As if to highlight the point….
Youtube john ‘c’ reilly singing in a crowded pub 862,000 views .
John ‘Jacko’ Reilly singing ‘who put the blood’ 595 views.
No disrespect to ‘c’ but… really??!!
Christy's reply
yes Rory…but we know…neither of us would swop our 595 for their 862,000…. they are more then welcome to it
Well Christy, seems like you are coming out of the bunker which is great news.
Perhaps the music has been a tonic, no doubt following Dave’s leads will have wiled away some hours with fascination, with others too like the ideas of Rebecca and many 4711ers.
The goggle box is replaced by the googlebox and what is next?
Maybe just good old fashioned stuff like the turning of a black vinyl 33 with John Reilly singing would be a sufficient elixir, as the world strives for greater perfection, forgetting that perfection existed before in many guises such as in a back bar room off Boyle town square….we are not so easily pleased as a race now, but we should be.

Tell you the truth Rory…one of the great advantages of an obsession with songs, singin ’em , playin ’em, writing and re writing ’em, learning ’em, losing e’m , finding ’em….. dont leave an old lad much time for chasing down rabbit holes..I love that so many links get posted here but I just dont get time to click on ’em all..every now and then `I’ll take a gike…sometimes find a gem of a ;link…always grateful but not always clicking….
I’ll never forget that night in 1964.Mrs Bridie Grehan behind the counter, long after closing time, tending to pints of black porter, cigarette between her lips….
“quiet now everybody..we’re gonna have a song from John Reilly…Go On John…Sing a Song ”
” well there were three auld Gypsys came to our Hall Door”
Interesting film news via Woody Guthrie Archives.’1913 Massacre’ is now released – featuring Arlo Guthrie, made by Ken Ross and Louis V Galdieri – based on Woody’s song about the disaster in Calumet, Michigan.

I’m gonna sing this song come Monday at the Gig For Red Cross Appeal to Ukraine……I’ve not gigged it for 30 years but your suggestion brings it all back
Good morning Christy, sending good thoughts and vibes your way from across the Western Ocean ! Looking forward to catching up with a couple of gigs this year, ah the music and the songs, thanks as always. See you soon. Brian.
Hello Christy,
Good morning to you and fab to hear of the negative test.
Hopefully you’ll be back in the saddle in no time, or in a jiffy if you prefer.
Talking of saddles, here’s a rollicker from a year or two back https://www.itma.ie/digital-library/sound/ballad_of_ruby_walsh_christy_moore
Keep getting better.

I’ve been practicing this one for Fridays return to Carlow
1984 was a couple of years before my arrival Christy (1990).. Bono and U2 also played there in 1980.. by the time I arrived at the front door in the mid 2000s it was a youth disco.. it is still a hub in Lavey where people meet, eat, play bingo and if you were lucky a bit of country music on the weekends in the lounge.. you’ve some memory for the venues and towns..
You’re on the money Christy, Ballinagh Hall still standing and it’s just at the crease where two hills meet. Not too far from Grousehall, then Granard, before a winding road into the midlands. Farm machinery would still be all the rage. Speaking of farm machinery, I was in Dublin recently and a fella drove by in a John Deere. What had he inside the door only a hurl.. ready for the call up or the puck out! Great to hear you’re on the right side of it.. Kev

I dont suppose you were in The Lavey Inn the night my Bodhrán went awol back in 1984….the same day I met a man who helped me find missing verses of “The Bundle of Lies”….my grandfather,Jack Power, used to recite it back in the 50s when he had a bottle of stout (or two)…..he was the best grandfather a boy could have….I never played Granard but went well in Tierworker, Kingscourt and Belturbet…Cootehill was mighty a few years back…twas a Sunday night and I got them all coming home from Devotions….reeking of Frankinsense and missing Glenroe….
Hi Christy..hope the bitter bugs been’ bate! Played a gig Sunday evening in Ballinagh (pronounced Ballin-ya) and a friend whom you dedicated Scapegoats to in Vicar St a few years back requested it. It’s a great song to sing…that line where it changes to “Scales of justice, balance up your act; am I talking to myself or to the wall?..”
Christy's reply
first heard this on a cassette sent me by Eamon Cowan who wrote the original lyric…it developed along the way..always a great favourite in Barrowland Glasgow especially when Paddy Hill is in the audience…
I played in Ballinagh twice in the early 80s….I remember a community hall near a cross roads ..a hilly village..a lively audience…for some reason I’m getting flash backs to lots of farm machinery..tractors in the car park..it could be covid trippin with my memory..
got a negative reading yesterday..feeling positive today
Hello Christy,
I hope you’re doing ok today. My mum and dad are coming round for lunch later. I usually get to sing for them. One of these days I’m going to pluck up courage to sing without the harp. I’ll probably still hold onto it for comfort though.
I hope you get well soon and perform at the Concert in support of the Irish Red Cross Ukraine Appeal.
If you can, please, sing the Viva la Quinta Brigada dedicating it to Ukraine. As there are so many parallels. A lot of people “from every corner of the world” came to stand beside the Ukrainian people “to try and stem the rising fascist tide” from russia. We are reliving what you sang about.
God bless you and all the people with open eyes and hearts.
Glory to Ukraine! Long live the Heroes!
Hello Christy and All,
I saw this and thought people here might like it.
The ITMA has produced a programme for the recent Liam O’flynn Collection concert.
Its available free of charge. You can add it to any order or just pay postage. https://www.itma.ie/shop/liam-oflynn-concert-programme
Here’s a Sunday morning joke
And Pharaoh spake. And said.
“budgie budgie doggie camel fish”
Just a little note of thanks to Hillary for that post on the C M documentary and indeed for all the kindness , quietly given but always delivered ; with aplomb. It was a very different experience watching it , with the lapse of time. Both reflective and enjoyable …
Dear Christy, at the recent Matt McGinn gig he mentioned a cinefilm he made a song from . He has now put it on youtube.
I think you will love it, old fashioned musical get together in a kitchen from 30+ years ago.
It is under Matt’s videos ‘Kitty’s cottage’ and i think you ( and dave and poss others) will love to spend hours watching….especially in isolation.
Much Love and regards
Rory
Hello Christy,
Thankyou for the message. I know none of us would expect a reply while you’re poorly, but it’s good to see one, all the same.
I hope you’re able to do some strumming or plucking, or whatever it is you guitar guys do. With a harp we don’t pluck, we pull and release. And then it’s called plucking.
Folk singers are lucky I think, we’ve got the whole shebang all in ourselves. I like humming to the harp, don’t know if you do the same with the guitar. Like two instruments in one person.

ps excellent to read Yegor’s post – ‘no pasaran’, for sure! D
Hi Christy/ all
I hope you’re doing ok, Christy
Thanks to Rebecca for the tip off about the Liam/ITMA programme and Rory for the wonderful cine link.
‘Peaky Blinders’ had a brilliant finale on BBC – made even more atmospheric by Lisa O’Neill’s version of Dylan’s ‘All the tired horses’… pure class.
Take care
Dave
Hello Christy,
I hope you are doing ok this morning.
Here’s Liam playing the beautiful B set.

It’s the set that Louise Mulcahy plays now. I love how we can follow a lineage of players for each instrument.
