I’ve seen a lot of gigs at the Royal Concert Hall, some of the best of which have been your own, but I’ve never seen the stage lit up so beautifully, or the audience so captivated by the performance as happened last night.
I don’t know if you’re familiar with the Good Child Foundation Christy, but they were in town last night and it was a phenomenon! The charity are committed to providing an education for disabled and disadvantaged children in Thailand, and the connection with Celtic was established by the founder Paul Lennon who offered to work for free so that his son could have an education.
This video explains a bit more of the background, in case you don’t know it>
This was the children gearing up backstage – a lovely spontaneous rendition of “Tell me Ma”
Onto the stage, which they filled with beautiful melody and their joyful presence and exuberance.
Until, by the end, the whole place was rocking and you couldn’t help but share their infectious enthusiasm and happiness.
The song above has the additional resonance due to the lyric in tribute to volunteer teacher Raemonn Gormley, who was murdered last year at home, after having spent the summer dedicated to working with these amazing children.
Just a truly special evening. I know this is a bit “apropos of nothing”, but I thought you might enjoy some of the music and nobody could be unmoved by the story behind their journey here.
Christy's reply
thanks Susie…perhaps someone can assist you to get the video up here
So I guess the Carrickmacross gig is 3/4 ways there by now,,, just watching the RTE news… Bord Failte is promoting 2013 as the Year of the Gathering,,, we are all asked to support people to come to the Island,,,, to promote tourism,,, do our bit for for the economy etc ,etc,, So as this was your original idea in 2010…maybe 2013 will see The 4711ers Gathering Mark 2 ? I think the gaggle may be up for it,,,, what do ye think ? Le gach dea ghui. H
Christy's reply
splendid thought Hilary….it would be great to have another gathering…we will consider the possibilities…perhaps the 4711ers might get a discussion group going…it would be good to have some rough idea of the level of interest
Hi Christy. A few weeks ago Mike Harding emailed you a song of mine called “The July Barbers” about the guys who came over from County Mayo and Donegal to help with the harvest in theYorkshire Dales. Just wondered what you thought?
Regards
Andy.
Christy's reply
thanks Andy…I enjoyed your song, thank you for sharing it
Hi Christy I am looking forward to the gig on Saturday night in Carrickmacross. This will be the first time I will have seen you, however I am a huge fan! A couple of years ago I played in a Tribute band of yours of sorts, we were called the Christy Hoors and we played punk versions of your songs! The evidence is on youtube! Basically it was teens going mad to your music! However I am now playing music in newly established more serious band O’Hanlons Horsebox and we play Irish Trad/Folk with a bit of a kick up the ass and hopefully you will hear more of us in the future! But a shout out to O’Hanlons Horsebox on Saturday night would make our day!
Christy's reply
Sound Armagh Man, The Crusty Hoors had a notable new-age bog vibe to it but I think ye made a good move with O’Hanlons Horsebox. It rolls nicely around the teanga…the kick up in the arse is badly needed, the use of ass is not a good start..that and craic are two PC give aways ….Brendan Grace met a Garda last week with no saddle on his bike…hows the crack sez Brendan and got breathylysed for his curiousity….how can a band be new and established at the same time….its all very well getting more serious then the Crusty Hoors, but dont try and get too serious in the back of O’Hanlons Horsebox…you run the risk of losing your original Hoors followers in searching for more sophisticated listeners who very can turn out to be a bunch of posers and tossers and not worth a toasted fart to man nor beast…..I wish you all the very best with O’H’s H….give it socks, no holding back, ground hurling and heavy sledging all the way…
Like it says on the homepage The Rolling Wave radio programme on Sun on RTE radio 1 will feature songs and music from Ceolchroim Scoil Cheoil an Earraigh. Christy sang five songs that night,,,,,,, Gortatagort, St Brendans Voyage, Missing You , Two Connelleys le Breanndain O Beagloaoich and Lisdoonvarna I hope they share them all…. Best of luck in Carrickmacross… safe travelling all. H
Christy's reply
hard to believe its 3 months since…I have good memories of the night…it will be interesting to hear it on the wireless before Sean Óg Ó Ceallacháin. Hope all is well up in The Kingdom.

Hey Christy, A lot of Jameson, Powers, Bushmills, T’more Dew has flowed under the bridge since last we met, Newbridge “63, you and Micky Flynn made my life fucking misery there but I have been an ardent fan since you made your debut and being a forgiving soul have passed on my love of your music to my 4 kids and 8 grandkids. A belated happy 67th to you,I toasted your arse, you were the best thing that came out of the Bridge except when we strung the maids knickers and bra’s from the church steeple to the new light-pole on the Quad. I know you have had health issues in the past, I am a 6 and 7 year survivor of 2 different cancers, was in Adare Manor for a month last year, came back and had a heart-attack, 4 bagger bypass, shite, if I had any idea I was going to live this long, I would have taken better care of myself but all my surgeons say I have a super liver! As far as I’m concerned, it’s still under trial! It’s been 49 year’s but Oisin lived forever, Ireland Abu, E
The first thing I can remember is the 7th of May 1945, at the back of Donnelly’s Hollow, the night before Pa Conway drove the Roadstone lorry into the Seven Springs and St Brigid started rolling out the Tintawn across the Curragh of Kildare. Happy Days.
Christy, hope the birthday went well. You can’t beat a good film followed by a snackbox. Nearly always guarantees you a shift. Anyway, was watching that BBC doc on Cardinal Brady and I started listening to Joni Micthell again. I also threw Strange Ways onto my Ipod. Tried to get my head around it, I still haven’t grasped the hugeness of it. But I wrote a piece on it. With your kind permission I’d like to post the link here….
All feedback welcome….. Hope all is well on your side big man….
Christy's reply
good to hear from you Panch….with regard to your piece on Brady I would like to comment that Mr Brady has never represented me in Rome or anywhere else…the ring is still complete
Just arrived home after an amazing week in Ireland, two Christy and Declan gigs sandwiched by two John Spillane gigs, I hope I’ll be able to tell my Orcas from my Joxers.
Christy's reply
sound Brian, glad you had a good trip…you are mega in Derry
Christy, like others I would like to wish you a happy birthday for yesterday. I was at the gig in Derry on Saturday night with my girlfriend Jennifer and O.J who you mentioned and my own dog Ralph. Ralph particularly enjoyed the boyage as I sing it myself and would love to let you hear my recording of it some day but I can be shy like that. It was an absolutely wonderful night and an early birthday treat for me from Jennifer so I was well looked after. It was lovely to meet some of the 4711ers also who made us so welcome and who we enjoyed a little drink with after. I certainly can’t wait till I get to another gig and maybe have a few requests of my own for you that I didn’t get to hear on Saturday. God bless Christy and god bless the music.
THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR BIRTHDAY GREETINGS ON ALL DIFFERENT MEDIUMS…I EMBRACED ALL YOUR GOOD WISHES AND HAD A PERFECT DAY…WENT TO THE PICTURES WITH MY WIFE AND WE HAD A GRAND TIME

Fantastic archive of field recordings done in Ireland 1951-1953. I cannot do the blueline so maybe someone can assist: http://research.culturalequity.org/get-audio-ix.do?ix=session&id=IR51&idType=abbrev&sortBy=abc
Fantastic stuff on here – things from Brendan Behan I have never heard before, Neil O’Boyle fiddling, Kitty Gallagher singing. Magical.
Thanks for this
