Just home from a most wonderful night of laughter and singing with 3 generations…the first concert for 2 of our children and my parents who have been going to your gigs for over 50 years. Simply magical! Our youngest had a hitlist of her top 5 and you played them all. Thanks so much for years of music and here’s to many more!

I was afraid to ask the tablet about Poor Old Earth for fear I would learn of theft like you experienced with the DVD. Not by Dolly, or the good people at Claddah, but record companies, like the ones who cheated blues artists, Elvis, and many others I’m sure. I was relieved to learn Alan Lomax took measures to prevent just that when cataloguing folk and traditional music, sending Jean Ritchie et al to Ireland, and points across the Irish Sea, for recording sessions. No doubt you know Peggy Seeger picked that song up from Peggy, in NY. I didn’t find anything on the Lomax archive site about where the song came from when Ritchie picked it up.

it was a winter’s night in Kilkenny circa 2002..the studio was in a shed in the haggart of a farmyard…it was freezing solid…myself Donal Lunny and Declan Sinnott wrapping up for the day…I asked them to play that melody and I set off with Sam Beckett for a walk in the dark…that’s what came out of it… a cat’s flux…I heard later that Sam approved…I’ll run it past Peggy in a few months ..going to hear her final Irish gig in the Summer..when she plays a tour with her two sons Neil and Calum…I recorded a song with them both once.. spot prize for first up with that song…I suspect Alan Lomax heard my great aunt nanny sing that song between the 1846 genocide and the great war

Hello Christy,
I’d no idea the 2006 dvd had things going on behind it. For me it’s a completely lovely thing to watch. The setlist is unusual, Wise and Holy Woman, Wandering Aengus. Some jewels of songs in there.
I often watch the Planxty 2004 gig. Barrowlands is fantastic with it’s volatile, scary crowd.
Hope it’s a joyful surf tonight and all lucky enough to be there have a great time.

Christy,
Hope you are well my friend. I’m flying this morning from Stuttgart to Dublin, then driving to Mullingar for the concert tonight, 19 Feb. Flew over from the U.S. to see you live. Any chance of hearing McIlhatton or Scapegoats at tonight’s show? Know it’ll be a good evening—see you then.

Hi Christy, I took a trip out yesterday to Walton Cemetery (North Liverpool) to visit the grave of Dublin born Robert Croker/Noonan/Tressell. Sadly he is buried along with twelve others in a paupers grave as the Raggerd Trousered Philantropists wasn’t published until 1914, three years after his death. A nippy day, but worth the trip and an interesting bit of social history. John
