I was in the national bank training school with your father and have good memories of our time in Rathmines in 1963…3 years later I was transferred to Ballyhaunis Co. Mayo…your grandfather was manager of that branch…he was a stickler for correctness, it was there I decided that I had to flee…so I can honestly say that your grandfather helped me to achieve my life’s ambition to be a full time singer, to hit the road with my banjo on my knee….so belated Thanks to Austin Comerton,National Bank, Ballyhaunis (1965)

My father’s from Maddenstown and my mother from Clare and I’m from London so there are strong connections. They’re both now living in Clonmel. Best wishes and thanks for doing what you do.

my old best friend, Billy Parkinson, hailed from Maddenstown..his grandfather was the leading trainer of the day and his stables were there..his father was a leading jockey…Billy and myself nursed manys the bottle of stout when funds were low but made up for it when we were flush…Billy passed some years back, he was a great footballer in his youth, played for Sarsfields in his hay day and I still remember seeing him play Minor for Kildare in Croke Park over 50 years ago….Billy, Mickser Reid and myself spent manys the hour singing on the Liffey Banks after sharing a few foaming flagons of Bulmers best

2. Butterfly for the shouty lady at the back

A great gig last night and I am going again tonight (Thursday). I managed to get one of those funny boxes at the side of the Festival Hall and will have the tricolour draped over the front for Joxer.
Some South African friends are coming – Jason Pillay, his brother Nad and Joyce. We all campaigned together in anti-apartheid days of the 1980s.
It would be great if you could sing Dunnes Stores or maybe Biko Drum — or as the man shouted out today “anything you want to sing”. Best wishes to you and Declan

I remember asking you before about the background to the song – Different Love Song from the blue album off your box set – be a nice song to hear live 😉
Incidentally I see Andy Irvine is playing two nights in the Phil towards the end of April – must try get to see him too.

I sent my a close pal o’ mine in Argentina your song “Los Desaparecidos” and we both agree it is a gorgeous and powerful song. He himself was “un desaparecido” who survived the Dirty War (La Guerra Sucia). There’s a documentary being completed on his best friend who did not survive. More to come.

Last time you came to Newcastle you played Song for A Wandering Aonghus for me. I told you of my longing for the lush green fields of Ireland as I am currently based in the North of England, and how listening to your songs take me home. My situation remains the same, as does my request for that particular song for this Sundays performance. I would be very grateful if you would consider performing this again.

In November 2010 when you were last at the Festival Hall you played ” Train stopping on Merseyside ” for my 11th Birthday .I asked for The Disappeared which i still love .My mum , dad and auntie Sally were all there . It was a fantastic birthday .
Since then i saw you two nights running in Edinburgh . We had a brilliant half term week in Edinburgh on our way to Ayr for horseracing . You played ” Ride On” for me , gave me your notes and plectrum and i had my photograph taken with you and Declan as you
leaving .Everything is in my memory box !
My dad and me have front row seats tomorrow numbers 36 and 37 ! I cant wait ! Dad is going both nights . My dad’s name is Michael Hayes . Could you play Farmer Michael Hayes for him tomorrow or Honda 50 which i keep singing .

To Alan in Cardiff on the Welsh International Brigade. There were about 300 Welsh volunteers, about a third of them miners. There is a plaque in their memory at Blaenavon, might be a good place to start your research.
Hi Christie, I grew up listening to your music and was due to attend your gig in Leeds on Sunday for a family reunion but I couldn’t make the trip north, I hear that you played a stomping set full of loads of good old tunes including some of my fave’s: Ride On, Smoke and Strong Whisky, Lisdoonvarna etc so I’m coming instead to Wednesday’s gig at the royal festival hall.
