Hi C. Speaking of back referenced songs, I love Sweet Music Roll on from the Ordinary Man Album, imagine 1985 ? it’s great to see so many of those songs still in the repertoire. I spent many happy days with friends in the Strawberry Beds and nights in the Wren’s Nest back in the 80s, they had very relaxed music sessions. Again I checked both the Lyrics section and One Voice, well the song certainly has huge resonance for you. I think it is charming, atmospheric and captures a moment in time ” my darling man” is such a sweet phrase and kinda nostalgic, from a bygone era. Interesting to read about the writers Tom McGuinness/Hughie Flint or is it Graham Lyle ? and joined by Enya !! https://youtu.be/leU9uiNwd1A Beir bua agus beannacht. H

Hughie Flint contacted me in the early 80s suggesting I listen to this song…I enjoyed recording it…tried it a few times at gigs but it never worked….the late Arty McGlynn played guitar on this album… Art spent his life immersed in Irish Music playing with artists as diverse as Liam Óg O Flynn and Van Morrison..every where he played he left his indelible mark…simply, He was a wonderful Musician….after a life of accompanying, arranging, producing he finally produced a solo album called “Botera”…the last time I saw Arty was at a Liam O’Flynn tribute when his wife, Nollaig Casey gifted me a copy of this beautiful album….
I have great memories of working the “Ordinary Man ” album with Arty

Hello Christy,
I was reading All for the Roses yesterday too. It looks like you set us all off.
I love the opening of Knock. The humour and sweet randomness draws us in,
At the, early age of 38 me mother said, Go west
Get up, sez she, and get a job. Sez I, I’ll do me best
I pulled on me wellingtons to march to Kiltimagh
But I took a wrong turn at Charlestown and ended up in Knock
I’ve a suggestion, I hope you don’t mind. I wonder if you should do a few more Shane McGowan songs. The time is more right than ever, and I’d love to see what happens when all your years of experience, story telling brilliance, gentleness and snapping bite get together with his raw humanity.
Also, you’d get the opportunity to call it Whiskey and Barbed Wire, or Harpic the Nine Tailed Cat. It’s a strange God who has such a thing about barbed wire.
I’m sorry, it’s a serious suggestion, I just can’t help playing the fool.
I love singing Lullaby of London. He’s a devil to learn the tunes from though.
Watching the murmurations through the Piccadily twilight was one of the best bits of livivg in Manchester.
Great that Rory’s musings led him to a fantastic song. Probably, the first time I was made aware of Pierce Turner’s talents on hearing about wandering the Wicklow Hills..
From the same era of your back catalogue, there’s a phenomenal song that’s (sadly) never far from my mind. The powerful lyrics of ‘All for the roses’ have timeless impact. Your version always hitting home…music that makes us think, as well as keeping spirits high.
Hi Christy,
Yesterday i was stuck in a 4 and a half hour traffic jam , the M6 closed and so the slowest of snakes crawled along the A6 and through Shap and other long bypassed slumbering, damp, villages..
I phoned my wife to say i would be very late, bemoaning my fate until she advised that 2 poor souls had died on the motorway hours earlier, so i shut up moaning.
As i watched a huge murmuratioon of starlings from my stationary car near Hackthorpe i mused over songs.
At times from the cumbrian farmlands , as we stalled and stuttered past,i could see the M6 nearby quiet and danger-less for now ,and hummed Among The Wicklow Hills thinking of the Farm Dog loose on the motorway.
Such a lovely song.
…..takes more imagination…

As a lad in Maryborough Central Victoria (named by Commissioner Daly after Portlaoise’s former British imposed moniker), Sat arvo was Audie, Randolph Scott etc at the pictures then run down to the footy oval to catch the last quarter of the the mighty ‘Borough for free. After a submarine movie we all raced down the alley way sounding off like a sub dive signal : “whoop! whoop”, echoing impressively in the lane.
Dad had educated us to remain seated when they played “God Save The Queen” before the films.
Different lands, same experiences sometimes …
Christy, I love “Clock” song – to me, as heartfelt & true as Neil Young’s “Who’s Gonna Stand Up & Save the Earth”.
Long may you ruffle establishment’s feathers whilst educating & entertaining us.
A bit of history in Conleth`s yesterday, beating Dublin for the first time in 22 years, with seven Newbridge togging out. It will all be over in Aug`, and the dream might come true for us Lillies.

Hi to herself from the Back-of-The-Barracks
Hello Christy and All,
That was a weird rugby match yesterday. Poor old Italy losing their hooker, I wonder if it was a broken wrist, then getting the second hooker sent off. I was bamboozled by the law thing and it really took the shine off for me. I love the scrum. Anyway, a great win amid a weird set of circumstances.
I read the poem that Dave mentioned. It made me think of Scullion talking about peace with justice in the Life on the Road documentary, also that line in smoke and, strong whiskey, Of those who are forced to choose, some will choose to fight.
There is a cut down version of it above the video but it’s not easy to spot.

The line you quote is from Paul Doran’s “Natives” which I covered on the 1986 album “Unfinished Revolution”….Wally Page’s song “Smoke and Strong Whisky”also has many stand out lines…..
Two outstanding songwriters, interpreting and covering their songs has been inspirational in my working life….Paul’s “Greenland ” and “The Gardener” are both beautiful works…I expected both songs to connect ….Wally’s “Finglas Boys” to me is a classic but slipped by (almost) unnoticed….his “Duffy’s Cut” and “Los Desaperacidos” have provided me with great opportunities to sing out …
The main purpose in setting up this website was to create a space where the work could be discussed… I enjoy contributions like yours when the songs are back referenced…
Hilary mentioned “Knock” a while back …I took it out last week and gave it a good run out, this led to some new lyrics and a face lift…I may give it a whisper in Waterford this coming weekend
Rory is forever uncovering old gems…out of the blue he’ll have me digging out forgotten verses and remembering them here in the work room
I could be Taking Tea with Pinochet one day and Riding The High Stool the next

I togged off for the Seniors once… a friendly on The Curragh against Round Towers of KIldare… Toss MacCarthy was late from work in Irish Ropes and Billy Bell put me in at Full Forward…..I scored a goal….Toss turned up at half time ..I was taken off and never played Senior again…BUT I had my moment..

Hi C. great wins in GAA today for our respective teams, and some scoring in the Rugby !! I see you are committed to walking 100KMs during Lent https://fb.watch/brGouND7XR/ . Best of luck, no bother to you. I can’t find the link to support your steps I’m sure we 4711ers would be interested in backing you and Cill Dara, hoping for the 1 in a row again this year. Beir bua agus beannacht. H
Just want to say a massive thank you for giving you’re set list to my daughter Ella last week Tuesday 22nd @ the Pavillion.
Ella requested her favourite song “Johnny Jump Up” she was sitting in the front row with myself & my nephew and she belted it out along with yourself. She also got a guitar pick at the end of the gig along with a postcard of yourself off a lovely gentleman as we were leaving. The gig was brilliant as usual and Ella was just over the moon.
Thanks Christy, see you again soon.

Hello Christy and All,
And I heard that his budget for tickling sticks was completely off the scale.
Seriously though, I think it’s really grubby for the tax people to go searching through someone’s house looking for money. It’s not like it actually means anything, like a person. Yack!
The first quarter with France and Scotland was like a roller coaster yesterday. So exciting! 12 minutes in and there were 17 points on the board. Must be the fastest scoring start ever.
Hi Christy, sorry for a 2nd quick post but i just found, on bbc football website, the story of Don Patricio who was Patrick O’Connell.
An amazing story of a Dubliner who played for Man U , connected to Blyth Spartans and coached Real Betis and Barcelona during the scumbag-franco years before dying a pauper.
Worth a check out.

Today it is

Gales against sunshine
Deepheat against brillcream
Girn against twinkletoes
However the romans didnt once conquer far and wide without ability so i hope your lads are not taking this too lightly.
As David Keenan sings ‘her skin was the colour of an italian summer’ so don’t get distracted, and instead turn to the Bord na Mona man.
Cheers

Hi C. For the last few days, I’ve had ‘Bread and Roses’ in mind – seems to sum up the world mood and give a small % of positivity.
The phrase sums up numerous projects – notably, Mimi Farina RIP – well worth an online trawl for anyone with time/ inclination.
Great that you’ll soon be planning road trips – all the best, as ever.
