I love your Chats, Christy. I read and re-read them, mining them for all the nuggets of interesting information and descriptions of gigs, outings, people and places etc. … the farmer in Leitrim with his ice-cream brought a smile to my face.
This was a double chat in the sense that you included Davoc Rynne’s piece. I love what he wrote about John Reilly and was laughing out loud at his description of the girls in Grehan’s as “exotic mots” who, with the passing of time, are now “slightly fading exotics”. When he talked about fleadhs in Roscommon, the memories came flooding back, although mine pertain to the 70s rather than the 60s. The first fleadh of the year was always looked forward to, and I recall the organisers opening up the courthouse when the event was in Ballaghaderreen for those of us who had nothing but a sleeping bag or maybe not even that. Court cases went on all night … We were eejits back then, but it was great.
I had just come in from a gig the other night when I read your chat and I concur with what you say about loving gigs. Obviously, over here, I don’t get to many Irish ones, so I tend to live vicariously through your or the “guests” accounts of concerts. That Goilin session sounded fantastic. When you attend a gig, since you are a performer, do you find yourself being more analytical or critical than the rest of us non-musician types?
I have to give a shout out to the group I saw the other night. They are called Gov’t Mule and are a great rock/blues band. Somebody should bring them to the Rory Gallagher festival.
Let the music keep our spirits high …

What makes The Góilín special is that it is not a gig. It is a gathering of people who love to sing and listen to songs. No one is judged and everyone gains equal respect and attention.95% of the songs sung are Trad. Occasionally a visitor might burst into an operatic aria, someone else might “say a pome” or give a blast of a recitation. Seldom a night passes without some gem-song being revealed.Very seldom do”professional” or “full time” singers turn up.They receive the same respect and attention as a person singing nervously in public for the first time. There are a growing number of similar gatherings taking place around the country…..
………going to a “gig”, for me, requires a different mind set….going to hear a professional act perform for up to 2 hours brings a whole set of critical faculties into focus…apart from the artist and material, theres the sound and lighting, the vibe in the venue, dreaded iphones and ipads held aloft (by selfish twats with no regard for those sitting behind them,) the seats ,the sightlines,…then there are expectations to be fulfilled…its a complex experience to analyse…..a gathering of singers is far easier to navigate
Hi Christy, thank you replying earlier, the Craigavon Two group would like to meet with you to discus the case, if you would email us your reply please. justice4thetwo@gmail.com, Many Thanks
although we missed your Newry gig (and many preceding ones) we are after a great music weekend … And we even heard on Friday ‚First Time Ever I Saw Your Face‘, ‚Black Is The Colour‘ and ‚I’m A Bogman‘: Your brother Barry did a brilliant concert at the Fabrik in Hamburg, last leg of his Germany tour. Luka told in epic broadness how you turned his own bogman upside out and made a completely new song of it … Glad we don’t have to take sides … 😉
And do you remember the Swedish trio Väsen playing nyckelharpa, viola and 12-string-guitar? They were with the Masters of Tradition in 2012 and left us mesmerized .. Since then we were trying to catch one of their gigs and we saw them yesterday in Germany near Hannover. It was a beautiful venue, the convent room of a monastery holding some 60 persons, a very intimate setting. I’m still buzzing from the sheer beauty of the music we heard.
Enjoyed reading your latest chat – what a pity that sweet little Bantry town is having economy problems, hope they will recover ..
Keep well, Christy – we hope to see you soon along the way, maybe even in Germany again ??
Christy's reply
thanks for sharing some news of my Brother’s gig in Fabrik….I have good memories of playing there with my old friend Jimmy Faulkner…we did a German Tour in 1978…best wishes to you Petra and all you German Songsters
Am still on a high Christy from Wednesday nites gig in Newry and from getting my first Photo with you and the Plectrum and all the stuff autographed by yourself, Many thanks.
Loved the new verses to Delirium Tremens about Diageo etc it was hilarious and added a brilliant mix to the gig as usual.
Was just thinking about the Barrowlands dvd that I have of yourself and having played there myself doing support to the Wolfe Tones for 3 yrs in a row in front of 2000 people from year 2011 to 2013, I myself have never experienced anything like the atmosphere of that venue in my life, You never wanted it to end,
Will you be doing that venue again at any stage.

Oct 2015 is being talked about for a possible return to The Clyde..I’m hoping it happens so as we can climb the stair one more time and dance beneath the carousel of healing…sign up for the newsletter and we’ll keep you posted

Good luck to Richie in Clonakilty..hope his exhibition goes well, he richly deserves that his work be acclaimed….roll on Bantry..sorry to report the passing of Barney Rushe…great balladsinger and author of many great songs including “Nancy Spain” and “The Crack was Ninety”..I first met Barney in Jersey in 1969
Hello Christy, I hope you are keeping well. Many thanks for a great gig on Thursday night in Newry! Janice and I had a lovely night and could you thank Paddy for a great view. I have to say the quality of the sound at your gigs is always superb, the best I’ve heard. I’ve been at a few over the last year where I couldn’t hear the singing at all and when I can’t make out the words it just doesn’t work for me. The new songs are working well and the classics are still sounding fresh. I was humming Mandolin Mountain ever since. Nice to see Decky and Tina too. The First Time was beautiful and a nice way to honour Ewan MacColl. Long may the tour continue! Baby Sam is over 10 months now and I’m hoping to get him to a gig soon!
Many Thanks, Kevin
Christy's reply
Just back home after a full weekend of singing at the annual Frank Harte Festival…..Glad ye enjoyed Newry. Thanks for your positive feedback on our sound. I have been working these past12 years with David Meade.I first encountered his sound mixing skills at a concert in the old Rialto Cinema in Derry circa 1995. Seven years later I was seeking a new Sound Engineer and managed to track him down. He has been mixing my sound ever since. David is a musician himself and having him at the mixing desk is akin to having another player in the Band. It gives me great confidence knowing that, no matter how quietly I sing, he will deliver the lyric around the venue.Same thing applies to all our production crew.We are all part of a team.
Many thanks again Christy for taking the time to give us your latest Chat. It’s like sitting down with a good friend and a pot of good tea to enjoy a catch up with their stories and reminiscences (as a member of the Boyle clan I’m honoured that one of ours would have been your last ever customer in the National Bank!).It’s great that an artist of your stature gives us your prospective on the gigs and tours round the country. The magic of your live performances means that even six months after Barrowland, when a particular song comes on the CD in the car the buzz from the gig is still there. It’s clear that just as the song goes, ‘it’s a two way situation, you get a lot of pleasure when you sing’. Thanks again for bringing special things into so many people’s lives.

glad you like the auld chats Kevin…the time it takes is time well spent.. more fulfilling and useful then nights spent in the sheebeens of yesteryear…not that I regret all of those times for many great friendships formed and many songs sung as we sported with Bacchus and Venus
The Madness that comes with being in an All-Ireland Final has passed over….not a great game and the better team on the day won out in the end as is nearly always the case.
So now we look forward to the two gigs in the Hills……I was lucky enough to win Two tickets for the Buncrana show in a competition on the Local Highland radio……well it’s nice to win something in September !!
Christy's reply
I think ye emptied the tank when batin the Boys in Blue…the final was a damp squib after the excitement of the semis…well done with the tickets
Had a fine fine evening had a great seat (front row right in front of you). We planned our holiday around getting to see you at Newry. It was well worth it, it was also a pleasure to shake your had a briefly speak with you. In England my band works with Sean Cannon he also has a great respect for you. I and my partner had such a great time, oh and thanks for the plectrum.
Christy's reply
fair play to you Kev….good to meet you ,however briefly,in Newry….after myself,Declan and Jimmy you had the next best seat in the house ! Give my best wishes to Sean C. I first met him in The Cofas Tree Folk Club in Coventry circa 1968….
Well Christy, what a night. Wehave been looking forward to the gig for months and it did not disappoint. We sang our hearts out and were surrounded by people doing the same. You seemed to really enjoy the show also.Jim was in a trance like state on the drums , he was just great as was Declan. It is a mixture of emotions every time we see you Christy. My highlights where , The time has come. Shovel, A stitch in time and city of Chicago. The smaller venues make for such intimate gigs. Thanks for a great night. From Tony and Julie .

Dear Christy,
Always looking foreword to your chat, it makes me feel being in Ireland a bit.
You mentioned the gig in Boyle with the Grehan Sisters (a wonderful evening) and than your next gig was in Cork, but did you forget Sligo on 27/6 ?
I was there so I won’t.
It’s true what you wrote about Bantry. We visited it last year when we came over for your gig in Wexford, indeed a beautiful setting but a bit abandoned.
There was a Dutch couple with a B&B who asked us to take over their business !
I’ll hope to find the film about Ireland you mentioned.

Christy, your singing has brought me a lot of happiness over the years. I first heard your voice on tape in my auntie’s car at the age of seventeen, and fell in love with ‘Ride On’.My little (then only three or four years old) cousin used to shout out for ‘Derry’ to be played. I am a wee bit older now (!) but still a big fan of your soft yet passionate voice and poetic songs. You don’t seem to have aged a day. Love from Karen 🙂

Hi Christy, I am a bit of a troglodyte….so it took me a long time to figure out the workings of the site! Anyway just want to say thanks for all the great shows over the years…. first saw you in jan or feb 73 in the City Hall in Cork when I persuaded a friend to accompany me to see Planxty. We had a great night and I’ve been a comitted fan ever since. When I got wind of the John Reilly concert I scooted down to Carrick -on shannon immediately for the tickets, as I had never seen the Grehan sisters, but had often heard my husband talk of seeing them in Abbeyshrule way back. So the chance of seeing them with Christy Moore couldn’t be missed. We really enjoyed the show esp. Lord Baker one of my favourites….the atmosphere was zinging with anticipation and it didn’t disappoint.
Already this year we’ve seen you in Mullingar, Athlone (before Christmas) Bord gais and then Boyle … each show was unique and memorable. Enjoyed the latest chat…..Good health and long life to enjoy it, Take care..till the next time kairita

And everyday battles we all need
A little laughter something I get from your humorous songs

I especially love Joxer and the knock song. Make me smile every time without fail. I hope you get a smile outta this . Will be working on building site in dub in October . Are you playing up there any time around then . Charleville seems like ages ago now . Shine on
Did you ever have a day of total madness
Of mishy marshy thoughts inside ur brain
What’s the price these days of curly wurly s
How fast can a car go in the slow lane
Whatever happened to the roller disco
Is the secrete of the fig roll really known
What height is the milky bar kid now
With all them bars he must be fully grown
Oh my brain is like a trampoline all morning
Like the tub inside a big ol washing machine
I’m not one for full moons but I’m beleiving
Are the Martians really forty shades of green
Do Chinese people get irish tribal tattoos
On their arms an across their lower back
Saying :you can’t beat a bit of hairy bacon
Or the black stuff is mighty for the Craic
Is a chicken wrap a jumper for a hen
Would a paccisvist eat a battered fish
Would boiling holy water be a sin
Can a French kiss ever go amiss
Do columbians all dance like shakira.
The way her hips don’t lie it isn’t fair
Would I better off doing sieges down in ennis
With Josephine my lovely rose of Clare
Why do they even call it pocket money
When it’s the one place you can never make it stay
When you hurt that bone it isn’t really funny
Has fungie family down in dingle bay
The thoughts inside my head are leaping at me
If I don’t close my eyes I think I’ll faint
I’ll have to try and find my iodine tablets
Who taught that Michelangelo to paint
I wonder is there petrol in my chainsaw
There’s a huge tree up in Galway with my name
Government planted it for me back in zero zero
I ll cut it now lads if it’s all the same
Oh my brain is like a trampoline all evening
Like the tub inside a big ol washing machine
I’m not one for full moons but I’m beleiving
Are the Martians really forty shades of green
Just for the Craic.

Morning
Great to read the new chat, although I think that’s an oxymoron.
Always interesting and inspiring. You’ve left me with no choice but to hunt out more information about some of the names and places you mention. You seem contented with your lot and that’s good to here. Maybe the mesmeric is working on you too now.Not time to give up just yet anyhow when there are so many new ears opening up to the tunes.
Saw the new dates posted. Maybe I’ll wait and see if Manchester or Liverpool or Cropredy are added before I make any plans.
I’m enjoying a good time at the moment writing some new songs. Don’t know where they come from sometimes but happy they do. Found my self writing of abandoned love in New York and the exodus of the talented youth from Ireland in the same night. The minor keys seem to suit my mood.
Anyhow, that’s enough of that.
Take care of yourself and yours and hopefully one day we’ll meet for a quick natter.
Frankie

hope your writing is going well…went up top of Sliabh Gullion today and got well aired for tonights caper….we hope that Manchester London and Liverpool, Glasgow and Edinburgh will be on the route next Autumn….thanks for responding to the chat
Thanks for the continuing emails Christy. I love hearing of your journeys.
You have probably already heard these, but I very much like the vibe and musicianship. Peace!

Frankie

Thanks for the continuing emails Christy. I love hearing of your journeys.
You have probably already heard these, but I very much like the vibe and musicianship. Peace!
