Hotbed of nothing
Holocaust of silence
The first time i heard this album i was unmoved, it was not what i was expecting.
I put it away for months, feeling a little disappointed.
However i had a notion to try again some months later, nearly a year had passed.
It grew into me Christy.
It continues to grow .
For these last 20 or so years i have kept reverting to it, with more frequency as each year passes.
It is a work of fine legacy, deep impact, dark and intimate, a meeting of strange bedfellows of styles.
I should never have doubted it or you.
Traveller will accompany my travels to the end of time.
Rory
Christy's reply
it came upon me almost by accident..
I’d been off the road for over a year..
I thought the gig was done…the head was not good…
then there was a session in the house one night
some of my Son’s friends were gathered
I got a guitar out and sang a few songs
got chatting with Leo Pearson
he was a young lad then, starting to make music
he expressed an interest in my songs
we got chatting and I visited his work room
we decided to get together in the garden shed a record a few songs
“Traveller” emerged
Leo is still making his music
Thank You Rory for this retro review

“The Wren The Wren The King of all birds
on St Stevens’s Day he was caught in the Furze
up with the poker down with the thongs
give us thruppence to bury The Wren”
………….(my grandfather…Jack Power)
“With cudgels stout we’d roam about in search of the Dreoilín
we hunted birds thru every furze from Litir to Dooneen
we’d leap for joy beneath the sky, life held no print or plan
when we Boys from Barr na Sráide went huntin for the Wren”
…….(Sigerson Clifford)
Merry Christmas Christy to you and all your family , Thanks for all the beautiful tunes over the year , Looking forward to seeing you in 2023 .
All the very best wishes for the new year

Christy's reply
back of the neck, nostrils, ears and eyebrows please Jimi…leave the top as it is…..
“O the Towns of Kilkee and Kilrush can be seen
from the high rocky slopes of the Cliffs of Dooneen” (Jack McAuliffe)
Merry Christmas, and all the best for 2023. Thank you for talking with us here on this page, it’s always a joy to be in your presence, whether here or at gigs. Thank you for all the music.…
Thanks also to all the contributors here for sharing their musical knowledge and thoughts. I may not be able to contribute much at all but I do appreciate it.
The island it is silent now
But the ghosts still haunt the waves
And the torch lights up a famished man
Who fortune could not save
Did you work upon the railroad
Did you rid the streets of crime
Were your dollars from the white house
Were they from the five and dime
Did the old songs taunt or cheer you
And did they still make you cry
Did you count the months and years
Or did your teardrops quickly dry
Ah, No says he ‘twas not to be
On a coffin ship I came here
And I never even got so far
That they could change my name
Thousands are sailing
Across the Western Ocean
To a land of opportunity
That some of them will never see
Fortune prevailing
Across the Western Ocean
Their bellies full
Their spirits free
They’ll break the chains of poverty
And they’ll dance
In Manhattans desert twilight
In the death of afternoon
We stepped hand in hand on Broadway
Like the first man on the moon
and the blackbird broke the silence
And whistled it so sweet
And in Brendan Behan’s footsteps
We danced up and down the street
Then we said goodnight to Broadway
Giving it our best regards
Tipped our hat to Mister Cohan
Dear old Times Square’s favourite bard
Then we raised a glass to JFK
And a dozen more besides
When I got back to my empty room
I suppose I must have cried
Thousands are sailing
Again across the ocean
Where the land of opportunity
Draws ticket in a lottery
Postcards we’re mailing
Of sky-blue skies and ocean
From rooms the daylight never sees
Where lights don’t glow on Christmas trees
But we dance to the music
And we dance
Thousands are sailing
Across the Western Ocean
Where the land of opportunity
Draws tickets in a lottery
Where ‘er we go we celebrate
The land that makes us refugees
From fear of priests with empty plates
From guilt and weeping effigies
And we dance
Philip Chevron RIP
Darryl Hunt RIP
The two doctors that said Shane wouldn’t make thirty RIP
The great man will be 65 tomorrow please God
Merry Christmas everyone

Christy's reply
I know that Philip would be happy to see his work referenced here…he was a gentle man, deeply immersed in the written, spoken, sung words..its always uplifting to remember him
Fuckin’ Hell Christy! You’ve shared some amazing personal stuff here over the years, however that was beautiful what you shared about Phil Chevron! Thank you!
“Faithful departed”. A song with some lines. I must root out a rendition of it at some stage and tune in.
Christy's reply
“rattled by the Glimmerman, the Bogeyman, the Holy man
living in the Shadow, the shadow of a Gunman
rattled by the coppers in your greasy till
rattled until time stood still”……………………..(P.Chevron)
Christy i gave myself an early present just now, as i stumbled back into Lockdown Session 3 on youtube.
Oh what joy, the chat and singing with Andy, the stories and the songs, rounded off with a sing along to Spancil Hill.
Perhaps crafted initially just to keep us going in grimmer times, these sessions are a tonic for all of us who failed to see you live this year, and probably even for those who did.
They are a jewel.
Thanks to you and Andy.
Rory
Christy's reply
fair play to you Rory..
nice to hear those sessions are still getting a spin
Andy and I enjoyed making them
Rebeccah, I know the answer, not entering an answer here.
Rory, words well put. Ireland’s ‘aparthied’, this traveller situation here. Ewan sang great strong words, “The eastern sky is full of stars…..”.
Here with bags to deliver presents. Now with some, a good bit of money spent. We all should go into some charity websites, maybe more than one, and click on our credit card number & donate some money. There are so many, nearly deserving a couple of pounds for the work they do. I’ll leave yez with that thought.
A very happy Christmas to all.
Hi Christy, last night I listened to the lockdownsessions again. It always feels good and warm, even when the pandemie is over. I can’t thank you enough.
Does Andy have an ambition to sing himself?
I wish you and your family a Merry Christmas and a peacefull new year.

Hello Christy,

Before the Deluge
No time for Love
And a guess bigger than the other two guesses
Faithful Departed
If I win the turkey she will get her own stable with her name on the door and as much nutroast as she can eat. Hope she likes it, I can’t stand the stuff.
Here is my Christmas wish to you and all my friends here. May we all have a peaceful, safe and happy Christmas, and may the new year is kind to us all.

Location: And as Christmas comes send word to all the Ones who watch night disown day. Hawick
Good morning Christmas, i hope that you, Val and Andy have a peaxeful break, filled with song , cheer and hot mugs of tea,
At this time we think of the Trussel Trust and the sad necessity of their wonderful foodbank work, of the RMT and their hardship fund along with other workers such as Nurses and Ambulance staff, whatever happened to state led clapping on the doorstep?
Remembering too those with no home or the traveller, unwanted by ‘society’ and the words of youtself and Ewan McColl
Born at the back of a hawthorn hedge
Where the black hole frost lay on the ground.
No eastern kings came bearing gifts.
Instead the order came to shift.
and
The eastern sky was full of stars
And one shone brighter than the rest
The wise men came so stern and strict
And brought the orders to evict
