Christy's reply
Thats a neat circuit you have there John…what about Slatterys of Bodyke where I once sat and listened to Martin Rochford…. and Minogues Hotel in Tulla where I heard Paddy Canny play ” The Graf Spee” ….tell us a bit about your own gigging John
Your story written on the Lock Hospital in your book One Voice, is pretty darn funny. Can you remember the marvelous news stories you heard on the broken radio? Would love to know since most “news” today is distinctly dreadful. And any of those songs you heard on your set list? 😉 Also, is Ireland on holiday in September and October? I’m checking the gig schedule…
Christy's reply
There will be some gigs in Sept and Oct….they are currently being prepared and will be announced very soon, Sept 28,29, Oct 12,13 are almost ready to go, there will be others too, if all goes well……….with regard to “One Voice”….I am away from my work room just now and do not have a copy to hand… not sure what I wrote but If I remember correctly the songs included ” Swingin Shepherd Blues” by Ella Fitzgerald “Cool Water” by Frankie Lane ” Sixteen Tons” by Tennessee Ernie Ford (Whallup Lar), “Lipstick on your Collar” by Connie Francis “Lonely Boy” by Paul Anka, “Jailhose Rock” and “Mess a Blues” by The Memphis Kid….all the stuff I was into at 15 before I saw the light and heard my calling….songs from my winkle pinker period, before the brylcreem slithered down the drainpipes to be replaced by the bawneen and crois…..”O Fare Thee Well my Lovely Dinah, A Thousand Times Adieu”
Christy, was just listening to Paul Brady singing Paddy’s Green Shamrock Shore. Is it one you would consider singing?
Christy's reply
Indeed I have considered it….along with Kilkelly and a thousand others, ….Paul does a superb job on PGSS…..in recent months I have considered and learned many songs before deciding not to proceed..its all part of a mysterious process, a process that has evolved..in my younger years I sang every song I learned and every verse I wrote…I no longer rush to perform…I actually enjoy the more lengthy process…Recently I struggled for months with two songs trying to get them in shape, when I gave up on them I did not consider the time wasted….sure beats languishing on the high stool, expanding and expounding
i dident hear about the premier ballrom being done up but i did hear lar corbet being a new music promoter had bressie performing in the premier ballroom last week and daniel o donnell and the black eyed peas are appearing there shortly did you ever play the lakeside hotel ballina co tipperary great part of the country just across the bridge from the banner county
Christy's reply
there used to be a venue there called Katie Dalys back in the disco years…it was on the Ballina side of the river, it was a tight little spot..I played there one sat night about 25 years ago and just about survived it…the best venue in those parts was The Merriman Tavern in Scariff run by Aiden and Síle O Beirne…played there dozens of times in the 70s both solo and with Planxty..heard The Bothy Band there and The Chieftains. I remember finishing a gig there one night and heading home we passed the hand ball alley near Ogonolloe…we faced the van into the alley and in the headlights played a game of handball at 3 in the morning…always remember seeing the bullet marks on the Bridge of Killaloe where they murdered “young McMahon and Rogers, brave Egan and Kildea”…(The Scariff Martyrs)
I was just listening to some music from Live at the Point 1994 and I spotted someone asked a question, what was the theme music/track you used when you were being introduced..it didnt bother me at first but now its driving me mad,so who better to ask than the man himself..
Regards
James 🙂
Christy's reply
this was a hard one…. had to go back 25 years to get the answer…I am reliably informed by Lar Flynn of Seville, Co.Spain that it was Celestial Soda Pop by Ray Lynch…first heard it on the juke box in the original Mother Hubbards where Barry made great sandwiches and played cool tunes
hi christy thanks for your reply about the maton guitars any gigs coming up in tipp i must go to one of your gigs soon its been well over a year since i saw yourself and declan in thurlas
Christy's reply
Im waiting for Deputy Michael Lowry and his cronies to open up their new entertainment complex. I trust its all coming together. It will be great day for Ireland when that opens. Massage parlours in Horse Boxes with Knights of Columbanus looking the other way. A pity Sinatra is not still around,it would be right up his alley………If all else fails we’ll have to hit The Ragg. Do they still play The Soldiers Song before the gigs? I hear The Premier Ballroom has been done up, …any reports

I learned Sigerson Clifford’s ” Barr na Sráide” from the singing of Mick Hipkiss. A great singer who used to run The Skillet Pot Folk Club in Birmingham in the late 80s Mick also had a group called Drowsy Maggie who recorded a number of albums
hi christy i was just wandering how the maton guitars are working for you i have an en20 tak myself but i am curious about the maton guitars is there a nice sound are they as good as the taks and do the music shops stock them in ireland
Christy's reply
I am very happy with my maton guitar…its a very personal thing, no two guitars sound or feel the same, they are stocked in The Guitar Shop, Exchequer St Dublin…the guys there are very helpful
Haven’t been around here in a while. Hope your well. Just wondering if you have ever sang, or thought about singing ‘Kilkelly’. Have been listening to Robbie O’Connell’s heartbreaking version, Definitely a song you could do justice
Christy's reply
did a lot of work on that song about 25 years ago but had to abandon it…I simply could not keep it together..I loved Mick Moloney’s version
Great to see the Solo gigs announced for the Button Factory in July. Should be very special concerts.
Conor and myself enjoyed the Nuremore gig on the Sat night , ye were flying !! Isn,t it fantastic to see young fellas like the 10 year old lad calling for a song like Continental Ceili. I’d say he was walking on air after the show.
Dunlewey is creeping up the gigs page too, we’re looking forward to the Mid – Summer evenings.
Christy's reply
Met that lad after the gig, he hung around outside til we were leaving…him and his folks were a pure pleasure to meet
Loved the recent gig in the forum, thanks for signing the canvas, well chuffed. Did you like it? Got a great pic of the night here http://i45.tinypic.com/x6iets.jpg (copy and paste link). Looking forward to your return in a few weeks.

Christy, was listening to the Box Set while typing this piece. Hence the Reagan reference. Got to thinking about how culture reflects the political climates…..
Hi Christy,
Just watched Finbar Furey programme from last night, and the thought struck me that what a Forty years of Music & Song we have had, with the likes of the Fureys, The Dubliners, The City Ramblers, and of course your good self and the extended ‘Family’.
Am i getting old or has the mold been thrown away?, Its my believe that our young people will not be able to look back in Forty years, like we have, and speak of the magic moments in all the magic venues, where we sang our cares away.
keep her lit.

we are all getting on a bit…the music is still out there but you’d need to be in prime of youth to find it….ours was of its time and still lives on but there are younger men and women making music now that will create its own memories…its all a continuum, the feckin sky pilots with, McQuade and Dev at whip, nearly destroyed what the forces of occupation left after them. Our music and song survived despite King and Pope….it thrives still and reverberates…Im only in from hearing a rake of tunes from Kevin Burke, Tim O’Brien, Dessie Donnelly, Mike McGolderick ,John Doyle and JohnJoe…as good a night of music as these old ears could wish for…..any crack in The Auld Sheebeen these times?…any sign of Ray Lynam, a great rhythm guitar player
Hello Christy just wanted to express my appreciation to you Christy and declan for two hours of magic. Hope to be there tonight to …. shine on Mary
