw you sing with Shane Lowry, “Little Honda 50” (in your bare feet! Love it) You might like friend Eddie Kane’s version (a young wolfe tone). He’s so talented. Just starting and great. Derek knows how to pick ‘em.
Irish Contribution to America is coming along nicely. Just need to dig more for one more headliner musician who knows the history involved. I am truly sorry you aren’t feeling your best, I get that.
So here it is another pilgrimage to Dublin to see Christy miss the nights in the Barras but will take every experience with Christy as a joyous occasion. Can’t wait Viva La Quinta, Lisdoon brings back great memories of all the places we have worshiped at your altar.
See you Monday Christy nothing compares…
Paul & Cathy
Thanks John…
Just watched Lisa on with Tommy Tiernan where she sang this song…. powerful stuff indeed
Christy's reply
great interview….great song…..her studies responses….no auld shite….simple straight forward honesty with humour and compassion……and fire in her belly….
“just turn to the left at the Bridge of Finea”
Found this new song from Lisa O’ Neill this morning. Powerful singer and a song of many of the difficulties faced in tge modern age. I thought some on here might appreciate it. Great to read of the Vicar Street gigs – flying as always. Best wishes to you and all of the crew. https://youtu.be/z9ZTHXsz3RU?si=jK1pLIcQhs6AE7r_
Christy's reply
among the many female singers that have emerged in Ireland these past decades, Lisa O’Neill stands out….
Christy hi
We are back to earth with a bump after a great weekend in Dublin.
Something to lift me up arrived in the shape of Joshua Burnside’s new song. It is groovy.
RIP Denis……even with George and Bobby alongside him…he always caught the eye…sparkled and entertained…. a “bit of divilment”, a “bit of a messer”, despite the legends around him he was my favourite ….marks the end of that lingering era
Hi Christy –
This is a blast from the late 70s. This is Roger Burridge’s wife Kate (Tommy McGann’s blonde girlfriend Kathy). I have been replaying all you music, as Paddy Doherty & Ger Ryan are getting photos & stories of the festival days in Doolin from me. I believe you are involved as well? I just wanted to say hi and also let you know that Roger passed in 2020, in case you hadn’t heard. From your over-half-a-decade fan, Kathy Lutkevich Burridge
Christy's reply
Was sorry to hear of Roger’s passing RIP…..Tommy too RIP…..what a time it was….nothing comes near those festive times in Doolin and environs….I think back further to Fisher St in 1965 ….that smokey sleepy time….
Hi Christy I met you and your wonderful Wife, and we enjoyed a great chat over the olden days and yes you are right you do support the survivors of Industrial schools. You enjoyed my very first attempt writing a song about the notorious hell holes as Artane, a song you listened to titled, industrial schools were not schools I was so truly honoured, I sent Paddy three songs songs lyrics and chords as you requested. But as Pady
dy rightly said you get a lot of requests and things sent, I only hope you can give them a chance, PS thank you so much for your kindness for that ticket, and great respect you showed me, during the Masters of Tradition, you are a great person Christy, regards Robert
Christy's reply
Hi Robert..I rem our meet in Bantry last year…the beautiful drawings you shared and the chat we had….I’m working on new songs at the moment here….I have many songs that have been sent and will be looking through them in due course…for the time being I’m focusing on writing..anytime I find a song I can sing I make contact with the writer…thats the best I can do…
Hi
Just wish to say how much I am now enjoying the guestbook it seems to have developed or I have changed,
I’ve no music talent, though I’ve tried, but I love reading about others progress and your encouragement.
Details of memories concerts, books, films are a bonus
My memories of folk music in Liverpool and London especially would fill a book.
That’s all.
Thanks all
See you at Vicar Street on Monday!
I want to post the videos I caught of Christy and Andy together, today.

Thank you to Smal for what you said about my singing and playing!
Great that Patsy referenced ‘January Man’ …I was reeled in the first time I ever heard it,which was your recording.it featured on many of our gigs and is a gem to play…one of the great life cycle, reflective songs…with an honourable mention to Joni’s ‘Circle Game’…
You and audients at your gigs have often mentioned the pleasure of seeing a mixed age group in attendance. Interesting that the director of ‘A complete unknown’ hopes that many of Chalomet’s young fans will follow his interest in Dylan/folk music…Also, impressive that the film was started in 2019. Put on hold by COVID and studio problems. Far from stagnating, the film gained…lead actors learned to play and sing,so improved their performances. Fair play…
Hi Christy, wonderful gig on Sunday night. Great to hear a fine mix of the old and the new. It seems you get better every time we see you. Thanks for the dedication and for Beeswing, Kiera and I were made up. Such a great crowd and we made a few new friends. We’re back in Wales now, but hopefully we will be back to see you again next year.
Hi Christy,
So, looking forward to the final night of your run in HQ…and what an experience it has been. A brilliant venue, with every night different to the last, 72 different songs so far, incredible !!!! Wonderful and timely audience participation most of the time, and your good self, conducting and bringing us to different places, and different visions. “ Boy in the wild” has become one of my standout songs, each time you sing it I visualize a vulnerable person reaching out and getting comfort. Wally really hit the spot with this one.
One of my other “Special” songs is “January Man”, I absolutely love it’s the description of the year. For many years now Ronan Collins used to play my request for it each New Years Day on Radio1. Alas he has moved on now; but I’m hoping it might find its way on to the list next Monday, before the Month ends.
Anyway, Christy thanks to you, for all the entertainment you gave us on this run and throughout the years, we are indeed privileged.
Ride on.
Patsy
Info for Dylan fans, people with access to BBC radio 2 folk show…currently on air,Dylan special/interviews with Chalomet and Mangold from ‘A complete unknown’…
I’ve been absorbed by Dylan for most of my life and still finding it boggling that so many brilliant songs were written when he was barely out of his teens.
Happy New Year all, Im glad to see everyone here survived the festive season in one piece.
Thanks Rory for that video. Viewing footage from Gaza there are some visceral moments that really illustrate the emotional impact this is having on children. I vividly remember one clip in which a child was being laid on a hospital floor screaming “not the tiles, not the tiles mama!”, and I realised she had been seeing all of the same videos the rest of the world was watching, and she knew what might await her. The reflective storytelling of the kids in your video is perhaps even more devastating.
Rebeccah, Im delighted to discover your youtube channel, and your harp! What wonderful performances.
Christy, I wonder if i might trouble you for some guidance? I have something musical/political I’d like to share with you but I cant post the link publicly. If you’re willing to indulge me, could you drop me a line at smal@mailfence.com
