Originally from Templemore in Tipp, I’m now living in Australia (last 5 years). I’m a massive fan but unfortunatley was unable to get tickets to your show when I was home at Christmas. Any chance you are coming to do a tour Down Under??!
Anyway a huge thanks for all the entertainment over the years and keep it up. First time I saw you was in the Feile in thurles in the 90’s at some stage!
Thanks again and best Regards,
Donnacha Russell
Christy's reply
sound Tipp…sorry you missed the gig at Xmas…giz a shout if that happens again..we can sometimes find a seat for long haul listeners…..no plans for OZ at the moment…miss my trip up there but the hairyplanes started giving me the heebie jeebies 15 years ago since then my touring has been curtailed to a small area of the globe Galway to Berlin….. Copenhagen to Rome…..plenty of auld kips and ballrooms there to keep an auld balladeer in constant motion…next gig is in Roscrea and we had a right good gig in Clonmel a few months back…ground hurlin all the way
Brilliant gig last night Christy.
With you getting wound up by the “pr**k”, it only seemed to enhance your focus!! You gave a brilliant performance of Magdelen Launderies with all around me in tears at this very moving song. Each one of us bringing our own reasons to be so moved.
Quite a brilliant gig and far better than the last time I saw you and Declan live in Bristol about 10 years ago!!!! Long may you go on.
Christy's reply
Since seeing the Film “Philomena”, I think of Philomena Lee each time I sing Joni Mitchell’s song. This great composition is certainly in my all time top 20 of songs I love to sing…..others that spring to mind include….Lord Baker, Cry like a man, Crazy Diamond, Aisling, Gortatagort,….none of these are sung regularly as they all need the special air
Hi All. Its been some tour,,,the last week or so,,, a few of us were lucky enough ( or mad ??) to be able to go to all the gigs,.. it was great to hear such a variety of songs and meet so many 4711ers from across the globe, even remote Connemara was very well represented !! The venues ranged from Barrowlands to theatres, concert halls and Festival Halls.. all worked well,,,,Normally these very formal settings would not be my first choice of venue but one thing they all share is the quality of sound,,those halls over on the mainland certainly seem well designed which along with the voices and playing of the performers and the skill and experience of the sound crew make for great gigs,,,not forgetting the lighting also..
I think the venue also impacts on the audience and the interaction,,it may take a bit longer for the audience to engage sometimes,,,and what might seem like appropriate behaviour in Barrowlands or Whelans or Dolans or even in Vicar St may not work so well in a concert hall,,,when every sound seems to be carried and amplified,,, of course it also means that gentle chorus singing on songs like Ride On or Bright Blue Rose or Black is the Colour sound wonderful,, But then again I firmly believe that we are all at our personal / individual gig and the challenge for the performers is to try and keep all the customers satisfied !! maybe 2 or 3 thousand of them ,, We pay our money and take our chances…. at the songs that will be sung, hoping that our own favourites will turn up,, hoping that any requests shouted up will be just at the right tone and moment to be heard,,,, hoping for an outing of a rare song.,, hoping for considerate fellow audients,,hoping for more than one encore,,etc etc, I’ve never yet been disappointed at any gig,,and YES all the gigs ARE all different,,,, Enjoy the break now Christy,Declan and Jimmy and all the crew,,,go raibh mile maith agaibh go leir, beir bua agus beannacht,, H
Christy's reply
neither lucky nor mad…I consider your interest in the songs to be mutual to my own….there are those who do not understand but that in itself is understandable…song and singers need listeners…some come to gigs once in a lifetime, others once a year while a small number check in frequently…..prior to this mode of communication I seldom heard the views of others on the work…thanks for all the support
Thanks for a fantastic gig. As an ex-patron of the Clutha, it was great to hear the tribute. Late last year my soulmate passed away from cancer and ‘The Voyage’ has always been one of our favourite tracks, it expresses so much how I felt looking after her. I wish she could have been there physically, but she was certainly there in spirit. Beautiful set.
Christy's reply
we are blest to have the company of those who travel with us in spirit..to have known and loved them
Hi christy
I’m unfortunately one of the pricks in question . As you started the Shane song I said go on Shane . And I had said go on christy at the start of natives . I apologise for this release of excitement but on the same hand I was disappointed with your reaction , calling me a prick and telling me you would have me sorted and my money back . It defiantly put me in my place . You then sang nancy Spain as I told you before that was my grandmothers and daughters name and it’s the first time that I dident enjoy hearing it. . I thought it was only right to leave then . I have music in my veins and I have the upmost respect for musicians . My family are great singers , songwriters and players . Tom madden a great banjo player from Ireland is an uncle of mine .
I find it hard to sit still and and not get excited when I hear a great singer or song . I’m sure you’ve felt the same at times. . I’ve listened to your music since I moved to London as a boy , 27 years ago . And love the songs you have brought . What I did was a sign of affection not disruption but obviously it was taken the wrong way . I’m sure back in the early days a fella shouting go on Christ would have inspired you . You know if you get an encore you go home feeling like a king . Sorry again if I spoiled your night along with my own .
Christy's reply
Hi TBone,
sorry that you ruined your own night…( by the way it was not me that called you a prick, it was a fellow audient)…… unfortunately you seemed not realise the effect that your bellowing was having on both audience and performers…in an audience of over two thousand listeners 3 or 4 members of the audience kept cutting right across the performance with meaningless interjections….it threw me to the extent that it stopped me in my tracks…of course I had to respond to your interjections..after you ( and 3 others ) departed the night settled down and we were all able to get back on track…..many of us have Nancys in our lives TBONE….I wish you well..thank you for taking the trouble to write
You never fail Big Man, Thank you for last night. Rocky Road was the highlight for me, a song ive heard by 100 other artists but never like that, incredible.
As for “the prick” i think he got the message.
ps i put a card onstage from my sister, did you get it?
Christy's reply
not yet, sometimes the cards dont come thru til the following gig..all the crew were packing quick last night to make the Holyhead boat
What a brilliant night on Friday, I have been several times to see you at the Royal Festival Hall, but this was by far the best. The introduction of ( sorry I’ve forgotten the guys name ) the drums made a great show even better. All the songs were perfect and I also enjoyed Declans solo effort and I will definitely be checking out his album. There were two stand out moments for me, well three, Spancil Hill is an all time favourite of mine and to hear you sing it was just fantastic, but your solo encore of The Rocky Road to Dublin was something else just you and the badhran, you could have heard a pin drop and three was you threatening to chuck the loud mouth out, hilarious. Can wait till the next time and the next …….
Christy's reply
thanks to you Tony and to other correspondents for your comments re the Friday gig…I was a bit despondent thinking that I had not delivered last night….. we’ve been having a good run but I allowed myself to be distracted by 3 or 4 over-excited audients and it did have an effect on the night for a while after…but we got back on track and thankfully the night ended on a high note…the old Rocky Road had not been in my repertoire for over 40 years until last month in Kilkenny someone called for it and I took a chance on it..its such a brilliant bit of writing, so descriptive..heard someone claim recently that it was written by the same person who wrote Lanigan’s Ball….never occurred to me before…
the percussion man is Jimmy Higgins from Galway…he is a top man in the traps
Friday was my first Christy gig for at least15 years and I’m delighted that it didn’t disappoint. It’s the first time I’ve seen you playing with Declan Sinnot and I was mesmerised by him. I think he stole the show, but in a good way. More power to all your elbows. Come back again soon.
Christy's reply
thats sound Boc…as long as you are brought to the realm of the mesmeric we dont mind who steals the show…our tour ended last night and we all went our separate ways…its been a good 10 days with gigs in Edinburgh, Glasgow (2) Manchester and London (2)…..bit of family time now before the tour recommences in Roscrea in two weeks time…there I will commence a series of gigs with Mairtín O’Connor’s Band
Christy, I hope you and Declan and the lads had a great gig. For myself I spent the gig bathed in a warmth that is not replicated quite like that anywhere else. From where I was sitting I could see the timer at your feet. As each minute passed I wish the timer would stop but mostly I was and always will be supremely impressed that you all work so hard to bring something that brings out the best and the worst in people. See you soon. Maybe at a Wimbledon match when we’ve returned to the premier league and are giving West Ham a sound thrashing. As ever xx
Christy's reply
Next time Wimbledon play West Ham lets go burst a few bubbles. Good to glimpse ye last night after the encore….
Many thanks to all concerned for two great gigs at the Festival Hall….different atmospheres at each gig but both Brill! The highlight, for me, was probably Rocky Road…..totally breathtaking. Nearly didn’t reach the Friday gig due to a fire on a train blocking the line and, on the Thursday, someone tried to ‘poison’ me by putting chicken in my vegetarian wrap…..but it all adds to the experience. Hope you get lots of Choccy Eggs tomorrow. Thank you again, the gigs were wonderful.
Christy's reply
very different gigs….thanks for feedback…have happy meat-free Easter
Quick question Christy – do you ever cover Phil Coulter’s Scorn not his simplicity ?
I wished I’d asked sooner as I have a memory of Luke singing this to me as a young boy at the meeting of the waters in Avoca … Life has moved on and the song never left me .. I have a severely autistic son and to hark back ( I’m sure you’d make Luke proud !) would be truly special for me and my wife ( although it could easily have seen us flee in floods !!) another favourite is among the Wicklow hills – happy memories of Baltinglass with my Grandfather telling me tales of Dwyer and Macallister … And long days in Clane … Wished we’d had a beer at sometime – maybe St. Anthony will sort that one .
Christy's reply
its a great song that but one I have never contemplated..there is a great version somewhere on the inter tube…. between Turnham Green and Gunnersbury..have you ever heard “Dunlavin Green”? I’d say your Grandfather knew that one…
” Michael Dwyer of the mountain has plenty of cause for the spleen
For the loss of his own loyal comrades, shot on Dunlavin Green”
……….best wishes to you and your family
Lots of laughs and “something in my eye” during Black is the Colour and the beautiful Liverpool tribute. Loved that Missing You and Sweet Thames were in there for us ex-pats. My dad has been following you and singing and playing from the Christy Moore songbook for as long as I can remember. I brought him tonight for his birthday and he enjoyed as much as I. Thanks for a great performance to all three of you. The ovation was well deserved.
Christy's reply
Thanks Jess..glad you and your Da had a good night….I’m ready for a good chill out after 2 nights at the RFH….see you along the road
Lovely evening Christy thank you. Saw you at Glastonbury a few years ago and in the Olympia in Dublin nearly 30 yrs ago. This time I had my wife Linda, my 20 yr old daughter Ciara and my youngest daughter Darcey, aged 6. We all loved the passion in your performance. Please say happy birthday to Ciara (last Mon) and Darcey ( this Thurs coming) .
Niall and family. Respect.
Christy's reply
Belated Happy birtday Ciara..have a good day Darcey…thank you all for coming out to hear the songs..always a buzz to gain new listeners..you keep us old singers on our toes
Great gig tonight Christy (apart from “the pr**k” who kept heckling)!! As a bodhran player it was great to see ya play a few tunes with it and made the show for me. Hope to see you either in my home town of Beal Feirste or here across the water soon.
Hi Christy.. just a wee note to say thank you from the Imlach clan we had a fantastic time at the Barrowlands and you were absolutely right.. the atmosphere is amazing.. take care til the next time.. lots of love Fiona xx
Christy's reply
“O Glory Hallelujah..The Cod Liver Oil and The Orange Juice”..great to see ye all again…. the 152 62459 crew
My fiance Eadaoin and I are really looking forward too seeing you perform tonight in “London town”, if there is any chance ,,,could you Please play “beeswing” as it Eadaoin’s Birthday today and one of our favorites.
Best of Luck
Go raibh maith agat
Hi Christy.I’ve done a recording of one of your tunes with the lyrics changed to Celtic related lyrics. How do I go about getting your permission to use the song ? I can send you a recording of it.
Christy's reply
work away Billy…all my notes are floating around in the air…sung every day by the birds and the bees…take what you want and sing out to your hearts content
