sending you the best of wishes for your special day – and many more years of good health and good music. It was a blessing for us all the day you made your first appearance on earth – i wonder was the theme from Cal playing somewhere in the background:)

Hi Christy
Just catching up on all the posts after a few weeks absence. Sounds like all have enjoyed the gigs. Still gutted to have missed the Bridgewater due to holiday commitments. Note to self: Check the tour guide before booking long lazy afternoons in the Spanish sun with an iced Marguerita for company. Might be over in the Lismore area in June sometime as a friend is opening a pub there so I’ll check out if your nearby. Look after yourself and yours.
OH……..and it’s raining in Oldham as usual

a few lazy afternoons in the Spainish Sun sounds good to me….
Great night and gig in Roscrea, amazing..everytime…nice spot on LLS, amazing what we dont know..will check out the book..
Hoping to chat with Ralph McTell via phone on Sin é Radio show this evening, Tues 6th, ahead of his Irish Tour..we will have a pair of tickets to give away to see Ralph in The Helix Theatre, Dublin, as part of his Irish tour. we will play some songs of his and plug his dates and venues. http://www.dublincityfm.ie at 9pm on 103.2fm or listen live on internet through website. Thanks for the space..see you soon, enjoy Ennis..hup hup .L
. Fair play Christy only seen Late Late now, it was your name that drew me to watch, I didn’t think the story was going to be so raw and graphic, there was something very cathartic about hearing Thomas. I think his story is freeing up something in the Irish repressed collective conscious. I think we can now say “yes the rotten f@#kers did screw us all, yes here is solid proof in one man’s story, Now! we know, Now! we can heal, now we can move on knowing that something has been released – the FECKIN TRUTH!”. In the words a good ould Christy “Don’t forget your shovel” if your gonna vote for Fianna Fail because you’ll need to dig yourself outa some serious s@#t by the time their finished with us
Christy's reply
I hope this book will be read by many…it throws light into some very dark places….if only it prevented such cruel, selfish,power-hungry and vicious men from gaining control in future times… Thomas Kilmartin Junior’s words still ring in my ears….when he asked “where are the prosecutions for corruption” ” where are the prosecutions for perjury.”….
We sent a man to prison over Garlic Tax…we jail people over hash, for robbing trainers….. meanwhile corrupt Politicians, Bankers,Developers,Speculators,Regulators,Builders and crooks seem immune to prosecution, appear to be protected from the rigours of the Law…..many of those who brought us down are still operating, others sneaking back into position to commence operating again, others out and about on huge pensions and perks,
as the songs say, theres One Law for The Rich and One law for The Poor….
Attending a good gig gives you a lift for a few days but a truly great gig gives you a buzz that I don’t think ever really leaves you. It’s over three weeks since my daughter Ruth and myself had the pleasure of attending our first Christy Barrowlands gig! (in your last tour l had taken her to see you at the Concert Hall for the first time). I knew it was your favourite venue but now I definitely know why! You created magic in the east end of Glasgow that Friday and the atmosphere was as electric as Celtic Park on European nights!
Thank you,and also Declan and Jimmy, for giving us a special night that we will never, ever forget. Sometimes life can throw challenges at us to try to increase feelings of vulnerability but nights like you gave us at Barrowlands provides so many people with real strength and inspiration. Jackson gave us the words but Christy, you bring them to life better than anyone: your music does keep our spirits high. Thank you.
Christy's reply
good to get a flashback to Barrowland…I have conjectured before about what makes the old venue so special, special for the audience, for the songs and for myself…I just love that old ballroom…it is run down, it has no comfort zones, the dressing room is extremely old school but I love arriving there…walking up the old stairs past the posters..arriving into that room always feels like coming home, (dont ask me why)…the dressing room is utterly unique, we’re all in together, crew, band, catering, then the crowd begin to assemble and usually start to sing about 15 minutes before show time…..theres just nowhere like Mags McIvor’s…glad you and your Lass had a good one….I look forward, hopefully, to returning again
Hi All…. It was a mighty gig in Roscrea,,, and yes Petra was spot on the version of Bright Blue Rose was beautiful… just think loads more Trad gigs to come,,, while at the same time Declan seems to getting a great response to his solo gigs, with Vicky and enjoying them too….there is a tide in the affairs of,,,,, I also caught that Herosongs programme on RTE RADIO 1 @ 7.30 pm on Sat,,imagine Maryline was listening too in the Southern Hemisphere ?…,, I remember you sang Dunlavin Green in Blessington 30th June 2012 I think ? Beir bua agus beannacht… H
Christy's reply
“Michael Dwyer of the mountains had plenty of cause for the spleen,
for the loss of his own loyal comrades, shot down on Dunlavin Green”
Do you sometimes sing Dunlavin Green even for yourself ? It came up in the 1st of the 8-part serie “Herosongs” on RTE radio 1 on saturdays, a great serie about songs and history, nice to hear Franck Harte and other gem-diggers on it.
Christy's reply
I did record it on the 1978 album “The Iron Behind The Velvet”. I seldom sing it these days but ,as Hilary noted,I sang it at a concert in County Wicklow last year. There are any versions, some with variants.Gerry O’Reilly of The Góilín Singers Club does a particularily rousing version. If memory serves,Andy Rynne of Prospersous was the first I heard singing it back in the 60s.
Great listening to you guys on The Late Late last night , a lot of us are aware now of how corrupt our government was then but when you listen about individual cases like Thomas Gilmartins it sounds very sad and embarrasing how he was treated , in your own words lets hope this kind of thing never happens again and people like him should be embraced and welcomed back into our beautiful country and given the respect they deserve. On a lighter note looking forward to Glor next week , Svetlana became a proud Irish citizen last month …although she loves everything you sing ….you might play Black is the colour its one of her favorites…if you can fit it in of course .God bless Christy
Jimi.
Christy's reply
Fáilte Svetlana…we are steaming towards the banner…Glór is just coming into view
Great to hear you back in Roscrea, Christy. Martin, Cathal, Seamie, Jimmy and yourself brought us a grand night of song, music and…. wit. Thank you for the kind words. Tom and Lucy.
Christy's reply
it was inspiring to see you both at the racket….its always a joy to meet the long haul listener again….thanks for all the great gigs…I reckon its over 40 years since you brought Planxty to Roscrea
unfortunately not a lot has changed in society but I’m gonna look forward in reading Thomas Gilmartin’s new book.
Its gas because that tribunal went on so long I kinda forgot what it was about, (as I had turf to foot ) but tonight it kinda brought it all back to me of all the corruption that actually went on.
well done in high lighten the issues again and I’ll see ya down in the patrician school with rubber come june.
Christy's reply
we’ll raise the roof that night (if we are all spared)…. Newbridge, Here We Come !
So we are after the first trad gig of this season … The concert last night in Roscrea was a treat and just wonderful … It was palpable that you, Christy, and the band enjoyed it just like we did – the jigs and reels were mind-blowing. And it‘s amazing to hear a well-known song sparkle and sound like new with all the fiddle, box and banjo accompaniment – wasn’t it one of the most beautiful Bright Blue Roses ever? The lovely audience with their harmony singing added to a perfect concert. Many thanks to you, Christy, to Maírtín, Cathal, Seamie and Jimmy for a great gig. The special welcome for the German delegation was much appreciated and we are looking forward to your concerts in Ennis in one week. In the meantime we will enjoy some days at leasure on the island. Lots of love from Uwe and me.
Christy's reply
lovely to see ye at the front last night,,hope you catch a good time in the West..
Thanks so much for the reply, Mr. Moore! Here’s the first verse-
“When I was a boy I’d look out in the harbor, and Id wonder where all those ships would go
I’d see freighters bound for New England, and cruise ships bound for Mexico
I’d stare off down the track and watch some old train roll out of sight
And wonder where it was going, and where that engineer would spend the night”
(I have two more verses and a chorus, just don’t wanna bore anybody too much at first!)
Christy's reply
Thats a lovely verse there Mickey…I look forward to hearing the song
Very best wishes on your birthday, dear Christy!

Happy Birthday, Christy, and many more to come – enjoy your day! See you in Ennis in a couple of days. Best wishes from Uwe and me.
