Hi Christy , great trip as always to Ireland.
Highlight was sitting with louise ( paul M’s wife) for our meal in Cashel with cammy, jayo and the others, toasting the Galtee Mountain Boy ( my filly with paul is to be race named named The Galtee Mountain Girl) only for Louise to tell me that her grand uncle was the great Dinny Lacey, the Galtee Mountain Boy himself.
I hope you can sing it soon and think of him.
Regards
Rory

yet another reason to sing this great song…The 4th verse now reads
“I’ll bid farewell to Old Clonmel , the Hive of the Honey Bee
and the safe-houses of Tipperary that oft times sheltered me
and to yonder Flying Column that kept the flag flying high
may their cause be ne’er forgotten said The Galtee Mountain Boy”…… ( the last verse keep shifting on me )
Its getting on for 60 years since I heard Patsy Halloran sing the first three verses in the Hillview Pitch & Putt Club,Clonmel, Very very late one Sunday night in 1964
back then there was no clubhouse..just an old timber shack..we adjourned there with a case of Large Bottles ( Danno’s) and had ourselves a feckin right good ballad session..
I was a sorry sight going into work the following morning.. I had a black eye and a dirty shirt..the manager sent me home ( to Annie Keogh’s) to “smarten up”, not an easy task..I’ve never mastered it
Coming thursday you have a gig in westport house. Great that these things are possible again. We have build a small holiday in the town around your presence there with friends from Holland for the third time ;-).. It would be great if you can play Beeswing during your performance because we all love that song. Have fun during that evening because i’m sure that we will.
Thanks in advance. Greeting from Nora, Willem and four friends.

Westport is a lovely town…..many and varied delights in the vicinity…hope you have a good visit
Quick update Rory and I survived the whirlwind tour of God’s Country and are back home safe and sound. Great break had by all and probably came out winning on the betting which is always a Brucey Bonus!
Would like to find out if there was any VAR at Athgarvin as our man Rory was at it in our Par3 comp I think….
I floundered a shade on the Saturday but the thought of you favouring the company at the Barras in Glasgow kept this old bhoy going!
Stay safe and strong my friend

I’ll check with the local Garda Station re Athgarvan Pitch& Putt Club…unsavoury behaviour has been reported in the Furze Bushes after dark and, as far as I know, the Garda and the Parish Priest have been looking into it
Hello Christy,
There are some lovely people here, such a supportive group.
I need to thank you, Christy, for what you said the other day. I’ve not met anyone else who really gets it like you do. It’s a rare thing to find a kindred spirit when you’re so out of step with most people.
And to the wonderfully kind John Liverpool, thank you for writing what you did.
Poor old Tom Waits, I need to go and have a listen to the marmite in his voice. I’m sorry, I’ve never heard him but the story was very effective.
I’ll be plucking away till they carry me out in a box. When you play an instrument everyday it becomes part of you. I can’t imagine life without a harp (or two…).
I was listening to Frank Harte yesterday, singing The Jolly Plough boy, accompanied by Donal Lunny. I’ll try to find a link.

Sorry to lower the tone but I just had to comment on “December 1942”.
So simple & painful…& we tell ourselves this would never happen again, surely???
Then we remember Brexit, Trump, Dutton & other racist fascists…
A beautiful song Christy – we will always remember & learn from past ignorance & bias.
Good – now I feel better: onwards & upwards!!
I will check out your suggested comedian & return fire with the late John Clarke & the brilliant Shawn Micallef
Lotsa good thoughts to you, your music, your musings & all on this roller coaster

December 1942….written by Ricky Lynch from Cork..I’ll be forever grateful that he shared it with me…It had not become a regular in the set…it tends to slay the gig, (and me too)..I will continue to sing it when the time feels right…of course the time is always right for us to be reminded of the horrors of fascism…but I feel that I walk a tightrope every time I step out to meet my listeners…I want to hold on to everyone until I get to the far side of the rope…

Tom Waits fan. Didn’t hear that one about his trip to Tralee.
Have heard that they’re not surprised Mr Brooks is staying in Kerry what with the price of hotels in Dublin. Would you be of blue or of red ?
Apologies for being parochial, aris ! It seems that Tom Waits was a regular in Danny Leanes Abbey Inn in 1981, a music and late bar ( very late, near the Garda Sation ! ) Possibly Tommy Horans freisin the main music venue & late bar. Beir bua agus beannacht. H
Rebeccah, keep on pluckin, if the only person who enjoys or ‘likes’ what you do is yourself then you are a success, you don’t need the adulation of strangers. I am a big Tom Waits fan who (going back a few posts) could be decscibed by some as ‘musical marmite’. In 1981 he and his wife spent three weeks living in Kerry before he hit the road on his European tour. The story goes that one night he called into a local bar which had a piano, he asked the barman if it would be OK to play a few tunes and the barman (not recognising him) told him to go ahead. After a couple of songs the barman came up to him and said, you can carry on playing the piano but do you mind not singing as we have had a few complaints about your voice. So no ‘likes’ for Mr Waits from the local strangers, but he hasn’t had a bad career in music.

Good man John..
Your post solves a query that’s comes to mind occasionally…
Back in 1981 Moving Hearts were playing in Horan’s of Tralee.
Afterwards we heard reports that Tom Waits arrived into the gig and departed again after a few tunes..
I’ve often wondered about it…your post about him spending three weeks in Kerry at that time lends veracity to the tale…
perhaps it was the same night that he encountered thon Barman
Hello Christy and All,
I’ve been reading about the Dagda and his harp. It’s warming my heart to think that the instrument I play has such a magical heritage. https://bardmythologies.com/the-dagdas-harp/
I wonder what he sounded like.
my name is Tristan, I am a 25 year old college student from Germany and I’m currently staying in Co. Sligo for an internship. I fell in love with the music of Christy Moore when I first got in touch with Irish traditional music 10 years ago. The music of Planxty made me starting to play the uilleann pipes and ever since I listen to the music of Christy Moore on a regular basis. It was just now that I realized, that Christy Moore is playing a couple of concerts in Ireland in the upcoming weeks and I feel like this might be a once in a lifetime opportunity for me to see him play a concert, as I will go back to Germany by the end of October. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to get a ticket for the concert in Westport. Long story short: Is someone here not able to go to the Westport concert and would therefore sell that ticket to me? You can contact me via e-mail: tristan.pargmann@web.de
Hello Christy,
I always feel like I’m jumping off a cliff when I do this, but here goes https://youtu.be/2ljjC-7w2bU
I posted this on Facebook a couple of days ago and it has had zero impact. Really zero, not a single like.
There’s lots of things I’d like to improve with it. Some of the consonants aren’t clear and I need to trim one of the nails on my right hand. Guess it makes it sound more guitary, in its unclipped state.
But I think it’s my best work so far, it doesn’t make me wince or want to put my head in my hands. I like the chords.
It’s weird being a singer. Like a bleeding roller coaster.

you are a singer and a harpist…do not concern yourself with likes and dislikes…you sing with passion, your accompaniment supports the melody you are singing, the process takes you to a special place, to a medititive state….this is a very privilidged plateau that not many achieve….take comfort and pride in what you are achieving… look in rather then out
