Continued success and I still regret selling my 15 watt fender amp to Declan for eighty quid the night he was playing in Ucc about 1980

It has very special memories for my sister in law, who lost her husband almost three years ago. We came to your concert at The Sage and were disappointed that you did not sing The Voyage. With hindsight we wished we had asked at the interval or indeed shouted out the request but we didn’t and hope that this time our plea is answered.

I must do some further investigation about Katie Reilly’s, that was a mighty great place for the gigs in it’s day and a great pit stop on the cycle from Waterford to Tramore on a blazing June day….Clonmels finest would set you up for the second leg of the journey! Nice to read about your adventures in the Chat. It’s always read, so do keep them coming. The Library is a great addition and will be a great source to most of us if we miss you when you’re on the radio….doing interviews etc. Hoping to catch you in in Charleville in April if all goes to plan. I think ‘Least We Can Do’ is a gorgeous song, have a think for Charleville! “A peace for all mankind, it’s the least we can do..”

Gerry Diver’s “Speech Project” is, to these ears and this heart, an intense and emotional listening experience, its music taking its cue from the colors and cadences of Irish speech, voices from the bog and brick and blood and stone, improvising from those essences. It’s not harmless, but where it hurts it also opens into something deeper, longer than memory. In the headphones earlier I could hear the chants of eighteenth century street protests in Dublin, hear Frank Harte sorting through old broadsheets above a bar in Chapelizod, see a woman in a field with her body covering the stillness of someone, and hear the wind collecting all the hope and defeat and resurrection of a people’s bearings and soul. I’m listening to it now for the third time, on two difference stereos at once this time, one on a five-second delay, books falling from shelves open on poems unread for a hundred years, my ribs barely containing the beat of my heart. There are spirits present here, in body and disembodied, broken shadows joining hands. Resonance. No one and nothing are ever lost. I’d like to know and experience that as true every day. I have feelings pouring forth the wild in me. Thank you, Gerry Diver, and Christy and Shane and Margaret, and all involved. DL

Morra Doug…..great to read this…I was similarily moved by this work…I must get your piece to Gerry, I am sure he will appreciate it. I have heard a lot of different comments about “Speech Project”, not every one gets it but I was surprised at some who did’nt. Then again, our listening world has changed utterly in the last 4 decades.So much background noise, so much available music at our fingertips all the time, everything is taken for granted…a lot of listening now is far less focused as we try and watch sky news headlines , read the sports results, wait for the microwave to bling and listen to speech project simultaenously….I say well done Gerry Divers for having the ear to hear the key notes withing Joe Cooleys speech, the imagination to create such a soundscape, the courage to try and make the project happen and the sheer determination it took to dedicate years of his life to this worthy creation…

I got tickets for your gig at the Inec in Killarney on Friday night for xmas from my sister but again my timings to be home have slipped as Im on board the ship at present about 200 miles of the coast of Liberia we sailed from Equatorial Guinea last Saturday but the bloody current has put a stop to our good speed so wont be in Las Palmas till the 20th of March where Im due to pay off that is of course if the back to back makes it down, so I ve missed the gig again anyway My Girlfriend Fiona and her sister in law will be going to the gig so all is not wasted and Im hoping to catch a gig later on this year, the last show I saw was at the Forum in Waterford around the time you brought out the Live at the point CD,so yep its been a while, but thats the joys of the job, if you get a chance and it doesnt upset the song list could you sing Sonnys dream or Nancy Spain, all the best Christy hope the tour goes well. Time to put some miles on the auld Corolla again,.. . Music ,Rugby, craic and good company……gonna be a busy few days.

Always guaranteed a fantastic night’s entertainment from yourself and Declan and hope ye don’t have to resort to the woolie hats and emergency layers that you had to find to stay warm in the Theatre Royal in Wexford on last occasion we saw you! We have family members travelling over from Manchester to join us for this gig so roll on the 21st!

I loved it and I saw names from the past you spoke about. You credit Bill Leader with the genesis of the ‘Prosperous’ album as you said on the sleevenotes about meeting Bill Leader in ‘Mooneys of the Strand’ if I recall right – and look what came from Prosperous………
Ian Cambell and ‘The Sun is Burning’ I still play it from time to time on the “The Iron Behind the Velvet” though I think you credit Luke Kelly, you must heard have the great Luke singing it.
Also another name you mentioned, Nic Jones, one great folk singer, oh where did he ‘vanish’ on us? Philip King (coincidentally) mentioned him on his South Wind Blows radio programme last night. He played at the Tom McHale Folk club in Athlone many years ago, a great gig, great singer & guitarist. Philip played ‘Little Musgrave’ last night.
On BBC 4 TV a few weeks ago I watched an engaging prog on train journeys across England hosted by Michael Portillo. One stop along the Lancshire coast was Morecombe Bay and he talked briefly about the cockle pickers and the awful tragedy; I thought of you and the song.

I remember Tommy McHale, what a great whistle player he was…he came to Kildare in the 60s as a young man and played in Pat Dowlings of Prosperous.He had a great style and repertoire and I had a few drinks with him too. He died tragically and far too young. Nic Jones survived a similar tragedy in the 70s. His injuries left him unable to play or recall his incredible repertoire. I hear that he is playing again all these years later. I love his singing and playing and still turn to his recordings for comfort and succour on dark sleepless nights. Nic’s ” Penguin Eggs ” is perhaps my favourite album. Sadly his recorded work now belongs to a ruthless heartless runt who has never had an ounce of compassion to share with anyone.I saw Portillo on the choo choo.

We visited the Thin Lizzy expo and enjoyed it…I knew Phil a little bit…always a lovely man to meet…even the first time we met he greeted me like a brother…I find it impossible to involve myself in such pursuits while there are still songs to write, to learn and to sing…. if my voice fails before the rest of me I may well do a bit of archiving but today I have songs to sing
He played for pontypool Christy,And still with us at the young age of 85,A lot of talk about the grand slam now,Hope the boys give a good performance next Saturday.

that confirms my hunch…I have this picture in my minds eye..it goes back to when my father took me to Lansdowne road when I was a young lad..I can still see Ray Prosser standig at the front of the lineout just in front of where we sat on the old sideline seats. Tony O’Reilly was on the wing for Ireland that day..I can name many of the Irish team but Ray is the only one I can recall from the Welsh xv….I was 8 or 9 and it was such an amazing experience…I’m not positive as to how much is memory and how much is imagination…..Its lovely to read that the old prop is still to the good and grinding the opposition into the Cardiff Arms sod

not concerned so much as disappointed…there was quite a lengthy preamble to that gig and I wanted to give it our best shot, to honour Ewan McColl’s beautiful song….altho it may not have been apparent to listeners and viewers, to Declan and I it was a mess and we were very disappointed. However,an hour later we were across London in a Radio studio with Cerys Matthews and all feelings of distress just flowed away down the river…have a good trip to The Pool,
the very man..I recall seeing him in Lansdowne Road when I was a lad…the steam was rising off him as he stood at the front of the line out…it was back in the day when the wingers threw in the ball to the line out..if Im not mistaken Gordon Wood was playing for Ireland the same day ( Father of Keith Wood)
