Hi Christy.. just came across a link that may be of interest.. I’m sure it will evoke some memories too.. a lot of the names on here I would have heard through your music and reference..”I never met Bob Dylan, but I sang with the Pecker Dunne”
I’ve been a huge Christy fan since I was a teenager; now as a middle-aged emigrant this music means SO much more time, invoking memories that bring me back to the mid 1980s.
Hi Christy,
Sunday night in a hostel setting Matt McGinn and his pal Matt from Derry served up a treat.
Supper and song in the heart of the Mournes, backdrop superb, music gorgeous.
Matt was delighted that you want to invest him with an irish knighthood but asks you go easy with the sword.
Adorning the hall walls were hoes saws bridles axes hammers pitchforks etc and 40 very lucky souls enjoying the magical music with a mug of tea and a few sandwiches.
He plays Belfast and Dub next month…well worth a visit.
My trip was magic despite the rugby, start to finish.
Take care
Rory
Hello Christy,
Four Joe Dolans, no wonder we’re all so confused. He could fill an identity parade.
I know that daughter
She was chaste
And often caught
Do you remember from your time in Yorkshire whether there was a folk club in Brighouse, or were we too behind the times for that? I know there was a good place near Mixenden.
Elton John in Halifax. I nearly fell off my chair when I first heard about that.
Poor old Cragg Vale.
Hi Christy
Yes, it was the 80’s when I went to The Wexford Inn.
I used to work in Capel street after leaving school so.used to stay in town and go to gigs.
The Wexford Inn could be brilliant but it could be a bit wild!!!
But that suited me at the time. Now it would probably cheese me off if people weren’t quiet when a sing was being sung.
There was quite a patriotic atmosphere at those times.
Used to go to The Baggot Inn and McGonagles also.
Have never lost my love of seeing / hearing live music and it was formed in Dublin, Galway and Mayo xxxx
Theresa
Hi Christy.. a busy few days of travelling this past week allowed for some listening whilst on the road and in the air.. gave “Folk Tale” a blast.. Love the versions of Easter Snow and On Morecambe Bay put down… Glad to hear Mullingar was enjoyed by all..backed by a fierce front row..
“Oh the music..when Seamus; he did play”

Hello Christy,
Listening to live in 2006, I think it’s in Dublin. Made me think about the challenge of covering songs. There’s no point trying to match the original because that’s never going to happen. So I take them, let them be and see where they go and what happens. Quite often they turn into something quite different. I like this.

Great that Mullingar went well and fascinating to read about the 2 mighty Joe Dolans…
I hope it’s ok to do a bit of a non music hijack here – a cause close to many a heart and hopefully of interest (esp to Aussie readers) Talking to friends at weekend who updated me about an epic bike ride around Australia, aiming to raise $100 000 Aus towards mental health awareness. Serious training is underway by their son, Ben and his mate, Jay, for the gruelling ordeal setting off in a few weeks… details are at http://www.boomerangloopau.com.au Particularly in need of sponsorship, should any kind souls read this and be able to help.Thanks.
I was listening to some of Brendan Power’s amazing harmonica playing over weekend. Never been able to get much out of one, but in admiration of those who can! Have a good day.

Thanks for the reply Christy.
I am from Dublin originally and have seen you many times over the years including The Wexford Inn when I was a teenager!!!
We have lived in Todmorden for about 20 years and love it here.
Great music venues small and large and we see lots of great artists in Manchester including you and Declan at The Brigewater Hall.
Many great memories and during lockdown music has played an even more important role.

Mention of Wexford Inn gigs brings me back to mid 80s….did a series of Friday night gigs in that wild and wonderful ballad lounge….anything could happen there…office parties, stags and hens were regular….pints of porter were plentiful…quiet songs often silenced….I recall a champagne being (succesfully) aimed at me mid song causing great hilarity all round….twas to the Wexford Inn Nicky Kelly came upon gaining his freedom…be curious to hear your teenage memories of that long-since-demolished venue
Hello Christy,
Well, Italy had a bit of a day yesterday. Their reaction after that last kick was the highlight of the tournament for me.
Here’s a little twiddle from the Dubliners in the same vein https://youtu.be/zb7TA_4rEHM
Hello to Theresa, I’m just up the road from you in Brighouse.
Hi there,
I am watching all the dates being planned and going on the page and wondering when we might be able to get over the water to see you live.
I know you have dates up until the 2nd of September and I wonder if you are planning to have a break then ir if there are any more dates in the pipeline?
Thanks

Hello Christy,
It was remembering an hour we spent in Mullingar on out first trip to Ireland that set me off.
This is the song I was thinking of https://youtu.be/43Pi7Uo3sss
I’m pretty sure I’ve never heard Joe Dolan sing, but I love your version of this song.
He gets a shout out in Lisdoonvarna too I think…
That gig with Liam and Laoise Kelly sound like a wild ride.
A very different thing, bit it took me back to student days in Manchester when I played timps in Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring. No one except the conductor had a clue what was going on but by some miracle we all finished together. It was a roller coaster of a gig.
Looking forward to a similarly wild rugby fest this afternoon, with luck and a prevailing wind. Good luck to All!

That explains it ! We were blessed ,in Ireland, with two singing Joe Dolans. Joe from Mullingar ,a great singer and showman, fronted his own Band for decades and achieved great fame and notoriety the world over.I met him twice and he was the very best of company.
Joe Dolan from Galway was a founder member of the band Sweeney’s Men alongside Johnny Moynihan and Andy Irvine….(when Joe went off to fight the war he was replaced by Terry Woods, latterly of The Pogues, he Terry left Sweeny’s he was replaced by Henry McCullough later with Wings … I think, or was it Joe Cocker ?))
I recorded two of Galway Joe’s songs…the one you posted and another called “The Foxy Devil” both on an album called “The Iron Behind The Velvet”back in 1977…Last time we met we were both very involved with Fr Jack’s medications. Joe was larger then life, a truly memorable character…
Its the other Joe gets the shout out in Lisdoonvarna
Wow… what a gig that was…. must’ve felt like you were in the audience with the stage set-up. A great crowd they were too , respectful and nice singing along …. just the one chap who suffered from premature EGGjaculation !!
Fair play with Johnny Boy too…. special moment.

Great to see You ,Ger and all the other 4711ers across the front row last night…there was one “10 seconds before everyone else” in the room last night but ,apart from the “hard boiled egg” I did my best to keep up with him…
Great to be back at a “hotel” gig…The Park in Mullingar has always been a welcoming venue….last night could not have been better for me and the crew…next up is Killarney….
Hi Christy,
Finn has been a naughty boy ( though that keeps him playing on the edge) so we may only get a glimpse today sadly. The Hawick boys will do us proud but i think an irish win is likely despite my roaring on the scots.
Listened to the chieftains’ album the wide world over from hawick to stranraer, lovely but haunting version of her Magdalene Laundries with Joni Mitchell.
May the best team win. Rory
