Great info about a brilliant Woody Guthrie exhibition in a superb looking NYC venue – new to me/ looks amazing. Lots of info and a real treat in bleak times via the exhibitions section at http://www.themorgan.org
As the news gets worse and ‘politicians’ here are beyond shame, Woody’s voice becomes louder in my head.
All the best

Location: A pleasant day in Mildura, on the Murray River, Australia.
Johnny Boy makes me homesick for a land I’ve visited only once…
So very gentle & touching, I find myself whispering the words as go about my day.
The anniversary of Lord Nelson’s space launching reminded me of when my Dad told me of the event with a satisfied grin – I was 14.
Hi C, for the day that is in it, Lá Idirnáisiúnta na mBan / International Women’s Day https://youtu.be/7NeGsicyR40 This song was mentioned recently in a TG4 documentary in the Finné series about the Eco Warriors who tried to protect the Glen of the Downs. Úna Ní Bhroin describes how you visited the camp “It was just another magical night, sitting around the campfire — someone always had a guitar. We were in our winter clothes, looking a bit rough, and suddenly someone was joining us. I turned around, we didn’t have electricity, just torches, so it was quite dark, but I recognised him. I said how I liked his song about the goddesses [‘Burning Times’]. It’s an ode to feminism. He sang it for us.” Beir bua agus beannacht. H

never saw that “Burning Times” version before..Id forgotten about those slight lyric changes..they work very well..thanks for posting..I love Cathal’s Banjo on outro..might call for a re-mix
I well remember two visits to the Glen..
” see the Young Warriors climb down from the trees
chain themselves to machinery”
They are remembered in that verse of “Clock Winds Down”
they were a brave collective..ridiculed by many (including an RTE chat show host)…I salute them
Hi Christy.. todays look at history led me to, “Magic Nights in the Lobby Bar”..in particular the line, “There were magic nights in the lobby bar when Brendan Ring played Madame Bonaparte”..
T’was on this day in 1796 that Napoleon Bonaparte, future emperor of France, married Joséphine (also known as Madame Bonaparte, whom the tune is named after)..

Hi christy,
Hope alls well with yourself a chara. Heading to Drogheda on Saturday night for a long overdue catch up with yourself and your music. Can’t wait! Twelve members of our family will be travelling from Lurgan to have a night’s craic. Its my youngest sons 1st gig and needless to say he has our heads wrecked with excitement. His names Micheal scullion and he’s a big fan of your good self. If possible I’d appreciate if you could give him a shout out. That would just be the icing on the cake for him. Ps ordinary man is his favourite christy song. I also understand you can only do your best. So good to be back travelling the country listening to your music live. It’s been too long. So from the Scullion clan, Lurgan……. Keep er lite christy!

the Scullions are coming ! safe journey South….I’ll have to raise my game
Hello Christy and All,
I saw a TV programme yesterday where a Scottish guy was talking about walking across the land and the mass trespass to regain the same thing round here. He stayed in a bothy in the Highlands.
The folk session in Brighouse is moving back to the Commercial Inn, where it was before the pandemic. Haven’t been there for years, it’s by the railway station. I’m thinking of taking Rosalita and Jack Campbell, plus the bodhran. This will be its first outing. They haven’t had a bodhran player the other times I’ve been, so it should be ok.
Rebecca

when Steve played his Pipes in Luddenden Foot
they could hear him in Stockton-on-Tees
Another event of interest via Salford’s http://www.wcml.org.uk 23rd March with Johnny Campbell from Huddersfield.
Johnny sounds like an interesting guy, following MacColl/ Bragg’s style. His gig (also free online) centres around the rights of people to roam land and C19th ‘trespass’. Good info under the ‘events’ section of the WCML website.
Time for a cuppa now with ‘Manchester Rambler’ in mind – Harry Boardman/ MSG and sun shining…
Have a good day

We are looking forward to seeing you in Drogheda on Saturday night. In February 2017, a week after our wedding you dedicated Nancy Spain to us as it was part of our mass the week before. It was a beautiful moment which we still treasure.
5 years later we have 2 gorgeous boys and another baby due this coming weekend. “now gathered ’round us we have our own crew”. Who knows, maybe some of your tunes might bring on the labour!!
We will be in attendance on Saturday night in the Barbican with my parents. I would love if you could dedicate a song to all the grandparents of Ireland. They are all deeply loved and heroes who sacrifice so much for their children and grandchildren. You know which song might fit the bill best.
Hello Christy and All,
When I was a kid I tried to convince my Mum that it would be a good idea to keep a horse in the cellar. My brother didn’t back me up, he was too busy making mud pies in the garden.
Then when I started work my boss told me that his next door neighbour had kept a horse in the kitchen when he was a kid. They were posh up in Newcastle…
I did a piece on Lawlor’s hotel in Naas late last year on one of the radio shows, and your mention of the food tent run by Mrs. Lawlor reminded me of it. It’s a great family run hotel with a new ‘wing’ opening this spring..I think jack is the man currently running.
A pal I know lives on Booterstown Avenue, and when he moved in, the chap movin out and hanging around was Donovan….
Never had much luck at the races, but once I was at Leopardstown , St. Stephenszzz Day when a fella gave me a prod with a Racing Post asked me if wanted the winner of the 2.20…..I told him no, coz I only had a small garden out the back.. 😉
Hi Christy,
A nag that i have a share in was second today at Wexford….dry old men of cloth and silk watched the sport of kings.
Another race today had a runner named ‘Blanket on the Ground’ though it wasn’t ridden by Ms Billie Jo Spears claiming 7.
I wonder if ‘Joxer Goes to Stuttgart’ once came under orders at the Phoenix Park, or ‘Raggle Taggle Gypsy’ entered the stalls at Roscommon and ‘Nancy Spain’ troubled the judge at the old Mallow track?
Winner alright, winner alright.
Rory
Ps our homebred pet name ‘Joxer’ is coming under the hammer at Goffs at Kill in June if you fancy a bid…
Christy's reply
Old memories rekindled…we used to cycle to the Curragh races…opposite the stands there was a free access area…4 bookies and Mrs Lawlor from Naas had a food tent….there would be a 3-card-trick team and various ne’er-do-wells mingling with those quite content to be “outside” ….I back Vic Rose in the last race… one shilling at 33/1 and he/she skated in…I got paid in thruppeny bits, tanners and was well weighed down cycling home way back in 1959….
In 1961 I was at Goodwood the day that PJ (Darkie) Prendergast had a doubly..I’d travelled on a bus tour from The Three Pigeons in Southall where I was domiciled. The last thing I recall was Rum and Black on the bus back to Middx.
My self and the late Billy Parkinson hitch hiked to Baldoyle Races havin got “good information” the night before from the Late Billy Burke in The Harp Bar in Kildare. That nag is still running . But Billy made it up to us when he told us to get on Santa Claus when he made his first appearance at The Curragh. We got on him at 22/1 and he skated home…Me & Billy were in the money
in 1963 I was stationed in Clonmel. Myself and Martin Harney went to Powerstown Park where we landed a very good double. We made our way back to the Hotel Minella for T Bone steaks, porter and brandy…
My last race meeting was in 1976 when we went to Gowran Park..Boiler White marked my card and I’ll say no more. The Boiler was a legendary Kildare Footballer who became a Turf Accountant.
I was on Mr What when he won the Grand National at 18/1
I tend to forget my losses of which there were many
Hello Christy,
I’ve been listening to some trad stuff with bodhran. I heard a gotgeous thing with you and Connor Byrne, the wounded hussar and jigs but live recordings, can be weird on the balance. It hadn’t picked up the bodhran. I know how sensitive you are to the balance and that sound man you work with is a master of his craft.
Here’s one where I could fault the balance. Not sure what you will think. I love it, and the interaction between the musicians too. https://youtu.be/lS2PMy9Dw5M
Great that the Waterford gig went well – nice choice of road music!
Having had ‘Universal Soldier’ in my head for days, I’m having a Donovan fest…He’s been a soft target for begrudgers over the years, but he’s pure class and very diverse. ‘Josie’ now – we played it many times – pubs, clubs and weddings. Happy days.
Keep well
