great to hear that Wisconsin shriek…greetings to all ye long haul balladeers
Hello Christy,
I have long been a fan of yours, but I am contacting you now to ask permission to use one of your songs in one, or possibly two, TV programs.
I am the nephew of Timothy John Evans. A good few years ago you recorded a version of a Ewan McColl song about my uncle. I consider it to be the best version of the song that I have ever heard. Two TV companies are looking to make yet more programmes about Tim’s case over the next two years to coincide with various anniversaries relating to the death penalty, its abolition, and making a case for its continuing abolition. My mother, Tim’s half-sister is being asked to contribute to at least one of these programmes.
If we have any input at all into the way Tim’s case is presented in this program I would love to have your version of Tim’s ballad playing as a background track.
Can you, or one of your representatives, please contact me asap to let me know whether or not you would be willing to let us use your version of Ewan’s song? And would we also need to seek Ewan McColl’s approval?
This is not a wind-up, and I’d be most grateful for a reply. If necessary I can provide you with contact details for the family’s solicitor.
Yours sincerely, Dave Westlake
Dear mister Moore, I’m a 24-year old student of the Amsterdam University, studying the MA European Studies. The next six months I will be writing my graduation thesis about the folk music revival on the British Isles in the twentieth century. My main focus will be on the folk music in Ireland and England. Of course I can use a lot of secondary literature to do my research, but it would be great if I could ask some questions about the Irish folk revival to some of the key figures. Therefore I would like to ask you, as one of the founders of Planxty and Moving Hearts and as an important figure in the Irish folk movement, if you are able to answer some questions about my research topic somewhere in the next few months. That would be an absolutely great addition to my final thesis. Kind regards from The Netherlands
My mom came over from Cork and met Mick Hipkiss in Birmingham in the early days ,he sang when my mother was seriously ill in hospital a beautiful ballad version of ‘Banks of my own lovely Lee’
I remember you at the Birmingham Odeon possibly on the ‘Ride On’ tour asking if he was in the audience.
I believe you used to sing in the same clubs.
Funny how all Irish people seem to know each other in some fashion.
Keep up the good work Christy.
Christy's reply
“what part are you from” resounds in the four corners whenever we meet…we’ll always find mutual interest or acquaintance to get the conversation rolling…then the next question can be.”what are you having” or ” fancy a cuppa scald” and sometimes perhaps ” your place or mine”
I hope you will tour the West Coast of the US some time. I’ve been listening to you for 27 years, and would love to see you live some time. But if not, I still might catch you in Ireland some year.
Christy's reply
we’ll meet along the way whenever its meant to be..thanks for listening..last time in LA I played Culver City…half expected to meet Buck Jones but twas a no- show from Buck..Colm Gallagher more then made up for it and gifted me a most wonderful song….
Christy, recently friends of mine were at your great concert at the Bord Gais Theatre and told me about you mentioning your time in O’Connors singing with my late uncle Christy O’Connor during the Galway Races in the 60’s,you sang Roisin The bow and The Jug Of Punch,I am honoured to hear you talk about these memories ,thanks again Frank O’Connor,O’Connors pub Salthill Galway.
Christy's reply
a pleasure to remember those heady days Frank…myself and the late John Flood went Galway Races about 50 years ago. I had a guitar and John had a mini-van. We had a ramshackle tent and a couple of blankets. We headed into O’Connors the first night and, unbeknownst to me, John told your Uncle Christy that I was a bit of a singer. He called me up and I nervously sang Rosin The Bow. The following night I brought the guitar in and did The Jug of Punch. That night I got my first taste of Rum & Black. We never made it to the races. 25 years later I started to play in CJ’s with Benny and Nelis. Another association with your family…( not to forget playing with Corinthians !!)
The connection between my grandmother and Pete Seeger was a local priest, a Fr. Mooney who travelled a lot between Ireland and America and visited my grandmother regularly on his trips home. Dad remembers a connection with the Clancys also and Fr. Mooney was involved with promoting the Clancys in America as far as he knows. My father remembers he always brought her records and there are still many of them there at the home house (including one of the Clancys with Pete Seeger). In 1962 he arrived with Pete Seeger. He said they went into Abbeyleix also and met Tom Clancy and Peggy Seeger in Morrissey’s pub.
Hilary was asking me yesterday if my grandmother sang. I’m sure she did. She was the local primary teacher in Spink all her life. Unfortunately she died when I was very young so I barely remember her. I just found out her husband, also John Brophy, was a tenor and sang with John McCormack in America. There would not have been a link there with Pete Seeger though as this would have been the 1930’s, before he met my grandmother. He died when Dad was only a few years old and unfortunately I do not know much more about him.
Christy's reply
Greetings to Spink. You are displaying some fine singing pedigree there John. What a memory to share. Sucha gathering in Morrisseys of Abbeyleix. If I’d known I’d have been upon me bike and there by closing time. Back then I was just learning my first chords from Donal Lunny 30 miles up the road in Newbridge. I often cycled to Maryborough to see Kildare beat Laois but it seldom happened. We had John McCormack records at home and Pete came later. Hope you’re having a good day.
Hi All…. CM made reference there earlier to a song that Pete Seeger and Terry Sullivan sang together,,, as Gaelige. The story personifies the global connections in song,, a few years back a request came through for the words and mabe the phonetic pronunciation of Oro Se de Bheatha Bhaile. It involved texts and emails around the globe amongst 4711ers,,, and within a few short hours the result was sent to Terry,,, There is a follow on to that story because the clip was only available on Terrys facebook page,,,, until last week when I was in touch with CS ( 9) from remote Connemara who uploaded the clip to Youtube,,,, and to finish mo sceal here is that clip…http://youtu.be/jZ7nJ-Y9WcU … I do hope John B from Spink will have more news on the connection with Pete.. I understand it involves his Grandad who sang with John Mc Cormack in the USA,,, Beir bua. H

Cheers Eddie, I wish you well with your initiative….
I-player link to Morecambe Bay report here now. Only available 7 days (and maybe only in UK). Maybe some of our more technical guys can post it another way. Sad case.
Yet another wonderful chat Christy – and so poignant with Pete Seeger, Luke and Anne Lovett. Seems to be a time of anniversaries – sad to look back on but we must never forget. Bloody Sunday too and the Stardust just a couple of weeks away. People and events that changed us all. Totally shocked today to hear that Wednesday is the 10th anniversary of the tragic events on Morecambe Bay.Can’t believe it’s that long ago – and almost been repeated a few times since. A bit about it on BBC North West tonight – will be on i-player soon but maybe only in UK. Wee bit of it here – enough to get a taste of the terror of the night. Maybe not for the easily upset. Let us remember….. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-25403899

Hi there, this is not really for Christy, its a kind of request for any readers out there.
Christy is playing Clonmel on Mar 1st for which I got my tickets ages ago. Problem is, I’ve got two relations who are massive CHRISTY fans coming over from London that week, and they would dearly love to see and hear Christy again.Problem is of course that all the tickets are sold.
Is there anyone out there that might have bought two tickets and now find that they cannot go. If so, then you can contact me at bocsti@hotmail.com. Fingers crossed John O Neill

Greetings Christy,
Being a Man of Music, I offer up Michael Cooney. You may know, you may not. He is a great traditional music man. He had an accident – car, motorcycle I don’t recall. But, he is a great man. here he is. Peace Y’all!
