Happy New Year to you and all the crew Christy. Hoping to get the gig year off to a flying start in Galway. Whole town here talking about last night’s fireworks – maybe you’ll get a visit to the Maiden City during the year – even as a tourist.
A very happy New year to all readers and listeners.
Enjoy the Galway gigs.

Happy New Year to all.
John from Doire put us on to this documentary on the late John ‘Simi’ Doherty. ,the great fiddler and travelling tinsmith from Donegal., thought you might enjoy it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sb9h_au9hBM
It’s about 40 mins long., a really good look at how things used to be.
Christy's reply
Johnny Doherty travelled very light yet always managed to leave troves of treasured memories in his wake…such a sight, his Fiddle in his hand and his “toodle” box on his back. Reminiscent of Pecker’s ” Sullivan’s John”…..I have been reminded in the past few days of the quality of TG4’s programming…..also enjoyed the “Gradam” last night….great to see the Emigrant music so honoured…all the great music that returns home again to inspire those who stayed to keep the home fires burning…the recorded music of Coleman, Tuohy, Morrison in The States has always inspired the Traditional Players here…later the likes of Martin Hayes, Paddy O’Brien, Liz Carroll blazed the music over yonder….The London music scene was a pure revealation to me and thousands of others…I heard Raymond Roland, Roger Sherlock, Liam Farrell, Martin Byrnes, Michael Gorman, Maggie Barry, Gabe Sullivan, Danny Meehan, Jimmy Power,Felix Doran,The Dwyer’s Finbar, Richard and (God be good to him) Michael…I heard Johnny Bowe, Kevin Burke, Sean Maguire, Cathal McConnell, all of them in Exile in England where they lightened the load of manys the homesick migrant….fair play to TG4 for so honouring our great tradition…
Christy, I’m still coming back down to earth after the great night in Vicar St on the 20th. I’ve been a regular since the mid 80s but that night must be one of the most memorable. There was a great night in Ballincollig last Friday when Declan and Vicky performed superbly despite the rain rapping on the tiles above. Looking forward to Galway on Wednesday. Happy New Year to you and all. Sweet music roll on.

Happy new year…PS if I left anyone out I’ll put em in next year…Steve Silvermint, Nixie Comerford,as for that Mikey Kelly…tell him the feckin range is still smokin ( but then tell him I’m only jokin !!!)
I have been exiled from Bewdley for over ten years but the town and surrounding country have been my family home going back over five generations. I didn’t know you had gigged there! It would be great to hear from Dave where that gig took place. Happy New Year one and all.
Christy's reply
sometimes our correspondents appear but once then disappear away back into the ether..if I hear from Dave I will enlighten you as to the venue….keep coming back !
Hi Christy
Greetings from down the years! I booked you for our club in Halesowen in 1970… £10.00 plus expenses. You asked me for a song I sung that night, and to my eternal regret I never got round to sending it to you. Such is life. But, if you are looking around (ha!), it is on YouTube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sARbTtmNE3E
I also booked you for a club I ran in Bewdley, Worcesteshire: I recall you turning up late ‘cos you had been looking for BeNdley (my writing threw you a bit..), but more importantly that night, someone in the audience called out ‘Christo’. It stopped you in your tracks because only one person had ever called you that, and he was a school pal whom you hadn’t seen for 20 years or so. A reunion took place that night.
Halcyon days, my friend. Far-off, halcyon days.
Love and peace
Christy's reply
Dear Dave,
What a great buzz I got from reading this….I recall both Halesowen and Bewdley….Halesowen was Tue 24th Feb 1970 ( back on Mar 9th and Nov 23rd 1971 !!) cant track the Bewdley gig but I do remember driving my old blue ’56 Beetle around in circles looking for Bendley !
The old school mate I met that night was the late Billy Parkinson, a neighbour and friend from County Kildare…..I remember your playing and singing very well and I also recall that I was made very welcome at your club and was well treated. I went back one night to hear Alex Cambell play there. Thanks for the memories and for the song.
Maybe see you along the road on this neverending tour….
Thanks Marty….early on I was in awe of Ronnie Drew…first time I was near him was on an early Black and White TV show we did circa 1969…it was my first time on Irish TV. I was so nervous I did not even go near him…later on we struck up a chat when Planxty did 2 nights together in Teach Furbo out near Spiddal..we travelled a bit together in Australia and met up in Belgium and Holland….we connected well and I was priviledged to visit Him and Deirdre in their home on a number of occasions. He rang me to ask about singing Viva La Quinte Brigada. I was blown away by that call. We spoke a fair bit in the last 10 years of his life. Some of those chats I will always remember. I still see his son occasionally. Phelim is a leading actor in Dublin and ,like his father before him, he has a great grá for the ballads. Great to hear this recording you have just posted and to see the “Opera” that Hilary posted earlier.
Hi All its youtube weather,,,, I found this… it has many familiar faces from 1960s onwards…. a treasure trove I think myself,,,, http://youtu.be/482RwpkuHiY ,,, bain sult as… best of luck for Galway gigs and to a great 2013 to all. ,H
Hi Christy,
The song you refer to The Maid Of Dungannon, seems to be the same song that
Jim McCann had a huge hit with under the name Easy and Slow back in the 80s..RyanL
Christy's reply
it sure is the same song but I heard it when I was 17…back then it had this magic about it that captivated my young spirit…..”Down along Thomas Street aye and down to the Liffey, the sun went down and the evening grew dark, on down by Kingsbridge and begod in a jiffey, me arms were around her above in The Park” I dont think I have ever sung it but Jim McCann sure did a great job on it 20 years later
Hi Christy,
Back in the early nineties I dated a gal from Dongannon while she was in NY visiting. She turned me on to you and I never looked back. I bought all your albums and still do. I saw you at Randall’s Island and always vowed to one day see you in a smaller venue. I never could swing the dough to get to Ireland but someday I hope to. Almost 50 now myself so got to make it happen soon. Your songwriting and voice is the best and I have so many memories I can’t even count them Christy. So many different times you played in my head. Thanks for it all. Happy new year man.
Christy's reply
when I first came to live in Dublin in 1963 I heard a song called “The Maid from Dungannon”..it was sung by Jake McDonald from Crumlin whose other song was Carrickfergus. Jake, Rest His Soul. was no great singer but he knew a good song and was the best of company. We travelled a bit together. Various Fleadh Ceols and once we went to stay with his Aunt in Preston ,Lancashire….the first verse went ” Twas down by Christchurch that I first met with Annie, a neat little woman and not a bit shy. She told me her father had come from Dungannon, and I’ll take her back there in the Old Bye and bye”
