Thank you @Rory for this brilliant idea of a “guestbook gig” and thank you @Pat for your offer to put everything together. I think the result might be a good way to say thank you to Christy for all the fun and inspiration we had and have with his songs/concerts and I hope that he will have some fun as well with the “performance”.
Hi Christy,
Just an update for all those interested in the 4711ers virtual gig.
Pat is gathering all contributions no matter how professional or ,like mine ,unprofessional.
Tuneful or ,like mine, tuneless.
Please pass on the idea to anyone who fancies it, and i know that several have taken up the cudgels, which is frankly fantastic.
Spread the word to the quare fella in USA, to the quare lady next door shovelling snow, to the quokka in australia, the queen of aragon and the quisling in the armed forces …all and any contributions however long and however sounding are welcome.
I reckon it would be good to get them all in by sunday night for Pat to work on and we will see how things pan out after that.
The cd launch is live on Ian Dempsey’s Today fm prog, then there is a world live premiere on the late late show ,and our first sell out concert is in the back room of the Waverley Bar, High street , Hawick before we headline at the mudfest in my parents’ back field (with support from Rhianna , The Who , Daniel O’Donnell and Suzi Quattro).
Thanks for being the inspiration Christy, i hope you can twist a few family arms to chuck in their ha’pence worth.
Rory
In recent times, I’ve been listening to a heap of Joni Mitchell recordings ,across the decades of her wonderful career. I first heard her in the late 60s and fhave ollowed her paths with interest.
http://www.jonimitchell.com is a superb resource for her music, art and numerous related articles – a true artist and one whose stories are brought to life in such varied ways. The essence is acoustic, but orchestral arrangements flourish along with jazz.Lots of points related to Rebecca’s post about ‘listening’…
Following the tragic Tuam findings, I returned to your take on Joni’s ‘ Magdalene Laundries’ – captured brilliantly, and close to home,on youtube from your 2014 Bridgewater gig. Wonderful…
Back to the 60s now and hoping that all is well with all.
Hello Christy,
When I was 16 the music teacher sat us all down and played recordings to us. Then we had to answer questions on what we heard. It was only later that I realised I was being taught how to listen. I’m still grateful for it.
I’m useless at casual listening, you’ve either got all of me or I’m filtering it out.
I love picking out strands of songs and musicians when they are played. Wondering why things happened that way that time and enjoying the infinite possibilities.
Listening is a wonderful thing.
Rebecca

When I was 16 I heard an oboe concerto played by Evelyn Rothwell…
Just listening to “ where I come from “ for the umpteenth time, and I have only just noticed the honourable mention of Mick, Declan , Dave and other crew on Lisdoonvarna. Got me to thinking isn’t it amazing what we think we heard…. or didn’t for that matter!!!!!. Now I’m wondering what else I have missed on other Songs. Promise to listen more attentively in Future 😁. “Listen to the whisper of moonlight on the Water”.
Best regards.

Dikon ‘s at the Black & Decker hammer & thongs
while Declan’s doin covers of The Grateful Dead
I be divin for the crack on the old Sheep’s Head”
Hi Christy,
Will have a go! Rebecca, your Yorkshire twang was great, my husband was from Yorkshire so we long ago got rid of any animosity!!
Can’t sing, will try and read something out it’s hard to be poetic when you sound like Victoria Wood. Also will have to master the technology. Cheers all. Pam
Hello Christy,
I’m onto it. Videos of some of my favourite verses will be zipping through the ether to Pat.
I’m hoping we’ll get some spoken verse. The other day, when I phoned Pam to help her with something she said, “You have a voice.”. It was lovely to hear that Lancashire birr. She didn’t say what my Yorkshire twang sounded like.
So I’d love to hear some of the voices that populate this place.
Rory’s bunker is a fine source of energy – spreading far and wide for the virtual gig…
I have limited tech and a heavy cold, but thought of a video from 2018 ,featuring my partner in crime and me playing some songs – so that’s been zapped to meastro Pat – for inclusion in the gig – Pat’s the man to know the hook up from Vimeo to mp4 – alien to me,for sure.
Really looking forward to seeing the Palace of Varieties to raise our spirits.
Keep well all
Dave

Hi Christy,
Excitement mounts,
We are under starter’s orders, Michael O’ Hehir is in the commentary box, girth straps tightened, goggles down, heart thumping, 3 open ditches and 7 laurel hedges , 2 banks and a stone wall in front of us but instead of Punchestown we are ready for the virtual piecemeal gig to be recorded.
Pat is the Dread at the controls, Rebeccah and Dave ( and i hope many more) are practicing already, the idea’s endorsement has been given (without a few puffs of white smoke) and gig is in production.
Anyone, and i mean anyone, can send Pat a short video….so sign up folks just by starting your phone’s video and speak, sing, play, strum a few short lines of your favourite CM song, into the record button of history.
Here we go on the way out whacky races.
Rory.

Christy, a chara,
I was saddened to hear of the rescheduling of the live stream but delighted to finally get round to watching the Vision at Vicar St show. It was heartening to see yourself and Andy as well as Lisa O’Neill and Lankum performing greatly on the famous stage. I’ve been watching ‘The Tommy Tiernan Show’ this last couple of years hoping that you’d appear on it and was glad to see the pair of you having a yarn!
This oul Covid is dragging on a bit but the songs would shorten any day. I hope the head and heart are healthy and with a bit of luck we’ll be seeing you in the flesh up on some stage near to us all in the not too distant future! On a side note, did you ever perform Easy and Slow by Dominic Behan? It’s been in my head this past week or so and I’ve been singing and strumming it about the house ’til my heart’s content!
Beir bua agus beannacht!

I thought it best to give Tommy’s show a miss….a fellow could end up givin him a box….him being a younger man an auld fellow could end up the worse for it, my Navan connections tell me that he’s a hardy buck…..but he was grand at the Vision….his very long questions make for easy short answers…like “the same as that Tommy” or “tis true for you Tommy” or better still”I think I’ll sit this one out “

Hi Christy
Your reply to my son Tom’s “turn that bloody row down” lit me up on a gloomy day, something you’ve often done this past 30 years. Glad to return the favour. He’s still not sorry, so we plan to extract revenge on your behalf by introducing the grandbabies to such delights as Joxer and Lisdoonvarna!
I’m finding robust humour helps these days. Howled with delight last night over some Billy Connolly classics (Agnes….!) but Yorkshireman Peter Kay and Geordie lass Sarah Millican also have the ability to hold slightly warped mirrors up to life. Recommend them.
Been sorting my scribblings out and came across one from 20-odd years ago which I heard you singing one cold November night in a vivid dream. Might interest you – does the old Dublin PO box still work?
Shame about the gig, but I was expecting it. As well as “Aengus”, how about including the wonderful “Green Island” in the next one?
Keep yer pecker up, kid. We’ve got your back and the more “bloody row” you make, the better as far as we’re concerned. Will’s giant TV is already booked for May 1st. Hugs xx
PS, I remember Traveller, too. I’d sent you a poem called May Nights and received a cassette of Traveller as thanks. Much appreciated. Bxx
Christy's reply
I heard somewhere that Green Island was the last song that Ewan wrote…..
Great news fellow 4711ers.
I am gargling with Hawick Distillery Gin to improve the vocal chords, the make up artist has been booked from Billy Smart’s circus to give me a virtual makeover, and i am soon to be ready to go Pat.
Rebecca you do as many as you want !
Choc ices have been bought and are currently not needing to be placed in a freezer due to prevailing weather conditions.

Hello Christy,
When I work from home I’m in a room right next to the garden. This morning there are birds everywhere. I’m watching one little tree. It’s got long tailed tits all over it. So many I can’t count them. I’ve no idea what they eat but there’s a lot of it in that little tree. They are all so busy.

Oh goody, I’m up for this. My problem will be limiting it to one verse. I’ve already got eight of them in mind.
I’ve had a play with my phone to try and work out how to do it.
If you record a video of yourself, the video is automatically an mp4. Then go to where your pictures are stored, probably called the gallery, choose the video, hit Share, and it should let you choose email. The video will stick itself to the email and you’re good to go.
Does this help anyone or am I making it worse?

“At 7pm your local times we could each record one verse of each 4711ers own fav CM song ….whether sung, spoken or played in a virtual round the world CM gig?”
Now if anyone fancies it, record your contribution as an MP4 (ask your computer what that is). Email it to me, patdarcyis@gmail.com, and my mate Stefan will give me a hand to stitch them together. He does that all the time with his band Larún, well worth a wee listen by the way.
Christy, I have watched yourself and Andy on/in Vicar St about 10 times. Apart from the great quality, and buzz of the gig, I was really moved by what I saw as a great tenderness, caring and love from father to son, and from son to father. It looked to me as if both of you were holding each other in the palm of the hand. Beautiful.

Andy has been listening to the songs for manys the long year….its a lovely thing, singing with him…we hope to do a bit more ..thanks for your feedback
Dear Christy, why don’t WE , your band of less tuneful troubadors, hold a virtual concert on saturday night?
Easkey and Dave, Rebecca , CS (16) and you clearly have the musical nouse and am sure more do too.
Recitings from Marty’s dulcit Donegal tones, some German lilt, Kerry laughter, Wicklow calling, Belgian brogue, Borders rasp, Japanese whisper …and so it goes in a never ending spiral of sounds from anyone who fancies it .

The only trouble is we would need a techno guru to recieve all the videos/recordings and strap them together, into a gig of a dozen or more different verses from different songs.
Whilst you with your nokia and me with my fat fingers shelter from the computer a whizz kid is needed to put them together…anyone know anyone?
Are any lads and lassies up for a bit of a gig on saturday? Come on let us lift the gloom, and by the way…anyone for the last few choc ices?
