Hope ok to post. Wally Page sat with me for a while one evening and we had a recorded chat about his life in music and much more. It’s not something Wal did too often, so it was a joy to get his story, or part of it, on a podcast. I hope readers here might enjoy listening. He really gave a lot in this, and we included lots of his great songs. Here’s to Wal..he was loved x https://open.spotify.com/episode/7pbS3xY03hfFcqNGrGS3lg?si=AkCZWQzbQwiQRVSXyKhL9Q

Our old Buddy is sadly missed..great that you did that interview with him..
the national media ignored his passing, just as they neglected his beautiful music
Ireland had a fabulous game on Saturday. You and Scotland are going to take some beating. They beat us fair and square, and with the roof shut too. No swirliing wind for missing goals.
Italy, brilliant! Can’t wait to see them in the World Cup.
Hello Christy,
Loving that recording of Sally Brown from the Abbey Tavern, “off you go then Andy….”. A bit of natural harmonising going on. Lovely.
I done remember a time when we didn’t have television. 3 channels, buttons on the front, or a twiddly dial for tuning. Then channel 4 turned up.. At my grandma’s we spent a lot of time watching the test card. There was a weird scary girl on it. Someone in Manchester gave me a little square black and white one with a dial on the front. And a record player. No idea what happened to them, I must have passed them on to another student. The girl across the corridor got a computer as I was leaving. She must have been rich.
I’m ashamed to say I haven’t watched Happy Valley. It was filmed right here. We’ve got all popular all of a sudden. A Marvel film was filmed in the Piece Hall recently. Whatever happened to “back of beyond…”?
Rebecca

as well as being a gripping 5 part drama…Happy Valley filmed Halifax and environs beautifully…
gave me a longing to visit my old stomping ground again…maybe drop in to The Upper George before heading down to The Shay, back out to Causeway Foot later for Yorkshire Pud and Gravy ..
but its all a pipe dream….but then again…maybe back to Bradshaw Tavern Folk Club..resident singers included Denis Sabey, Roger Knowles and Alasdair Cameron…we always had a reet good do
I can remember being off “sick” in the mid 70’s Ed and having just got the “pipe” tv in Dublin, due to a “well connected” uncle, i used to watch the Andy Stewart TV show!!!
Time was I used to get ‘Johnny Cope’ mixed up with that ‘Horseman’ song, both songs got an rendition from Planxty. Johnny Cope involved a battle, Scots and English, apparently the Scots, on the battlefield, decided to sleep in one morning and the English rumbled the still sleeping Scots, many of the Scots just got up and ran and made their escape, people got scapegoated. Here’s the ‘link’, you see the research got done, at Waterloo men from Scottish regiments were heard singing it. Hence a link to Napoleon.
Christy's reply
I always loved Liam’s 5 part Jig at the end of Johnny Cope….I used to batter the drum on that one….
This and that rendition of Yarmouth Town’, are great. I recall back in my young days sussing ideas or notions of fellas pulling strings and a reply by one guy who has it, “I have all I want without being wed…” that some ‘activities’ were going ahead, especially they being sailors in a foreign port.
“Oh Napoleon Bonaparte, you’re the cause of my woe…..” is that the ‘Bonny Light Horseman’? I think it is. I’m one of a class, we sat in a school room, windows shut against noise and dust as an old Napoleonic fort was unceremoniously demolished by the local authority. It was opposite the school. A few around the midlands still survive; they were built to repel a possible invasion by Napoleon. I’ve occasionally thought of those lines on the French dictator where the constant noise and dust intruded on everything, I’d reckon these days the kids would have been sent home!

in our National School all we could see out the window was the looming side of the Parish (RC) Church…..thats where we were baptized, confessioned, communioned, confirmed, controlled and consigned to the buning pits of hell…
…..still they keep on ringin the bell…but how the flock has faltered
Timoney Tanks were all the go back then….
I was drunk and slurring on that intro….
I see that and I’m relieved to be sober..
,,,but that said, thanks for posting
Was just rummagin’ ’round t’interweb Christy! And ended up here! If ever anyone ever needs cheering up and a giggle! This’ll do it!! Then ye listen and the harmonies are stunning! This and Bonny Light Horseman! Should Planxty a done more of this? The Voice Squad woulda been proud!
Hello Christy,
I’m lying here this morning thinking about what o write. So much going on in the world and this place talks about a lot of it.
The right wing scare me and I’d never thought about how the layers of it work till you mentioned it yesterday.
A couple of people went to kill rhino’s for their horns and got eaten by lions. I guess, given its chance, nature brings balance.
I’ve got about as much gravel in my voice as Bonnie Tyler. Rock music, no probs. Looking forward to the pure sweet notes as they slowly return. The bone clacking is getting more reliable.
What’s everybody got on their turntable right now?
Rebecca

Patsy Cline, The Watersons,Tony Capstick,Tommy Potts, …..then its back to the Atkin or the Tak….some new verses on the way, some old ones needing a lick of refreshing polish…still reeling in delight from Cardiff Arms & Twickenham..still recovering from the trauma of Happy Valley
G’day you mob:
There’s an intriguing debate going on over here on a political front…
Do we give First Nations people a say in how this country is run, taking into consideration their wants & needs whilst showing respect & tolerance & acceptance ?
Sounds like a no-brainer don’t it?
Oh no not on your Nellie…the landed gentry & their lackeys are fiercely up in arms – how dare we acknowledge the original owners of the land?!
So much for “the country of the fair go”
Rant over – for now…
Christy, I know you covered Dusty Diamantina & some other Oz songs – have you had a crack at John Williamson’s “Raining on The Rock” – beautiful song about a beautiful First Nations holy place
Hope you’re all rude with health,
Regards

The right lurks dangerously around the globe, behind them, facists wait their chance, while behind them, nazis sharpen knives with ever burning hatred and bile…we must stand firm in whatever way we can.. be aware of the danger, oppose and deny them with diligence and solidarity…any little thing we can do in our everyday lives..
Hello Christy, for Christmas I bought my wife and I tickets to your June 30th concert in Killarney. We just booked our flights to Dublin so to say we are excited would be a huge understatement. We are just listening to your interview on the Love and Courage podcast. We will see you soon, take care.
Little did that young gasun with the horrid thirst know how many more great songs he’ld bring to the national repertoire
in the intervening fifty-five years and continues to do so.
“Smoking Lemon 7s through a broken bottle neck …”
Easy said to sing in your own accent, write about what you know and where you’re from. But A Lazarus Soul are one of the rare groups to achieve just that with songs like the above
Long Balconies, Black and Amber, Funeral Sessions,
and No Hope Road.
All from the one album The D they put between the R & L.
“Unbelievable” as Jocky Hansen used to say.

The Irish are our favourites
They’ll take some beating
Hamstrings strained, locks like cranes
There’s beer stuffed in their faces
There’s agony and ecstacy below in the six nation races.
Hey Finn boy give it a smack ,make us cheer, and through she goes.
It’s there you’ll see young kids with smiles, old men with coloured scarves on,
Ladies shouting on their boys , with more hot air than a flying Scotsman,
The French are blue, hope England are too, the Welsh want Barry John back,
More agony and ecstacy that Caesar saw in Rome sure.
Hoggy’s galloping through the tackles, Sexton tries to catch him
Look at big itoji jump, he’s a heavy ballet dancer,
To win at last, Scots must be fast
Long studs and thirsty crowds won’t stop us,
Winner is sport , whoevers crowned, the 6 nations is the top stuff,
Hey Finn lad give it a smack, make us cheer and through she goes.
To the tune of the ballad of ruby walsh…..
