Christy, thank you for a fantastic gig at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall last night, top notch as usual.
Any indication to when you’ll be in Glasgow next? I want the Christy/Barrowlands experience, I’ve done the GRCH & Liverpool Philharmonic, Barrowlands is just the business as a gig venue – you were right, it would be a travesty if that place ever closed.
Christy's reply
If we are all spared I’d hope to be back in Autumn of next…thanks for your feedback…crossed the border last night..we are currently camped here in Lancashire
Well christy my husband and the lurgan crew wer at barrowlands on Friday nite. He’s been to a lot of your concerts down threw the years but he says none would hold a candle to friday night’s. I’ve had it all to listen too. So I’m passing on his appreciation especially for the ballad of Kevin Barry. No doubt Conor and the boys from the county Armagh will be back to barrowlands next time. First class concert!
Christy's reply
sound Jacqui….Have to say that last Friday was a humdinger…I’ve played a lot of venues this past 48 years, from the heights of the Carndonagh Carnival (5 pole marquee) right down to Carnegie Hall in all its pomp and glory…no where comes near Mags McIvors old Dancehall in the East End of Glasgow. Its sweaty, hairy, hot and beery but its also beautiful and emotional, the singing is glorious, the hall has history and atmosphere, the staff are on the ball, no frills- just get the gear in and out…….surprised ( but not totally) to hear that Bairds was closed..they were never impressed with punters looking for still or sparkling, they paused for the angelus and stood to attention for Amhrán na Fiann at closing time..( at least those few who were able to stand)..hope your Lurgan 7 got home safe
Thank you once again for a fantastic concert in Edinburgh festival theatre I have seen you in glasgow concert hall narrowband and the Dublin canal theatre just after it was open..my 81year old dad came with us this time he thought you were amazing..thank you till next time take care and “ride on”
Christy's reply
greetings to your Dad…hope Im still going to gigs in 13 years tme..Shine On
Did you have Viva la Quinta Brigada. and belfast brigade in the songs, you usally sing on your concerts? Is two of MANY songs I love to listen on from you
Christy's reply
Quinte Brigada is in most sets….I dont think I have sung the Belfast Brigade since I recorded it in 1969
Fantastic night at the Barrowlands as usual Christy, so many great songs and ballads were aired. Back Home in Derry and The Time has Come being my favourites. It was the first time i’ve heard The Bleacher Lassie of Kelvinhaugh and i was utterly amazed by it and after searching through youtube, your version is by far the best out there. Do you have any plans to record this? I think if you released a version as you sung it on Friday, it would give the song new life. All the best, Sean
Christy's reply
I first heard ‘The Bleacher Lassie’ from Mick Moloney way back in 1965.Later I heard it from Dick Gaughan and Owen Hand in Edinburgh. I decided to chance singing it in Barrowlands and again last night in the Concert Hall. The melody is a joy to sing and the story is based on an older ballad. I used to sing “The Dark Eyed Sailor : years back. Another version of the broken token songs.
So … Michael and Martin go across the water. We watched and listened as toasts were made, accolades heaped on the monarchy, the queen praised for her contribution to peace in the north, support for the English soccer team declared, and the promise of a royal attendee at the 1916 Commemorations announced.
I totally embrace having respect for any nation or culture, but I’m not quite ready to go to the Harmony Hut, hold hands and sing Kumbaya with the Brits just yet. There’s a difference between respect and obeisance and it was the latter that was on display during the president’s visit, as well as a good dose of revisionist history. I’m waiting any day now to see the headline “Moore interrogation at Holyhead all part of the Peace Process”.
I’m glad you’re having a good time across the water, Christy. You are a worthy ambassador in every way. I’ll end with a quote from Thomas Paine who railed against the evils of monarchy prior to the American Revolution: “Of more worth is one honest man to society and in the sight of God, than all the crowned ruffians that ever lived.”
Christy's reply
Morra Lizzie…we played Barrowland in Glasgow the following night..to mark the visit we sang Kevin Barry, two thousand voices sang quietly along….two gigs in two cities….The East End of Glasgow and The West End of London
Hi All.. the never ending tour rolls on and on,,,, getting better and better it seems,,, the Barras Choir surpassed itself on Fri,,, on a totally different note altogether but in line with an on going dual theme running through all the gigs,,, of celebration and lest we forget here is a link to an article of an awful time in my home town, county and country,,,, let us remember,,,, Best of luck for the rest of the tour,, safe travelling all. H
Hi Christy, going to your gig at the Concert Hall in Glasgow tonight. Could you be a pal and play “Unfinished Revolution” for my wife Louise Robertson.
Thanks
Les
Christy's reply
Sorry Les..that song has been off the list for many years..Its one I would need to rehearse before attempting and I dont even have the lyrics with me…Peter Cadle who wrote this song passed in January of 2013….I must look at this fine song again….Peter was part of The Unfinished Revolution
Reminded me of that gig you did none years ago in west Belfast festival just after joe Cahill passed away. My first time at the barrowlands and I will be back once you return in the near future !
What was the song that Declan performed on Friday night?
All the best ceoil agus craic
declan – Belfast
Christy's reply
Declan’s song was “Blood runs thru these veins”…see you back yonder…that was a good night we had for Joe in Beechmount
Hi Christy, thanks for great night at Barrowlands on Friday. Loved it! Going to Concert Hall tonight, with my brother & sister. Just wondered if you could maybe play your tribute song “Rory’s Gone” tonight? We would love to hear it played live! No worries if you can’t play it tonight – I know we’ll love the show regardless! Rory’s dad & our mum were cousins….both Derry folk! Take care, Rosaleen
Great night on Friday – my first time at the Barrowlands & my first time at one of your gigs. As a fireman I especially appreciated & enjoyed your tribute to the Clutha victims – “they never came home”. All the best tonight.
Christy's reply
good man Davy..glad you had a good night…be safe and we’ll meet again
Hey Christie, can’t wait to see you and Declan in London on Good Friday. Can I put in a request for If they come in the Morning? I’ve just recently discovered it and think it’s just brilliant. Still as true today as ever. Thanks.
Christy's reply
“The trade union leaders, the writers, the fighters, the rebels and all
The Women who fought with the scabs at the factory gates
The Sons and The Daughters of un-numbered heroes who paid with their lives
and the people who’s class or creed or belief was their only mistake”..
( from “No Time for Love” by Jack Warshaw )
Another memorable night at the Barrowland. Eight of us there, four from Glasgow and four from Belfast.
What a pleasant surprise your rendition of Kevin Barry was. Probably the first rebel song I ever heard, it took me back to the parties at my Grandparents house in the 1950s.
Thanks Christy.
Christy's reply
This was the first song I ever learned from my mother. It was my first time to sing it in concert . I was stunned when fifteen hundred voices sang along with me. The audience singing in Barrowland last Fri night was the best I have ever encountered. “Quinte Brigada” “Scapegoats” “Galtee Mountain Boy” “Black is The Colour” Sonny’s Dream” to mention a few… I will cherish the memory, the choir still reverberating in me auld baldy head
Hi Christy, thanks for giving us the evening off, it gave Adam and myself a chance to go and see Calvary, a brilliant film, Brendan Gleeson should get an Oscar.
Christy's reply
have you ever heard Brendan play the fiddle? he can fairly knock sparks off the jigs and reels…. his brother, Barry Gleeson, is a very good singer.. he has made some albums of Dublin Songs…I recommend a listen
My family and I are coming to your concert at the Royal Concert Hall on Sunday. We can’t wait as we have always loved your concerts.
My 10 year old son Ronan (McVey) will be joining us for the first time. He loves your music and is really excited. Can you please say hello to Ronan and his gran Una – it would make their day. Hope this is ok to ask.
Thanks Yvonne.
Christy's reply
Dear Ronan..hope you have a great night..its a lovely venue…Christy
Christy,
Thank you for a great night in the Barras, it was an unbelievable show and the atmosphere was second to none. My dad was delighted to hear his name mention, you could not believe how much of a thrill that was. Many thanks.
Take care and have a great time in Glasgow tomorrow night.
Terry
Dear Christy, Words just aren’t enough to describe last night’s gig at the Barrowland. I’m in my late 40s and have been into you since the mid 80’s, never missed a Glasgow gig but last night was phenomenal! It was buzzing, mobbed, sweaty and fabulous! You and Dec surpassed yourselves and that has got to be one of the best nights yet! Tears running down my face whilst singing Bright Blue Rose, me and my man had a ball, thank you so much. I love you truly, deeply, madly. Juls xxx
