Well said about the relief of the vaccine – amazing research/development, altruism by many good people…
Just received a second hand copy of ‘Words and Music’ – an unexpected pink and blue ‘ Shanachie Records’ cover – ace music… Liam flying out of the blocks is a wonderful start to any album…’Lord Baker’ and ‘Immigrant…’beyond compare… (as is the latter on your 2020 lockdown episode).
That’s brightened the day… D
Christy's reply
never saw that sleeve….Shanachie ..a law unto themselves….are you describing “Words & Music” by Planxty on Shanachie label..that would certainly be interesting
Heading to Dylan’s 80th – http://www.expectingrain.com is hitting top form. Great stories from around the world and easy to navigate – for the current date/archives. As so often with Dylan, there are fascinating detours – including several pieces about his links with Ireland/Clancys et al.
Great reading on a Wintery May day.
The 2nd jab will be fine, Rebecca – I’d be worried if, by now, I’d changed politics, football team support, music etc – but no signs – phew…
Hello Christy and All,
I’ve got the date for my second jab. 15th June. I’m so looking forward to it. I react badly to vaccinations and this will be astra zeneca, but it’s such an important thing to do. I feel very lucky to be offered it.
Rebecca
Christy's reply
always good to hear positivity and gratitude …
the naysayers , conspiracy theorists and scare mongers get far too much exposure….
like you, I feel fortunate to have my vaccinations
Please can the planners add Manchester to the never ending tour schedule ?…you’ll be ready for the ‘M’ spots in about 6 months!
I’ve just played ‘The wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald’- Lightfoot’s arrangement is mighty – did anyone come up with the name of the Irish tune that he used for it?
Dave
Christy's reply
the way I heard it……in an interview someone asked Gordon what did he think of an Irish Republican using his melody in an Irish rebel song….Gordon reportedly replied that it always sounded like an old Irish tune to him…..
Knocknagoshel sounds good…
Or knock airport , or Lisdoon or anywhere….
Hope springs eternal.
Christy's reply
I have it…Knock, Knocknagoshel, Knockliscrane,Knocktopher, Knockranny,Knocknacarra and Knockbeg….then we can move on to Lyracrompane,Lispole and Lyrath
I’ve informed the planners and backroom team…
Hi C. At this rate I feel, if requested, that the big K would nearly agree to sponsor this website !! When you asked about getting a gig in Knock I presume you are referring to the independent village of Knocknagoshel ? Can you believe it will be 8 years in July since you played the Community Centre there in glorious sunshine ? Mick swears he still has some apple tarts in the freezer ! I was thinking it would be a good place to do a few warm up gigs for the never ending tour ?Just say the word and we will start working on the logistics, they still use the same traffic management plan. In the meantime here is the song started in Fitzgeralds in Brandon, in honour of the Kerry saint on his feast day https://youtu.be/ZbWPMnWaA2U Beir bua agus beannacht. H
Christy's reply
I’ve not heard that for yonks..great to hear Liam and Andy riffin on the outro…thanks for the reminder
Hi C. In a time when fake news is so current and fake twitter accounts so topical, how appropriate and relevant that you should quote Scallcrows !! Fair play. This is my favorite version from that great CD “This is the Day ” https://youtu.be/uwOKXYkpWYk A very mellow rendition yet a very clear missive. You have often said that its easier to get a message across gently rather than in anger or by shouting or words to that effect. On a lighter note today is the feast day of St Brendan The Navigator and a friend just texted to say that the PP in St Brendan’s Church here in Tra Li opened his sermon with the first few lines of your song !! You,’ve been named, but not shamed from the altar !! beir bua agus beannacht. H
Christy's reply
that bates all H….we never know where the songs are going to surface….did he sing the lines?..was he wearing the full rig out? will I gain any plenary indulgences from this generous rendition ? might I get a gig in Knock ? was it before or after the collection? was there a good crowd in ?
TG we have the GAA back..all we need now is a few gigs
Brilliant poem in reply to John – I’d love to know more about it – spot on, esp for the ‘News of the screws’ and similar rags..
Good on Declan – conduit to fine songs and guitarist par excellence – love the gig playing and squinting at his fingers via youtube clips!
A fascinating programme on BBC 4 tv tonight – a new doc on Delia Derbyshire – genius electronic music guru (most famously, iconic Dr Who theme tune). Should be an absorbing watch…
Have a good day
Dave
Christy's reply
saw that doc a while back…fascinating story…highly recommended
A wonderful song by Natalie Merchant – you get to the core of it Christy. D
Christy's reply
Thanks Dave…..It has been one of life’s great priviliges..having access to songs from around the world….hearing, studyling, learning and then singing songs from hundreds of songwriters, many of whom I’ll never meet….it began in childhood…. the first song I ever sang publicly was written by Peader Kearney….the second by Thomas Moore….in early times all my repertoire was gleaned from books, then LPs, then other singers, then living writers…..finally I began writing a few songs myself….at the moment.I cant recall how Motherland came my way…but Declan Sinnott did point me towards some great songs ….
Rory,
the sickening thing is how its being covered by our right wing media. The BBC originally reported ‘seven Palestinians killed in air strike’, leading you to think the casualties were militants, no mention at the time that most were innocent children. The current headline on the BBC website isn’t about the bombing of a refugee camp but the destruction of a Gaza tower block housing the foreign Media (no casualties reported).
Christy's reply
Sunday morning , page to fill
gather grist to grind your mill
Seek a pot to dip your quill
Sacrifice all candour
Your pointed beaks as sharp as knives
tearing strips off peoples lives
Buzzing like bluebottle flies
Among the dead and wounded
Dear Christy,
I just do not understand it, i have tried all day but i do not.
14 people kileed in a refugee camp, a refugee !!! Camp…taking refuge.
4 children killed in a house of 7 and yet it is a carbuncle ,an add on ,to the stilted news.
My cousin was Jewish, her children and husband are,but i am deeply saddened by this wanton slaughter.
I treasure Yellow Triangle as probably my favourite song of yours.
i was enormously moved by December 1942, the new song .
Can music make sense of life? I am listening to Leave a Light by Glen Hansard just to lose my thoughts in beauty and softness to try to dissolve the news.
I had resolved to watch the film The Camino Voyage tonight and probably still will, but i wish they would stop the bombing of innocents. The poor innocent children and refugees have a need of your own song Voyage now.
Ramblings, sorry.
Rory
Christy's reply
your heartfelt descriptions of pain and suffering are far from “ramblings” Rory…many of us have Jewish relatives and connections…this should never compromise our abhorrence of wanton slaughter …..
I can understand your retreat into the beauty of Glen’s song…our powerlessness can bring on feelings of futility…there is little we can do….all we can do is do those little things as best we can….then do big things when opportunity presents
Waiting in the jab queue – next to a plaque marking the building being opened in 1947 as an ‘old folks club’…if any of us are back in an ‘old folk club’ as a result of vaccines, happy days!
Dylan playing now and coffee tasting ok…might get some cereal soon, so no known side effects…
All the best all
Dave
Christy's reply
stay well away from choc-puffs…them hoors’ll have you without a tooth left in your head…I got all mine in and out in the one day….dentist told me “your teeth are perfect but your gums will have to come out”…..then he gave me a jab in my odyssey….
and just because you got your second jab, dont be filling up the diary ..easy does it
Dear Christy, when I was a young fella I always had Sugar Puffs or Corn Flakes for my breakfast, as I approached middle age I changed to Weetabix or maybe Albran
Now as I get older I find I prefer a nice bowl of warm Porridge or maybe Musle, I was wondering whats your favourite?
John (a cereal poster)
Christy's reply
about once a month we assemble a bucket of muesli….a bowl a day keeps the bowel at play…( cerealiously)…( surrealioriously)
on the road I might risk an occasional cocktail of Weetabix,BranFlakes and Cornflakes with a modicum of (over-sweetened) Alpen on the side…the sheer amount packaging, plastic and cardboard, can be very off-putting…. but with ice cold milk it makes for a good crackling crunchy start to the day before we head off down the road to the next location to try and do it allover again…
writing this I’m reminded of life on the road…band and crew all pulling together to make those two hours special for all concerned..it could be De Barras or The Point, Barrowland or Royal Festival Hall…arriving in for the Sound Check, checkin in to the chuck wagon, catchin up on the Goss, individual sound checks followed by band clatter…we’ve always had good soundchecks unless some one of us is a bit on the dark side…Biko Drum, Blackjack County Jail, Metropolitan Avenue, Dark End of The Street, The Rock are often sound checked but seldom gigged
Mary has a more interesting jab location than where I’m heading now… as a lifelong Leonard Cohen, I regret never seeing him – but several friends would probably prefer a jab than listen to the great man – the philistines!
If my next post contradicts all previous ramblings and affiliations, then the vaccine really is the devil’s work…
Got my second jab in the SSE Arena (previously the Odyssey) last night. One of my the last visits there was to see Leonard Cohen. Hallelujah to both visits!
