Great chat yet again Christy. Glad they removed the tooth but left the wisdom. Glad that your Simon piece is having a good effect. I was shocked to read a couple of weeks ago about how much one leading Irish charity’s income was down from last year. People are feeling the pain and we are in danger of becoming a have all versus have not society. I would encourage anyone to put that few pounds or few pence to whatever charity they support – it WILL make a difference to somebody – and make the giver the better for it too. Sorry for the rant – just feel we need reminding of how lucky some of us are.
Loved the few tunes with Seamie Dowd in Sligo and looking forward to the “band” in Galway in January. Hope we don’t have Winter Snow, never mind Easter Snow. Keep well Christy and hope the low period has passed again.

Hi Christy,
Great to read a review of the latest tour from both sides of the coin on the latest chat.
As in performer playing, and fan listening to the words and music..Yourself and Hilary give a really wonderful account of all that is good in the musical life. And that’s good..

How is the tooth now? Is it from eating too much junk? Tiny finaly got his walking papers .
Tell me about jolly ravers when did you first hear it? And how did page come to write it.

I first heard it at a hooley in Mick and Peg Lally’s house many moons ago…Wally never told me what inspired but he said I gave hime one of the lines…its a great song…never took off like I thought it would but every now and then I get a call out for it from some deep sea fisherman seasick on dry land….the tooth cracked on the bone of a streaky rasher off some auld Galway boar with ribs of granite
I updated my e-mail address on my profile but the latest e-mail from the site has gone to my old e-mail address. The site shows my new address in my profile. Any ideas what i am doing wrong?
Flippin hellfire Christy it’s bleddy freezing. Time for a bit of ‘what’ll we do if the kettle boils over…what’ll we do but set it again.’ Am sitting here reprising the Barrowlands experience whilst attempting to gain some inspiration to do some work. Sometimes it is hard but as you rightly said the doldrums will turn into fair winds. xx

Morning Christy,
I am a son of the late Dr Dan O’Connell of Newbridge. I’ll try not to bore you, but need to give a bit of background to my question. 8 months our 4th son Ollie was born with down syndrome and a serious heart defect. He has spent most of his life in Crumlin and had a number of open heart surgeries.
We have been trying to help raise money for the fixcrumlin appeal as our governement wont, so I set up a Facebook page “Ollie’s Little Heart’s Appeal” and are doing well in raising funds for the new cardiac ward to which we owe the staff there, a great deal.
I have done a DVD with pics of his journey and used 3 of your songs Duffy’s Cut, Listen, and China Waltz. Would like to post it on his facebook page but dont know if it is legal without your premission?? Thats it Christy no hassel if I cant, but would just like to know. Thanks.
Still dreaming from the Scotland tour…
And wanting to buy the ‘Come all you dreamers’ DVD for Christmas pressies – as close as I can get to sharing the experience with people I’d have love to have shared it with. But I can’t find it here or Amazon. Anyone know where I can get hold of it? And are there any signed copies left from the tour?!
Many thanks,
Anna
I had the absolute pleasure of being at the gig in Glasgow on monday 12 november 2012, it was the first time i had seen the boys live, and honestly to say i was not disappointed would be the biggest understatement ever, I was completely blown away just the sheer presance of both men was incredible, but then the show begins and the amazing , haunting guitar music of Declan just takes you away somewhere special, and when the Legend that is Christy Moore starts to sing you are instantly captivated, covered in goosebumps, and what an evening you have ahead. It’s by far the best concert ive ever been to, and certainly will not be my last. I once said Yellow Triangle was my favourite, but i hadnt been listening to the boys for very long at that time, BUT, The January Man is the nicest song i have ever heard.
P.S. Take care lads, all the best, and cant wait to see you both next time in Glasgow.
Ah, I’m having fun. I hope I’m not boring you all. I drove all the way from Missoula,MT to a Chieftains concert that was taking place on Vancouver Island. Ah, it’s about 2008. There was a theater called McPhersons – it may have been the playhouse. I don’t know, since there are two theaters on Vancouver island called McPhersons. Be aware, if you are trying to see a performance there, get it right. But, I got to Victoria early, well what to do with my spare time, I went to a pub, Ha.
Of course in Canada – and in America – It’s not really a pub. It’s just a bar.
Well, since I was at the wrong theater I got to the Chieftains concert late, damn.
Well, in between songs I shouted out, “we miss you Derrick!” and “Matt Malloy!” Neither of them were present. Derrick unfortunately dead and Matt… somewhere else. Well,it didn’t go over well with the some English dude ,or Canadian dude , sitting before me. Granted now folks, it was a live concert and Iwas shouting out between songs. The usher then comes up to me and I said” Am I being too loud?” The Usher says, “Well as long as no one has a problem” Then this Engilsh asshole says, ” Yeah I do!” Then I decided to bail. I didn’t want to be there anymore, even though I had driven a large distance just to see the Chieftains. Funny enough, the usher said in consolation, ” I’m Irish too”. Ha.
Ok, an aside. I frequented a bar in Ann Arbor, Michigan when I was often on the road for a job. I think it was called Connor O’Neils. There was a bar of the same name and same owner in Boulder, Colorado as well. I met the owner who is a nice man originally from Ireland. I don’t recall where. Anyway, when I was in town in Ann Arbor, I gravitated to this bar. They would have a céilidh on Sundays and I’d have a few pint’s -yeah right- and listen, and on occasion play my flute on a traditional tune with them. Most, if not all, the bar staff was from Ireland. I’ll never forget what the very nice bartender and also the sweet attractive bar gal said to me. “You know, in Ireland , we don’t date. We just go to the pub.” I got it, I totally got it. You know, here in America, or Canada, if you like a girl, you ask her out, spend some money on a meal or a movie and maybe she works out over time, or not. But, if this is true about going to the pub and hanging and observing the gals. No money spent until you dig the girl. You see her ups and downs, good moods, bad moods and THEN, you can get into spending some money on her. Ha! Now, if that is still the case in Ireland, now that is the way to go.

a lovely gig we attended the other night was almost ruined by loud interjections from a small number of inebriates who insisted upon sharing their pearls ….in an earlier life I was one such, drink was at the heart of my every activity…one day it was pointed out that ,for me, one drink was too many yet one hundred was never enough…The Commodore in Vancouver is the venue I know…my memories of the City are fond but vague…had the good fortune to play with Matt Molloy from 1978-1980. We worked on a few albums together and I still recall the excitement his playing brought on. I have often wondered about the word asshole…is it derived from arse hole or is there another reason for its usage….played Boulder once…found myself at a Festival of Cowboy Poetry….the sky was so blue, the air so cold and fresh…25 years on I can still feel it in my lungs
G’day Christy, getting in early for season’s greetings to you and yours. It seems you have had a very busy year and love reading all the comments. We can’t help feeling envious of the folks who have gone to not one but many of your concerts, but the only one we went to in 2007 at the Hammersmith Apollo will have to sustain us. As you say you never know. We do have your dvds and cds. Let’s know where you left your coat in Warrnambool and we’ll see if we can find it for you- we’re not very far away!!!!
Kindest regards, M and H ox

greetings Harry and Marg… we have enjoyed a good run of gigs this year…a few projects on the go at the moment..today is a beautiful winters day here..best wishes to you both and to all Australian songsters
Hi Christy,
I listened to your voiceover on the radio ad about homelessness. It would be great if you could lend an ear to ‘Shanragh- The Burly Man’ on youtube. As apprentices going to Bolton Street in the 70’s, we used to pass a man begging in North Earl St. One day I noticed him looking at the passers by and something about the defiance in his stare struck me. Many years later I got to put this song together based on that brief moment.
I remember reading before that in the dark hours when you tried to get to sleep, and couldn’t, you got up and did something positive instead of driving yourself crazy in the darkness. So I did exactly that and re-registered on your website. I haven’t posted for quite a while but have just watched the Glasgow Barrowlands gig for the umpteenth time and it’s brilliant as is the behind the scenes programme. I seen you at the mad, but the best atmospheric one I have been to, first night gig in Belfast Waterfront in November 2011 and am going again in March next year and really looking forward to it. The songs you sang 30/40 years ago about unemployment, poverty and despair are just as relevant today but why Christy are the Irish, North and South, still so accepting and tolerant of ‘THEIR’ fate? Has all the fight gone out of us or did we ever really have it in the first place? I think there was more fire in our bellies in years gone past and the right wing media have conditioned us to suffer and take the blame and social fall out for the sins of their owners and masters. I have family in all 4 corners of the island and have never seen as much despair and gloom amongst our people. Sorry for ranting Christy the point I was making was that you still give many of us a lift in these dark times and a vent for our anger, All the best.

Morra 4GF32….that was no rant, just a welcome bit of sharing…..theres no doubt they have us where they want us…. we seem to have become a nation of docile, obedient shit-takers….with a few exceptions the same galoots are in the driving seat, the banking elite have become, if anything, even more arrogant, the PAYE workers, the poor, the elderly, the infirm, the special needs, these are the ones paying for the sins of the greedy…for the laissez faire attitude of Bertie Ahearn and his Government, the Ray (Dublin Bay) Burkes, the Pee Flynns and Ray McSharry’s and their team of lickers, the Brian Cowans, Mary Hanaffins, Mary Coughlans, Mary Harneys most of them, and many others, gone out to ( the very long) grass with awesome pensions …. the Johnny Ronans,Bernard McNamara’s,Tom McFeeleys, and their numerous counterparts are still lingering at the trough. The nameless Banker Tycoons who fed these monsters endless millions to chase sick fantasies, to fuel helicopters and Maybachs, champagne swilling lifestyles, endless acquisitive ego-boosting and criminal behaviours… all these lauded by the same Bertie who suggested that those who tried to call a halt, would be better of committing suicide…What a dirty slur that was. What sort of a ( repeatedly elected ) leader cur would utter such a crass and low exortation to his electorate from the platform…. At a time when thousands of families were suffering the pain of such loss and deprivation…
They seem to have us where they want us alright…supine on the couches of the nation, hypnotised by Football, X Factor and Downton Abbey, ………………………………………………………….. We are are back again at the same spot…. countless thousands pay the price…..Savita Hallappanavar and her family also pay the price for our silence…..

Forgive me if I’m having a brain fart; but, I tried to read a reply from Christy post of mine and all I can do is make another post since the site says to log in. What the hell am I doing wrong? Ya might explain it to others as well, as it is not exactly intuitive. Maybe it’s a European thing, but I can’t figure it out. I click on my previous post and can’t read the whole script. I click on what is clearly Christie’s longer response to my post, yet, I can’t read Christies whole post when I click on it. I log in, and nothing changes nothing is different. What the &^*%$ Help!

Great news about the Welsh tour, I’ll be there, good to visit Wales again, Mae Hen Wlad fy Nhadau …. well, land of my mother actually.
