Back from the first city centre trip of the year and first hair cut!
Wandering quiet, sunny streets with the newly acquired ‘ First Time Ever’ – Peggy Seeger story.in my bag. Such a good start to it that I nearly missed my tram stop awhile later. It reminded me of a half century ago and the 40s bus routes to South Manchester. One day I had ‘Prosperous’ in a Rare Records bag…dashed it home for its first spin and the start of a brilliant journey…
I hope your day is going well.

a tiny paper cut on my right thumb has me consternated…precisely on the point where skin caresses string….with a gig fast approaching I’m beside myself with apprehension….
Hello Christy,
I love words.
Lying while sitting
Telling the truth while lying
Lying while lying
I can’t help smiling at the flexibility of it all.
There was an article in April’s Living Tradition magazine about Robin Hood Ballads.
There’s a tale round here that Robin Hood is buried at Kirklees Hall, the tale is old, 1450 I think.
Kirklees Hall is about 2 miles from here. It’s near junction 25 of the m62.
There’s a feel about that place as you drive between brighouse and the motorway. It always puts Robin Hood in my head. My romantic heart would like to think it could be true.
I’m waiting for vol 1 of Childs Popular songs of England and Scotland. I’m hoping to read more and maybe sing about it.

that Robin Hood was a quare hawk, poor Maid Marian must have been constantly exhausted trying to keep up with him…a bit like our Finn McCool (Fionn Mac Cumhaill)…or (God Forbid) even St Patrick herself…theres hardly a parish on the entire Island without a St Patrick’s Well..
“one hundred thousand reptiles blue he charmed with sweet discourses
dined on them in Killaloe in soups and second courses.
Where blind worms crawling in the grass disgusted all the nation
down to Hell, with a Holy spell, he changed their situation” (Zozimus)
Christy i assume you can now retire on that wad of used fivers that is now propping up your bed, after The Ferry Master stormed to 4th and an each way pay out in the Scotiish Grand National yesterday at a generous 20/1.
Meanwhile back in the land of the pauper ( i don’t bet) it is time for a wee play of Derby Day before the first client rolls up in 10 mins.

I missed the boat again Rory…..good information generously shared….fair play to you….obsessively immersed in work here….
May !st coming down the line rapid…
Many thanks to Lizzy for the peregrine news (I thought of them recently, and was going to check this year)…in the 2020 lockdown/doom and gloom, it was very special to follow the Berkeley falcons from thousands of miles away.I’m in again this year and will be rooting for ‘the kids’, especially when they fledge from the high tower!
That’s me set for a rerun of Richard Farina music…always welcome.
Have a good day ,Christy – I hope the balladfest is going well for you/ us.
Christy, I hope you are well. I haven’t been on here in a while but have been reading the posts. This link is really for Dagrab (Dave) since he took an interest last year. The same pair of peregrines, Annie and Grinnell, on the Berkeley campus laid four eggs this year and the first two hatched yesterday. The link shows the two babies having their first feed, and it is so cute The last egg was laid on St.Patrick’s Day, so little Paddy should appear any day now. You can access the live feed by entering Cal Falcons webcam.
Hello Christy,
You know what, that sounds like a perfect Friday evening. I used to love Rogan Josh. Now it’s sag paneer and chickpea bhuna.
I’ve been trying to find words for the Saturday morning thing. I can’t do any better than
For it is a holy thing
And it is a precious time
And it it is the only way
Sometimes when I’m trying to practise I realise I’ve been staring into space for an unknown length of time. I’d like to say I’ was working with my imagination, but I’d probably be lying.
Rebecca

our imaginations are working away all the time, lying or standing, floating or diving, talking or walking…beavering away goodo, morning noon and night, never a moments rest
If you fancy a smile on a sunny day, check out Peggy Seeger on youtube – ‘Gotta get home by midnight’… nice photos too and some ace guitar’…I’d no idea she played with such precision. Fair play – long may she run…
Have a good day

What a Woman is Peggy Seeger….she continues to inspire, 53 years since I first heard her sing…her new album is beautiful
Sometimes, bad news hits from nowhere. For the last few days, I’ve been enjoying ‘Heart’s Desire’ by Niamh Parsons – plucked at random from my ‘not played in ages – need a spin’ CD pile.
Niamh’s superb singing and the arrangements led me to the sleeve notes for more details. The booklet has several excellent sketches of the artists. Always keen to follow up a new visual artist, I checked the name and looked her up.Then sadness hit as I read tributes and the account of Gwen Sale’s death. http://www.gwensale.com is a great memorial. I’m glad to have found her work and send belated condolences to her loved ones and all who knew her. She sounds wonderful.
An update on Dylan’s 80th… the latest ‘Uncut’ magazine has fascinating interviews with Dylan associates, over the decades + a CD stuck to the mag’s cover…inc an unreleased song by the maestro, from the ‘Infidels’ era, as well as 14 Dylan songs covered by other people… the pick of the bunch, so far (and one for Rory and Flora)Richard Thompson’s ‘ This wheel’s on fire’…
Enjoy the sun – hopefully, hitting the Tak, like the cover of ‘Nashville Skyline…
I’m revisiting your 2020 lockdown sessions again – wow, they’re good.
Dave

I have unopened Uncuts, unheard Bonus CDs, I need to re-think my leisure pursuits….I’d jettison the TV if it was’nt for Drew Pritchard and Judge Judy….any more Fiona Bruce and jettison I will…does that woman ever go home…that said,we too have a few Nuala Ní Onagains
Hi Christy,
‘Arrivals’ arrived this week. She spins beside me, an unsurprisingly beautiful album from Declan O’Rourke.
Paul weller produced it and plays on it, so next time up i think perhaps a guest appearance from Johnny O’Rotten on your follow up record?
Regards
Rory
Thanks for the musical suggestions folks, and the good wishes.
Good luck on your trek Rory & Flora, it makes me saddle sore just thinking about it. How about Bicycle Race by Queen, The Push Bike Song by Mungo Jerry &You Can Ring My Bell by Anita Ward to help speed you on your way?
109 years today since The Titanic sank. There’s an amazing BBC archive interview with Frank Prentice, who was an Asst Pursar in his 20s. He went on to live a long life. I’ll re watch it later. Gripping stuff …D
Hello Christy,
I hope the tak taming is going well. They sound beautiful on the stage, big and bright and well defined.
I’ve got a picture in my head of a man brandishing a chair while a wild looking guitar prowls around.
Steve’s cello has turned out to be a similar beast. The noise is massive. If there was a big enough hole in it I’d be tempted to stick a pillow inside like I used to do with my bass drum. That would be the end of that collaboration, I suspect.
I’m listening to Chris Wood’s The Lark Descending album. It feels like home.
The very best of luck to Rory and Flora in their cycling adventure. I’ve no idea about a soundtrack. Whenever groups of cyclists come past here they never stop talking.
Chris Wood’s album made me think of this. No idea why but maybe it’s something to do with time? The music stops after the first minute. https://youtu.be/QlEkjPsDgHY
Fair play to Flora and Rory. Good luck and hope the weather is fair…Luka’s ‘Acoustic Motorbike’ has to be on the playlist and if rhythm is needed – Kraftwerk’s ‘Tour de France’. For the cyclists’ sakes, I hope the coast to coast doesn’t feel like the Tour de France… it would for me!
Dear Christy,
Firstly apologies for hijacking this chat for the following…
On Saturday my younger daughter Flora and i cycle Coast to Coast ( Gretna to Berwick) in aid of
Mental Health uk
Meningitis Research foundation
Trussell Trust Foodbanks
Show Racism the Red Card
Anyone looking for info on the history filled route ,or sponsoring detail ,look under Virgin Money Giving website Under the name Flora Bannerman.
Secondly any suggestions for songs to listen to on route folks?
Thanks Rory
Ps Thirdly our nag The Ferry Master runs in the Scottish Grand National on sunday, sadly Rachael not available, but still worth an each way interest folks.
Nat Joesph’s loss was your/ Bill Leader’s gain. If there was only one Prosperous photo – it’s a terrific one. Always makes me smile – for the memories of great times as well as terrific music- and much more to follow…
Great that recording ‘Prosperous’ was such an enjoyable process for you, especially after saying you felt a bit detached from ‘Paddy on the road’,sessions in London.
The gathering of musicians in Prosperous must have been a buzz in itself. And, as you’ve always pointed out, Bill Leader’s role was crucial. Is it possible to say if the idea to form Planxty came about during the recordings or soon after? Not sure if I’ve ever seen any, but are there any photos of the Prosperous sessions?
Thinking of the schedules of all involved, presumably the LP was recorded quite quickly, with Bill mastering the recording afterwards. It’s a real gem and special for me as I’ve been playing it regularly for decades, having found it soon after it was released.
Fair play to all who embarked on the good ship Planxty and apt that Mr Leader is always ‘mentioned in despatches’.
Have a good day.

If I remember correctly, towards the end of the recording we realised how enjoyable it had been and talked about coming together again…that took about 18 months….I came home from England, Liam from America, Andy from Baneasa’s Green Glade and Donal from the Band he was in at the time….
far as I know the only photo of the session is on the sleeve of “Prosperous”…it was taken by Dave Bland who assisted Bill and also played Concertina….
3 years earlier I’d done an audition for Transatlantic Records with Bill Leader..fortunately it failed ! ..when Bill started his own label he agreed to come to Ireland and record the sounds that were in my head….
Am reminded of a story of me coming home complete with a just acquired Planxty tape. Into my tape deck…and what happened next?
