Martin Simpson was on fine form last night-playing an hour gig on Facebook.Lots of worldwide interest, but a few comments said that it was hard to access…it was a bit messy,so you and Andy have things well sussed with your sessions. If ok for you, long they may continue!
Having walked past my local shops ,seen the ‘social distance’ queues and noted my local ‘R’ rate,I’ve ordered the new Dylan LP via Amazon (needs must!)whilst I was on the site,I spotted a CD that’s new to me…Planxty ‘One night in Bremen’,It seems that it was recorded for German radio and featured a 5 piece lineup…any studio material from that era that might also see the light of day?
Have a good day-and evening,if you and Andy have a session planned.

Our set up is very basic…no microphones or lights…. just myself and Andy, an Atkin guitar,an iPhone and bunch of songs….nothing else gets in the way….sure thing , we know that the sound could be better, the lighting clearer, the set more theatrical but we need to keep it simple….its just two guys hangin out and having some time together….thanks for your feedback Dave….
Yes, that Planxty gig from Bremen landed a few years back…all I remember about the night is a Bodhrán bursting into flames ( much rejoicing in certain quarters !!!)
Thanks Christy!
Hope you’ll have another joyful night together with your son Andy.

Last nights session is now locked away in Andy’s phone….it did not run as smoothly as previous episodes…I had to abandon a number of songs as lyrics were eluding me…Andy will have more work to do on this week’s episode because of my stopping and starting, spluttering and farting, sneezing and sharting ( not quite ! ) I think I may have done 7 songs last night….
My husband and myself often came to see you regularly making a trip to Ireland to do so. In fact he was the proud owner of one of your plectrums. He died 4years ago and I was never able to listen to you after that, until lockdown, now I have your music playing most of the time it’s been quite cathartic, so many good memories, have cried while you sung Nancy Spain and laughed when you sing lisdoonvarna. Thanks for the therapy! Pam
Christy's reply
Some of my therapy comes from those who listen to the songs…Thank You Pam…Thank you for sharing…in a few lines you offer us a sense of your life, your love, your loss…I wish you well wherever you may be…
Dear Christy,
Thank you for wonderful lockdown session # 4!!! Loved your song collection and could listen again and again …
Fantastic to hear you sing and talk for 28 minutes this time and it’s a real joy for us to singing with you in front of the monitor (unfortunately no stage)!
Your sad story of cancelled gigs and listing the missed places made us thinking of your fabulous fellow musicians and your lovely crew – how are they keeping in these strange times?
Hopefully your idea about a set of Ewan MacColl’s songs will come true and I’m wondering if you’ll maybe include “The Travelling People”!? It’s such a beautiful one and came to my mind at the sight of Pecker Dunne’s great photo. Oh and “Sullivan’s John” would also be a treat! Hope I’m not too cheeky with requests.
Btw: We like Iggy B’s offer … a gig of yours in his garden and afterwards a bag of turf and a Brigid’s cross sounds marvellous!
Stay well and safe,
Traudel
All this talk of the Zimmerman prompts me to recommend his radio show – all three seasons and specials available on http://www.themetimeradio.com, It’s all there, hours of innocent and blameless diversion. He gives the Clancys a few shoutouts. It’s one thing to make an entrance, it’s another thing entirely to get out alive.
The new Dylan LP has an extensive review in http://www.hotpress.com written by Anne Margaret Daniel…a New York Prof and great analyst ,I first mentioned a few weeks back.I can’t get the paper copy of the mag,but the online version is the full piece, hopefully…
‘Rough and Rowdy Ways’is a great title…an understatement for my mood watching the shameful morons on the streets of London today…more and more,I despair…and am thankful for the brilliant music that reaches me.

Dear Christy,
This morning i heard a Scottish radio piece about the patenting of barbed wire ( yes i know, living on the edge here).
This happened in around 1870 in America. The interesting thing was that the Native Americans called it The Devil’s Rope.
This ,i suppose, was because the devil’s rope stopped their prairie herding, it prevented cultural roaming and it ring-fenced and stole all of the best pasture away from those who had used it for hundreds of years.
Well it got me thinking that great creators like your good self, or Wally Page or Easkey could write a song about ‘The Devil’s Rope’ , am sure Floyd Westerman would have approved.
There are lyrics firing round even my non musical head, and my elder daughter’s fav Disney film had a song loosely on the subject
‘You think you own whatever land you land on, the earth is just a dead thing you can own…’
Just a thought.
Take care
Rory

Hello Christy,
What a treat those lockdown sessions! Bob Dylan for starters!
Thank you soo much, you have no idea what it means to see you singing.
When I was younger my father didn’t understand why I was going to gigs, so much money for something you could also hear on vinyl.
He missed a lot in his live!
I miss the singing of the audience and I’m always waiting for the applause at the end of every song. I can imagine you must miss that too.
I never have special requests but for once I would like you to ask if you could play BBR for Hilary, I know its one of her favorites and without her I would miss a lot.
Hope to see you and the rest of the country soon.
Keep safe and thanks again.

In my Father’s time there were no gigs..
But he could sing

Sometimes I dream of singing with him…..
Morning Christy just to let you know that as soon as you can travel west you’re welcome to do a gig at my house I ‘ll set you up in the back lawn the seats can be 2 metres apart any one that can’t fit In the garden we ‘ll put them out in the long meadow we ‘ll keep it low key we’ll serve tea and sandwiches and apple tart I was thinking 5 euro to get In 50 to get out but everyone will get a bag of turf a bag of timber and a St Brigid s cross well it’s just a thought
Thanks for another great lockdown session and great to hear you’re going recording

I was blown away by Lisa O’Neill’s NCH solo youtube gig last night…so charismatic /in such a wonderful venue.Singing as she walked from stalls to stage, where she’d set up lounge furniture, and her instruments-she chatted and sang.Fair play…definitely, hard to describe…the bonus was an Ivor Cutler song and harmonium…lovely stuff ,and back to the Peel/BBC years…

I’m on the verge of recording…since 1968 I’ve never entered a recording studio alone…perhaps the time has come….no producer, no side kick, no shoulder to lean on…watch this space (to be contd Page 94)
Thanks to you and your family for this beautiful new session! Your choice of songs is just grand again!!! Like Thomas before described it perfectly right: feels like a private concert for every one of us.
Here in Germany luckily many things look kind of normal again. Even small concerts are allowed again as long as the audience keeps the minimum distance of 1.5m to each other. But that destroys the atmosphere and makes it hard/impossible for the artists to earn money if only a small percentage of seats can be used. So unfortunately still a long way to go :-(. But at least signs of hope that the numbers are still low in spite of many restrictions being relaxed now. Nevertheless I hope you keep on with your sessions (until you can come to Germany for some live gigs )
Stay safe!

Big thank you also to Andy and Juno for their great work with production and distribution. It’s clear that there are thousands of people like me who look forward so much to your weekly sessions and the boost they always give us. It’s marvellous to see just how much you are also enjoying performing the sessions and the great rapport between yourself and Andy adds so much to the hugely positive vibe.
