I had a grand time last night .such an array of faces every time I opened my eyes..the gaggle was on fire last night…set heading back up toward the 2 hour mark again..a sure sign of contentment
Thats the way I remember The Watersons..in simple heartfelt Black & White…Mike,Norma,Lal and Cousin John….over 50 years since and I first heard them in The Pennines Folk Club in Hyde..then The Bluebell in Hull and sundry other song filled rooms..their legacy lives on with the following generations….
Hello Christy,
Ann Briggs live in your first ever folk club… Wow! Do you remember where it was?
It was a good day yesterday. Me and my Dad are learning how to talk to each other. We never did it when my Mum was alive because she was so talkative.
I did my first interview yesterday tea time. For a podcast with a guy called Will LaDuke in Wisconsin. It went fine. It was all done using zoom, it was just like he was there in the room, chatting with me. I was all set with fully tuned harp and voice to give him a few songs but he said we’d just do the talking and add the songs after. I’d no idea it would be a patchwork. Learning learning learning…. He was really good, great fun to talk to.
I told him about the time I was in a bar in Ireland and someone asked for a Guinness and blackcurrant. What do you call that? Someone asked the barman. Sacrilege! He said.

Annie Briggs subsequently spent time in ireland..travelled a bit with Sweeney’s Men..never met Annie as I was in England at the time
I believe “The Furze” crowd raised the roof last night and waked sleeping Bats !!
Great time was had by all,,, and thank you very much for shout out to Pam.
Pam already making arrangements for first meeting of The Jacksonville, Christy Moore Appreciation Society to take place early February.

Welcome to the January Man and warmest of greetings to you and companeros here.
Also, marking the half century of the iconic first Planxty L.P. And my first visit to Ireland…fell in love with the country immediately and always will be…down the lane from The Yellow Furze.
Kettle on and soon it’s time to wallow in the magic of the black album…
As ever, thanks…

Great to hear from you Dave…and belated seasonal greetings to all 4711ers who languish in Suffragette city and its leafy environs…all ramblers from Manchester Way, cavorters from Dirty Old Town, survivors of the smoky environs of MSG,….just got sad news of the passing of Pete Smith (via Marie Little and Gerry Brady)…so many voices silenced since my time in Manchester but cherished memories linger on…
Kicked off season 57 last night here in The Dark Lagoon…a great Monday Night Gig in The Liberties…an audience that lifted me up and carried me along for almost two hours…steam still rising from T shirt this morning…great to get back out after a two week lay-off, hook up with the crew again and try out a few new songs…the January Man had its annual outing…
Lovely to read your reference to the black Planxty album reaching the half century…what a time we had touring that LP…we had a run of gigs with The Watersons and Mike Harding….I still have a poster somewhere, a silk screen by Mike Miller from Doncaster…we also played MSG, Golden Lion, Free Trade Hall (no sign of Judas)… had a few swift Australian Sherrys in Yates Wine Lodge down by The Shambles…a few vindaloos out on the Curry Mile and the rough lie down on Cheetham Hill..
catch you later Dagreb
Hi Christy, looking forward to Vicar St tonight. Always at the first gig of the year. From the Tryone man who always asks you to play Back Home in Derry. You called me out in Neills bar london a few years back. Mighty stuff. Justin Kelly from Killyclogher in Tyrone
way way back I wandered ,by chance, into a Folk Club…..I’d never been in one before..did not know anything about the English Folk Scene…
Ann Briggs was the featured guest.. what a revealation..I’ve been following the listening crowd ever since
Hello Christy and All.
So it’s tonight. Hope you all have a ball! Well be there’s next week, God willing and a prevailing wind. I’m so looking forward to being in Dublin again for a couple of Christy gigs.
The track Rory mentioned is here https://youtu.be/LF5BXRzVEn4
3 drunken maidens, Strange ways and a lovely short talky bit at the end with a lineup from my dreams.
I’m confused by the cats Rory, do I talk about cats? There’s one looking at me from the top of the wardrobe right now… Big beautiful clawky thing that she is. She loves a cuddle but gets overexcited very quickly and you have to watch the teeth.
My Facebook profile page banner is a medieval rabbit with huge ears playing a zither while an owl listens on.

Someone remembers it. The teeth. Now you see Mr Moore, as someone might may say about ‘you cant say anything’. Hilary and I seem to recall. Did the false teeth or the ‘crown’, fall out? (Nothing can be said you see, in here. Somebody remembers……..)

played it 4 times in total.. a right bleedin kip…Nell’s Cafe more my cup of tea….or The Troubadour or The White Hart on Fulham Broadway
My (autographed) copy of One Voice has the “Three Drunken Maidens” as being acquired (is that a right word?) by Andy Irvine from Maddy Prior. Liam Og added “The Dublin Reel”. They opened with that number in the Ritz Cinema, Athlone, it’s now fifty years ago. 1973. 50 years ago. Dont ask where they’ve gone to. Yet I vividly recall those concerts. One in ’73, another in ’74. These years that spin around faster and faster.

I loved the buzz when Liam tore into The Dublin Reel at the end of 3 Drunks..that was our first Single and it went to No 3 in the charts..Gaybo invited us on to the Late Late…when we came to record the first (Black) album the track was not included…
I recall those Athlone gigs clearly….
Both myself and Andy gigged with Tim Hart & Maddy Prior (pre Planxty & Steeleye Span) …..they were a really good duo….they stayed with me in Yorkshire and Tim returned the hospitality when I played in St Alban’s

That’s a great Ann Briggs video, Sandy Denny does a fantastic version of ‘Blackwaterside’.
Here’s the very best rendition of ‘Three Drunken Maidens’. Vintage Planxty.
