Christy hello first I would like to say it was a huge honor to sit on the stage behind you in Derry on the 18th April 2013 listening to you sing “How Long” I was part of the Encore Contemporary Chior. It was an amazing and emotional day for the city and from start to finish it was fantastic a feeling I hope everyone someday get’s the chance to experience x You were AMAZING. The main reason for my post to you today is I have just popped on here to ask you for a small favour it is for my sister inlaw Margaret Campbell who is a huge fan of yourself, it is her 50th Birthday this month and I would dearly love for to be able to give her a birthday greeting from yourself I do hope you don’t mind me asking x Margaret is originally from Kilkee County Clare and now lives in Derry so it really is a long long way from Clare to here … I do hope you can help God Bless. Lana
Just arrived home in Australia from our first trip to the UK. I have listened to your music for nearly 20 years now but had never seen you live before until Rhyl last week.
We had planned the trip 6 months ago but changed the itinerary a bit when I saw that you were performing in Rhyl. I couldn’t miss the chance especially when you have said that you are unlikely to travel to Australia again.
It was really a thrill to see you live and the set list was spot on. A great selection of old and knew songs. It made braving the wind in Rhyl well worth it.
Thanks for the great music and hope to see you again, if not in Australia then hopefully when we tour Ireland in a couple of years.
Christy's reply
thanks for feedback…it was a windy one for sure..glad you felt your trip to Rhyl was worthwhile..greetings to all songbirds up there in Australia
Hi Christy and Belgian friends of Ghent
We had the same reaction after that unforgettable gig in Dranouter back in ’94. We do remember as yesterday the songs you sang that evening for your grand uncle Joe, whos name is on the wall in Ieper. There is a live extract (Brown eyes, unfortunately only one song) on the 40yrs 6 CD-collection box. Since that day we keep coming back to Ireland and try to attend a gig each time, next will be Knocknagoshel in July; Looking forward to it.
Piet & Els
hi christy
you are right he is coming to your show on the sixth of July sorry for my spelling mistakes hope everything is still on for him to say hi. he is over the moon. hope everything plans out.
kind regards
Patrick
Hello Christy, hope you’re enjoying a rest after your recent gigs. We thought of you on Saturday evening as we sang Spancil Hill around the camp fire on our first trip to the fields this year. The craic was mighty! Tallulah was playing guitar on it this time, as well as singing. Peace and love from us all.
Christy's reply
Tallulah and Spancilhill..what a picture….hope ye all have a splendid Summer…that we get back to Brighton again some day
Just back from two weeks in Wales (North and South) and Ireland (and a bit of England), some great gigs (for me Bath was the best one), it was good to visit family and see friends.
Went to Ireland for the last few days, met up with the Lar fella.
Had a great time.
If music be the food of love, play on.
Christy's reply
it was a grand trip Brian, I spotted you a few times, most memorably over the door in Hay during the sound check!…I really appreciate the efforts you loyal followers make to hear the songs…I feel you may be warming to The Honda 50….I heard you sing harmonies on the chorus
We saw you in Dranouter decades agoo. A gig with an enormous intensity. Often we thought that walking Ireland and a gig, would be the max. We leave today, looking forward to your gig in Wexford. Thank you for all these unforgetable music.
Martine, Philippe, Lotte
Christy's reply
I do recall that gig in Dranouter..it was a special night, maybe 20 years ago..I still have a recording of that gig…safe journey to Wexford, its a lovely town to visit
Dad took me to your concert at the Auckland Town Hall in 1998 (I think). Hands down most enjoyable concert I’ve been lucky enough to go to, possibly on a par with The Boss (but for the purposes of this post, you’re miles ahead of him).
More importantly… Any chance of getting down to Australia for a tour? I could get Dad across the Tasman and take him this time around.
Cheers
Johnny
Christy's reply
I think a few years earlier since I played Auckland…I have no plans to play long haul gigs but I cant say never!
Well Christy, see you have June 30th off …KILDARE v DUBLIN, “and its straight we will repair” to the Final, I hope, good on yeah Johnny Doyle.
Christy's reply
walked a sector of The Curragh Plains yesterday as past of the June Fest in Newbridge. A truly memorable experience revisiting many hills and hollows of youth ,this time learning so much about where I roamed as a boy. We finished with tea and sambos in Lumville. Then we went to Milltown to visit the folks and on into “the riverside” for the tea. Kildare’s success was a prominent topic. Now we must turn our gaze towards those powerful “Jacks in Blue” and figure out how, in the name of god, are we gonna give ’em a good rattle . Greetings to all yours John…shine on
Hi Christy.
I saw that you’re doing a gig in support of Philip Chevron and 2 vivid memories came to mind. First memory is that I was at that gig in O’Connell Schools in 1972. I was 12 years old sitting in the back of about 90 rows of overactive schoolboys – you might not have noticed me. Am I wrong in thinking that Phil Chevron and his sister (in a duo called ‘Foxglove’) played support for Planxty?? I remember you warning a noisy bloke in the front row that “if that chap in the white geansai doesn’t stop messing I’ll be down to him.”
The second memory is of that gig in the Stadium in 1982 – Chevron performed the support act in a sort of Berlin-decadent Brecht/Weill mode but had been booed a lot by the front rows (maybe the white geansai character again). I think he cut his gig short and you looked well ticked off when you appeared. I remember you said something like “this song was written by the man you lot just booed off this stage” as Moving Hearts cracked straight into ‘Faithful Departed.’
I wish I could remember yesterday half as well…..
Christy's reply
Rory….thanks for your post, I’ll have to share that with Chev….my main memory of the O’Connell’s gig is being very impressed with the young guy running the show….that he booked the hall, contacted our manager ( and convinced him) did the publicity, printed and sold the tickets, welcomed us and then ran the gig….these days it would take a legion highly qualified, self important, arts administrators to even hatch a plan….I knew then that we were dealing with a very special kid (as history has confirmed)….your mention of the second gig brings back the embarrassment and anger I felt that night in The Stadium…Chevron handled it better then I did…we both felt humiliated by the treatment meted out to Agnes Bernelle by a handfull of louts and morons….they were there again at The Pod 6 years ago when I did a couple of nights with Damien Dempsey and Jinx Lennon.
We remember those times more clearly because every day was different back then.We spent a lot more time doing then reflecting. Lets get up and go Rory. ( I’m typing this in bed !!)
Hi All. its hard to believe that this day last week we were half way through the Welsh and Bath tour,,, what fun that was,, great company,,, grand gigs in beautiful rooms,,, wonderful sounds and lots of old favourite songs appearing,,,, now its the June bank holiday weekend which means Listowel Writers Week and the GAA Championship heating up…….. and Wexford mext week..Shine On,,,, Oh,,,and Knockngoshel is SOLD OUT !!! and still 42 sleeps away !! enjoyed the Tadg Kenneally homecoming programme on TG4 from Listowel….remember going to Kerry game there in the early 80s and going back to the family pub with Tom McCarthy from Annascaul…I met many Kerry legends the same day……glad you had a good trip over….
I represent a very small group of people in London who gather in my living room for monthly music sharing and focused listening. It’s purely for our own entertainment – nothing commercial about it whatsoever.
So many reasons to mention and not enough time here…! 🙂
Each month, we’re going to see if we can get one track recommendation from someone industry related. We’d all be so HONOURED if you could give us a quick track suggestion! All we need is a single track name – and if feeling inspired, a reason why it was chosen in a few sentences.
All eras, genres, artists welcome. We have a good mix of soul and disco lovers along with a hardcore goth contingent so go as wild as you like…!
So far, we’ve had suggestions from Diamanda Galas, Greg Wilson, Señor Coconut, Mungolian Jetset, Gideon Berger (Block 9), Kaidi Tatham (Bugz in the Attic), Tim Lawrence (author), Carleen Anderson (Young Disciples), Was (not was), Holly Johnson, Michael Gira (Swans), Ost & Kjex, Jon of the Pleased Wimmin, Angela McCluskey, William Bennett (Whitehouse), David McSherry (Fila Brazillia), Jason Swinscoe (The Cinematic Orchestra) and Terry Farley (Boy’s Own/Faith).
Thank you so much for a wonderful evening in Newport. My wife and I, she’s Irish and has seen you play a few times before, were astounded by the virtuosity of yourself and Declan and the energy you both have performing. I wonder what the secret is. Every song was a delight to listen to, especially Ordinary Man which should be the anthem for these troubled economic times and required listening for politicians.
All our best wishes – Richard and Mary

back home here in Dark Lagoon I am lying in for the morning…it always takes a day or two to get back to whatever might feel normal…The “secret” you ask ! What a great question, for it is a bit of a mystery. Few recognise nor acknowledge what to most is just two auld fellas bangin on guitars and singin their heads off. Declan and I have been full time musicians since the 60s.We first played together in 1981 in a band called Moving Hearts. We have played together on and off since then but for the last 13 years this “band”has been more or less constant ( tho we both engage in various side projects ) The energy comes from the pleasure we take in making the noise we make. We also seek new work all the time and we like to tweak the older numbers. I’m forever fidgeting with words, we change keys, he is always creating new colours….we never plan our sets…Declan never knows whats coming next…as I get towards the end of a song my mind begins to think of the next one….both of us have been in outfits where the set remained IDENTICAL every night, right down to the patter between numbers…this can lead to intense boredom…
we only meet up on the road or in the studio now.. when the next brace of gigs come about we are both ready for action…happy to meet up again with the road crew, to rehearse, sound check, warm up and get ready to play for the songsters who are gathering expectantly out in the venue…that enthusiasm and expectation creates the buzz that feeds our performance…greetings to you both Richard and Mary and all CWMBRAN songbirds
Wonderful gig in Newport, thank you so much. Absolutely loved the versions of Beeswing and Ride On – but everything was incredible. I hope you had a safe journey home.

Bath on Sunday evening… your music, stories and presence was food for the soul. I am still enjoying it now, replaying it in my memory. Two of my three all time favourites were performed (Black is the Colour and Little Musgrave). It was all outstanding – total joy. Thank you Declan, thank you Christy.
