C, the Arthurs Day and your Prime Time appearance last night (Tues). Ok, one can say what one likes about an international company trying to establish its brand name and so on. But what about all the other indoor and outdoor drinking orgies that go on right throughout the country all year around? Have you ever walked around our large cities nad towns around 9 or 10pm on St Patricks Day? What about stepping out around our big cites at post 2am and the clubs closing? Is there anyone talking about banning St Patricks Day or shutting down night clubs? I looked at a video of the your Electric Picnic concert and by all accounts, you and Dec must have known it wasnt a Pioneer rally yez were coming out to play at; the whole crowd were in full voice before ye even began. They were singing the Irish World Cup tune if I recall right. What about other such events, often well sponsored by drinks companies? Rose of Tralee? The ‘Guinness’ Jazz Festival? Should they be banned and outlawed? I heard inside the last few days of a niteclub near a third-level college selling drinks for €1, yes one Euro. And is the world going to end because of this happening?
Then this ditty you sang, I heard petty spiteful references to other musicians and bands playing for Arthurs Day. It was petty and mean-spirited of you to get involved in that. It’s their right to turn up and play and maybe acquire much needed revenue on the day.
It’s only one day, one day in many of such organised events involving drink, stay at home and grin and bear it. You sank enough of the black stuff yourself in your days not to emerge sanctimonious like the reformed sinner – plus demeaning yourself in the process. Personally I’m awful surprised at RTE and Prime Time…..
Get off the stage on this one – you no place there – get out and exit stage left while the going is good.
Christy's reply
good man Ed., get it off your chest… we see what we want to see,we hear what we want to hear….my wee ditty is but a very small part of the current healthy debate….I have no problem with people drinking…I do have a problem with the tactics employed by the Drinks Industry to increase their enormous profits…enjoy yourself on Arthur’s Day Ed..I hope to have a good day myself
Hello Christy, there’s a big celebration this week in Wales for the 70th birthday of Max Boyce. Just wondering if you’ve heard or sung any of his songs? I’m sure all your welsh fans would love to hear your interpretation of Max’s superb “Rhondda Grey”
Christy's reply
Thanks Phil, I’ll have a listen..I’ve not heard this
Superb Prime Time performance. You looked like you were enjoying it and could have carried on for the night. Good answers to the questions thrown your way.
Christy's reply
never thought I’d be asked to sing on Prime Time..it was quite an experience
Hi All.. Christy was at his best tonight,,, doing what he is passioinate about,,,, telling a story through song while holding a mirror to society……. following in the footsteps of other giants like Woody Guthrie,,, here is the link to the Prime Time programme,,, the piece starts at about 17 mins in.. http://www.rte.ie/player/ie/show/10201713/ Beir bua agus beannacht. Christy .
Brilliant performance on Prime Time ….. Even better replies to the questions you were asked. Well done.
‘Arthur’s Day should never been allowed in the first place.
Christy's reply
I agree with Declan Lynch and yourself on this one
Christy, Interesting 10 minute text on liveline today asking people were they for or against Arthur’s Day. Seven thousand texted and the result was 76% against 24% for…
As I’m here, did you ever consider covering the Wally Page wonderful song Marching Season.. RyanL
Christy's reply
I had a cut at Marching Season a few years back but could not get the hang of it..another Wally Page classic
Dear Christy, I was wondering whether you or your management could get back to me at all re: a charity I am hoping to set up in memory of my late brother, he was a big fan of yours and he left his earthly life at the age of 24 whilst listening to ‘The voyage’, it is a charity which I fell you would be interested in, but I don’t want to give details on here. My number is 0873882087, it would also mean a lot to fill you in on how much your concerts meant to him. Sarah, my email was on part of my registration.
I like your song ‘Arthurs Day’ as it highlights the contradictions of our society. Well done for prompting debate on the issues. Becoming self aware of a unit of alcohol is problematic in the context of the sale of drink today. Good stuff John.
Morning all.
2 dumb questions first. Why is this website called the 4711ers. For all of you out there thinking what a thick git, I really don’t know. Secondly, is there a way of changing your password from the one issued with the registration. It’s a series of letters and numbers I can never remember and have to refer to ‘notes’on the iphone.
Lovely to read all the stories on the page. I gather there’s a bit of furore over there about the exploitation of’ Arthurs Day. We’ve had the talk over here about the use of Drunk Tanks. What a load of *ollocks. What planet are these politicians living on. Most provincial town centres in the UK are no-go areas for decent folk in the evening. The city centres are kept nice and tidy though so the lawyers and bankers don’t get caught up in the riff-faff with their afternoon cocktails. If politicians and the police enforced the law in relation to under age drinking and not selling to someone already half cut then there wouldn’t be the mess we have here. That said, I’ll be catching a tram and train with daughter Georgia from Oldham to Liverpool on the 12th so we can have a little tipple. Christy, I have to be at Lime Street stn by 11.16pm. Will I make it. The sun is shining on the Moors over Saddleworth this morning and all is grand. Take care of yourselves.
Frankie
P.S. Did I mention it was Georgia’s 28th Birthday on the 12th also. ‘Yes you did you fecker’ I hear you say’
Christy's reply
my Grandmother Ellie Power always liked a wee spray of 4711 eau de cologne before going out on the razz….re password, thats not my department ..first time I’ve heard of it being a problem…dont know what time we’ll finish in The Phil…have been known to do a long encore there.missed the last train out of Lime St myself a few times….
What a great way to start the weekend on a Monday with Luka in Kilkee and looking forward to Friday in Limerick …..who knows “Biko”might make an appearance ……Loving all this Arthurs Day Controversy at the moment …..You might play a little request for My Svetlana …..I am bringing her on her first trip to America on Sunday so its a real special weekend for her.
God Bless
Jimi.
Christy's reply
Hope ye have an exciting time across the ocean..see you by The Shannon
Absolutely buzzing to see the new album coming out. Hope Arthur’s day gets another run out in Liverpool. Really looking forward to this year again. Pity you didnt come over to Liverpool for the Irish festival every year as i am sure you would fill the Philharmonic every time. Still need the one album to complete my collection. Have everyone you issued solo except The Spirit of Freedom which i am still looking for. Keep well sir and looking forward to Saturday fortnight.
Christy's reply
is there no one out there that could rattle off a copy of “The Spirit” for Spur…the poor lad is close to having the full set
Deeeeep down, that’s where I come from … Christy, your Bogman is an earworm – can’t get it out of me head today … Was wondering – will it be part of your new boxset, together with Arthur’s Day? Or will the new album consist exclusively of earlier self-penned songs ? You don’t need to reveal it if you prefer to keep us in suspense until the release date .. So excited!! Lots of love from Hamburg.
Christy's reply
just putting the final touches to the icing on the cake…wont be long now
Hi Christy. I wanted to share with you the festival that was had here in China last week. It’s called the ‘Mid-Autumn Festival’ and fell on a Thursday this year. It’s a family festival that dates back to around the 9th century and celebrates gathering together, thanksgiving, praying and worshipping the moon. During the day people eat special cakes called ‘mooncakes’ and light lanterns and then later you gather together with your loved ones and share the late evening together under our one moon. What do you think Christy? Me thinks it’s a nice festival worth having of a Thursday in September..
Christy's reply
that sounds good to me John…I’d like a Festival that would slow time down..its mid-Autumn and we still have Christmas Pudding in The Fridge…its all going too fast ..go easy on the Mooncakes..God only knows what might be in them
Hi All. The Athurs Day debate rolls on,, more performers are questioning the ethics of the event,,, the Sunday Business Post and the Sunday Times both have good articles today…. the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland ( http://www.rcpi.ie ) are holding a public meeting tomorrow Mon 23d at 6pm on the theme “ Join the National Conversation on Alcohol – Who’s calling the shots? “ with a live webcast,,,, the movement is certainly gaining momentum, we can all be part of it,,change is possible. Hello christy
you might not remember me, my name is rory sheerin, you’d know my mother and father ,ann & kevin from when you lived in coolcullen, I heard you’re looking for the words of the ridge and coolcullen brigade from someone that was at your concert in carlow, I have the words framed here hanging on the wall here in the pub and I would be delighted to give them to you, ….Rory
Christy's reply
Lovely to hear from you Rory…I had some great nights in “Sheerins of The Ridge” played a gig or two there in the late 70s..give my best to Kevin and Anne, I rem your Grandparents too. I’d love to have that song again..I will make contact with you
Great night in Carlow, had three fans who were seeing you for the first time, they floated home.Loved the Bogman, its like a different song and Arthurs day, well needed to be said,Paul always liked you singing the Curragh,he could blast it out himself……….. Would love to see Mayo win today, they are a bit like ourselves…Christy thanks for a great night.
Christy's reply
Glad it went well for you John, Myself and Decky had a good Carlow Time
I see that the Church of Ireland has just elected Pat Storey as its first female bishop. Not sure how well you know him, but her husband, Rev Earl Storey, is a big fan of yours and has spoken of how one of his greatest nights was hearing you singing the Two Coneelys on the Aran Islands. Changing times for Godwoman perhaps.
Hi Christy. I’m presenting a new chat show on TG4 every Monday evening at 8pm, but it’s pre-recorded during the day it goes out.
This Monday we are talking about Irish people and alcohol, particularly women, and we would LOVE if you would come on Skype for a minute or two as coincidentally your ‘anti-Arthur’ song is out….PLEASE!
We would be so grateful, and promise not to keep you long!
Kindest regards, Roisin 087 6955052
