Christy's reply
a happy return to Newry Town..glad it all went well for you ..shine on
What an other great chat, reflective and uplifting as usual. That piece of writing upon Lord Baker was a bit of a lese-majesty crime, will you publicly burn the heretic after we finish laughing ? Can’t wait to read Davoc’s take on Little Musgrave next 🙂 Hup Hup Hup everyone !
Christy's reply
Thanks for your feedback..great to hear from Chile…to know that the songs are resounding across The Bay of Santiago….we send love to you and your family this Autumn night as September man saddles up another year
well christy, thomas kinsella is my name, i’m son of tom who you knew years ago. i have come across the words of the ridge and coolcullen brigade roughly scribbled out. i was wondering do you have the words to your version and what tune is it sung to. if you could help with that , it would be great. just to know the song for local record.
Christy's reply
Hey there young Tom Kinsella….we had some good times Me and your Da..he was my tour manager when I hung out up The Protestant Road…we travelled from The Coalmine to Leo Conways, we toured from The Ridge to Muckalee. we got ambushed in Mooneenroe…I’ll have to go back into the archive to check out “The Ridge and Coolcullen Brigade”..I’ll be in touch…Up Coon
Another great chat Christy – evocative of the great variety of musical experiences and uniqueness of each gig. Especially glad to relive the memory of the Boyle John Reilly gig with the fabulous Grehan Sisters. That gig will be a highlight in the memory for many years – can still visualise you singing whilst holding the can he tinkered, and the warm, friendly chat with the sisters afterwards. Such memories help lift the spirits on the gloomy nights when the darkness creeps in. Keep doing what you do Christy – it’s where the light gets inn.
Christy's reply
Putin got Pussy Riot, Obama got Dixie Chicks, we got The Grehan Sisters.”Green Grows The Laurel, Soft Falls The Dew”
So I’m here, just eaten a week’s worth of crisps and chocolate and on the blood sugar crash that inevitably follows. Energy low, mood even lower when I hear the ping of an email on the old IPad. I’ll have a look thinks I and its only the first Christy chat for a while. Bingo, this will improve my demeanour is my first thought. I wasn’t disappointed. What a mood lifter my friend. As ever, your lyrical descriptive abilities transport me to the places you are describing (most of which I’ve never been to and couldn’t find on a map) and I’m again planning a few weeks in Ireland to see you play in the intimate venues that usually give the greatest satisfaction for the listener and performer alike. I’ve seen you many, many times in Glasgow and the gigs have all been mighty but only once in a smaller venue and that was Edinburgh maybe 20 years ago. Can’t remember it’s name but very steep seating, more like a lecture theatre from memory. Anyway, I’ll doubtless not get around to doing the tour of Ireland I keep thinking about, but the thinking about it lifted my spirits hugely tonight. More power to your keyboard digits Christy. See you next time in Glasgow when myself and Griffin will make our annual pilgrimage. I just finished One True Voice. A superb read, really brings the songs and associated stories to life. I’d say you could be writing a new one now to bring us up to date although that might be a retirement project for when you eventually get sick of the travelling. Another fifteen years gigging minimum I’d say. I can wait! Take care and keep strumming.
Christy's reply
Fair play David..you The Man..first up best dressed….I’m gonna start that book any day now…those crisp & choclate pig-outs are fierce debilatating..had a few right sickeners myself in bygone days…bloody hotel room shite, pringles and tobelrone, nuts and mars bars…a fella would nearly be better off on the piss..I think that Edinburgh gig might have been The Traverse Theatre..next Glasgow trip may be next October ..who knows, maybe see you before then, hither or thither
Hiya Christy,
just wondering is there any chance you’ll be coming back over to Germany soon? I was at your brother’s concert a few days ago and he was just amazing….and it reminded me that it’s been a few years since you were here. Go raibh mile maith agat, Clodagh
Christy's reply
Fáilte romhat Clodagh….There have been whispers about a visit but nothing definite to report at the moment….traversing the highways and byeways of Hibernia currently..returning today to Newry, County Down after an absence of 11 years…greetings to all German Songbirds,Linnets and Listeners….ar agaidh linn..Criostóir
Mornin…grand gigs goin on I hear..nice one…
This day last week I was eatin food in “Butterstown” with my Dutch supplier, Brian. I was recalling gigs ‘coz he mentioned he was going to The Gate the next night to see Pride & Prejudice…thats where the bauld Christy launched The Big Issue magazine sez me..and if Im not mistaken, he opened with Before The Deluge and Keith Donald walked down the theatre playing the tenor sax as accompaniment..I think 1994…but then I said to Brian…I could’ve dreamed all that…may never have happened…like the 2 seperate LP covers for “whatever tickles your fancy “…but I know I was there..Any recall yourself? Just so I know Im defo not gettin cabin fever…
Christy's reply
Larball…I did indeed launch the Big Issue in The Gate in the 90s..yes ,I was joined by my old Moving Hearts buddy….he came down through the audience blowing his Tenor Sax like there was no tomorrow..there used to be a Bootleg of that gig floating about..I recall buying one off a shady character on O”Connell Bridge about a month after the gig..it featured Johnny Duhan’s song “100 Miles From Home”……. as Patsy would say…”you gimme fever”
Hey Christy,
I have been singing on the circuit this past 28yrs, performing mostly a lot of your songs, I did support to The Dubliners in Brittany in 1998 and really looking forward to your concert in Canal Court Newry on Wed night, Ur music has been the inspiration that got me involved in the music business and i have never looked back.
Though the one thing that I am missing is one photograph with yourself, it has always been a dream come true to get that, I have hand painted portraits around the house of yourself and some of Luke Kelly and i even have a hand carved wooden portrait of urself. Myself and a folk band that are resident in Canal court are doing a folk session downstairs after your concert, Could it be possible to meet you during the day of the concert as I live beside the hotel just to get that photo that I always longed for,
Let the music keep your spirits High!!!!!
Thanks so much for the fantastic concert in Armagh the 19 th. !
We were four guys from Norway sitting on the front row, listening, watching, closing our eyes, and singing. We’ll never forget this evening.
As far as I am concerned, I’ve been a fan of yours since approx. 1984, when I accidently heard some beats from ‘Remember the brave ones’ in the appartment underneath. A Norwegian couple who had been studying in Dublin, was playing (loudly) the album: Dark end of the street. I borrowed this, along with another Moving Hearts album, Live in Dublin 1978 and Your ‘black’ solo album (great), and more trad. albums (several Planxty). After this I was bitten by the ballad bug…. In 1986 I went to Ireland for the first time (Inter-rail with a friend), and went to Killarney (Gleneagle Hotel) to listen to your solo concert there. In the years to come been buying loads of CDs …Concert with Planxty in London 2005… You and Declan in Vicar street a couple of years ago …..
Come to Oslo sometime, Christy – you’ve got fans in every corner of the world, you know!
Christy's reply
My only gig in your country was Bergen in 1977. Maybe some day I will have the pleasure of a gig in Oslo,,,who knows what way the wind blows….thanks for your support
Hiya Christy!
Just wanted to say what a fantastic gig you, Jimmy and Declan played in Newcastle the other night. I was so thrilled to be sitting in the front row!!… and loved when you sang a Stitch in Time, one of my absolute favourites. Fair play to ye Christy, looking forward to your next visit!
Bernadette
Christy's reply
it was a grand gathering….lovely crowd of listeners in a fine concert room..the songs reverberated and brought us all together….over the past 10 years my Ulster gigs have mainly been in Belfast and Derry…great to be out and about the Province again
I had a really vivid dream last night. I dreamt I was at a Christy concert and at half-time you came to have a conversation with me (swoon). We were having a good aul yarn and then I awoke in Californ-i-a, many miles from … I was so disappointed.
Anyway, I’m coming home for a few weeks and will be going to the Gaza gig. When I bought tickets for it, I had no clue if I’d be able to attend, but things are working out and I’ve booked the flight. It’s great that you are doing this benefit, Christy. You are a good person.
I watched the All-Ireland today and it was a bit disappointing considering the exciting encounters we’ve been having recently. I hope the hurling is another mighty match next weekend.
Hi Christy, With reference to “the unfortunates and the story of Tuam”. Van driver 18th Sept 2014.
Infant Angels.
I was born in hell
If I could find a well
To take me from this stain
And give my soul a name
But this was not to be
My heart was born for misery
My soul denied a face
To take me from this place
Those demons in their haunt
They harmonize and chant
With all that loss and pain
And me without a name
No meadows did I roam
With flowers of petals bright
To take my mother home
And fill her soul with light
Or sit upon her knee
Or gaze into her eyes
And let her mesmerize
My little heart and me
Open all those dungeons deep
Where victims of your terrors rest
For You and all the world to see
Till every infants soul is blessed
And you you’ve earned your hell
Those infant souls have left their tombs
Gone off where infant angels dwell
Far from that evil grave in Tuam
With Kind Regards.
John.
Christy's reply
Thanks for sharing John, always good to hear from you…hard to believe that its 33 years since you sang your song into my ear in a crowded, noisy, wild,after-hours Baggott Inn…. “the secret of the water’s sound”
Good to hear the good reports from Down and Armagh. All being well i’ll catch up beside the Lake of Shadows. Big day in Croke today – hope we don’t have Civil War among the 4711 crew after the Kingdom and Tír Chonail clash. Hope Marty Mc recovers well after falling out of the palm tree ;). Sorry to see the 4711 site down too – hope it rises again. Keep well.
Christy's reply
no report yet on the downing of 4711ers site…..
……..yesterdays game did not live up to expectations but that wont bother the victors….having had so many good games this year, anticipation was too high…apart from the occasional high fielding it was an unremarkable spectacle……..our own outings in Armagh and Newcastle went very well….great to see the younger ones coming along for the first time..makes for a good mix of ages among the audience… 3 generations of some families coming along together to hear the songs…this is wonderful to witness
Christy, Declan and Jimmy! Thanks very much for a great night in………….. Oops nearly forgot Newcastle! Another unforgettable night for the memoirs!
