Hello Christy,
It sounds like it was a, cracker of a show last night. I prefer Mrs Lemon 7s to Mrs Dark Eyed Sailor. I wish they had names. Mrs, Dark Eyed Sailor sounds like a bit of a drama queen, and I’ve no idea how you keep hold of half a ring. I’d have lost it within a week. Lovely song though. I love a happy ending.
No wonder your brother does a good impression of you. You must have at least half the same vocal chords.
I tried recording a drone yesterday. It sounded bloody awful, like some kind of weird motorbike. Back to the bosom of the harp. She’s gentle and kind.

easy to lose half a ring in these times of mass consumerism….a different story way back then..that half ring might havebeen her sole valueable possession..the other half in a satchel hanging from his neck as he ploughed the raging main…
Christie,
Your concert tonight was the highlight of our incredible first trip to Ireland! Thank you for the shout out and dedication of Black is the Colour (I was so shocked to hear my name that I squealed like a kid on Christmas morning, and NO ONE ever pronounces my name correctly!)
I recently retired from public education in the US and the trip was to celebrate the next chapter in my life with my boyfriend.
We throughly enjoyed the show. You’re an inspiration and fantastic storyteller.
I’ll remember this night always!
A grateful fan,
Deanna from Detroit
What a feckin show tonight. Magic magic magic. Lyra McKee is an incredible song, one of your finest in along time.
I won’t lie we shed a tear listening to it. What a set list what a gig. Sorry I am as high as a kite!!
Christy's reply
Still buzzin myself after that gig…..I’ve watched snooker, John McGahern’s “Amongst Women”, played my guitar, read the paper, but no sign of Morpheus
Just home from the Derry show. Unbelievable! First time seeing you live and you sounded exactly like you do on CD! Class show, class voice and class songs. Particularly loved the Lyra McKee song. Are there plans to have it released?
Christy's reply
2 Strabane posts in a row….fair play….I last played Strabane in 1984….good Paul Brady country..
Just out of tonight’s show ( which I gratefully got tickets for after asking on here !) and a stitch in time was the wife’s favourite but, honestly, I was thinking lemons 7s could work well at this point of the gig and, for me, it resonated in a city that has had its fair share of hardships. Thanks Christy for giving us a night that will long live in our memory.
Christy's reply
sound Tommy…its a great song, written by Briany Brannigan of “A Lazarus Soul”..very good band..check ’em out on YouTube
Thank you for another wonderful gig tonight – in fine voice as always. Loved “How Long” and the memories of that wonderful day with the Dalai Lama – maybe his next visit will be “Newbridge or nowhere”. I see Dublin GAA have presented special jerseys to the families of the 48 ahead of next week’s hearing. Hope they finally get some element of justice or closure. It’s been too long. Great to hear Scapegoats and Minds Locked Shut on the set list tonight too and the beautiful song of Lyra – let us always remember them. Roll on Friday.
Christy's reply
I was delighted to hear that Joe Brolly will be representing the Families of The Stardust Fire Victims in the upcoming Tribunal….also heard a new Podcast today called “Free State” which features Joe and his co-presenter Dion Fanning…
also Discovered that the Dalai Lama has Kildare roots…..he has promised to come home the next time Kildare get to an All-Ireland Final…
Good Man John…its a pure joy to be back in your home Town…. Back Home in Derry
Hi Christy! Ned Farrell’s young lad Barry took me along last night to the Savoy Düsseldorf to see your fella Luka. He was in top form and gave us a great night. He had a go at imitating your voice as he told the story of writing Chicago after your brother Andy hit the emigrant trail. And we had a great chat after as himself and Barry O’Farrell took a trip down memory lane, through Dowling’s and Downings. Great stories. He told us too that he was the start act, at the age of 17, for Planxtys first gig.
Christy's reply
great to hear that the Young Brother is lashin out the songs in the land of Toten Hosen.
always good to have mention of Ned Farrell here…Ned was the first Bodhrán player that myself and Donal Lunny encountered….he was a lovely man and a mainstay of the great Music scene in Prosperous,County Kildare…..
Precious memories from those stellar days…..Jack Reddy & Julia, Paddy Kenny, Pat Dowling, Mickey Carroll, Frank Burke on Fiddle, Gerry on Accordeon, The Rynne Family, Jim Casey(Roadstone Cowboy), Pa & Mickey Bagnall ( The Bord na Móna Fusiliers)Nan McCormack on Spoons,
Mention of Desmond Egan in here a while ago. Purcell Auctioneers sold four signed prints of poetry by Des. By the way, before the Lillywhites claim Des for themselves, Des is a true-blue Athlonian, Connaught side. I kept a watch out to see how much the prints would go for. They went for in and around the quoted or estimated price.
Christy's reply
We would never dream of it…..Man of Words, Man of the Shannon, Man of the World…wherever he chose to hang his hat …in Veritas
There’s a quare buzz in here atm..I’m reminded of the line from Phil Coulter; “There was music there, in the Derry air..” Safe travels to all..good juju pending..

Hi Christy
Looking forward to having you ‘Back home in Derry’ tonight, any chance of a verse or two of The juice of the Barley? My dad used to sing it but could never remember the words. 😂Anyway enjoy Doire
This is the Day…..
Swallows arriving in the North West… and they’re not alone …. reports of imminent arrivals from The Kingdom of Kerry , The Rebel County , Wicklow (the garden)…..and even talk of a New York contingent…. a gaggle , nearly enough to be called a gathering !!!
Welcome , welcome everyone……

Howdy All! Isn’t it Mary Black on the Dark Eyed Sailor, with Paul Brady and Declan McNelis. If I remember correctly she did an amazing version of Anachie Gordon that night?
Hello Christy,
Loved the video posted by John of Doire of the Dalai Lama. What a human being, it’s like looking into the universe in one person. I feel so lucky to have seen and heard him speak. Your singing was a beautiful response to it.
You know Google seems to get cleverer and cleverer. I put Hilary’s post into Google, the whole of it, and it translated it straight away. I loved Kerry when I spent some time staying in Castlegregory, up the Conor Pass, in fog as thick as soup and also glorious clarity the following day. It was January, right after Vicar street. I have pictures on the wall that I took there.
The female singer in the dark eyed sailor. On the early years recording Christy introduces the song by saying, “myself, Declan and Mary will have a go at the Dark Eyed Sailor”.

“one half of the ring did young William show
she ran distracted in grief and woe”
never understood that second line..I always thought it should have read
” she ran home and put the kettle on”
if she was so distraught at his return why did she marry him
I keeps it simple and just sings it ….over to the mudcats
Well Christy.
What an amazing few days you have ahead as you travel to the banks of the Foyle. Wishing you every good wish, as you deliver your music and Songs to the good people of Derry and beyond. The first time I crossed the peace Bridge will always resonate with me, as we moved into a new Ireland where we can all live in harmony.
As they say in the Theatre world “break a leg”, and enjoy every moment………It will be special.
Best Regards.

Me and my mummy are travelling from belfast to see you in derry this friday 21st april. The last time i seen you was in my university at the time in st.marys on the falls road. Me and my brother and sister have been raised on songs and stories and your music for many years now. Unfortunately last year we lost my granda, billy gilvary (my mothers father) he was a big fan of your music. So much so, when we bought him an alexa speaker a few years ago, he near fought with it when alexa wouldnt play “the contender by christy moore” a memory and song i hold so deer. I would be forever grateful if you could play the contender in his memory. Many thanks, Ciara!
Christy's reply
its been off the list these past few years…. I’ll see if I can polish it up before friday…truth is..its unlikely..but we’ll see what happens….that Alexa can be a hoor of a yoke
I seen on twitter it’s Lyra Mc Kee’s anniversary of her death today. God rest her the poor kid.
I wasn’t aware of her that much until I heard your song in the NCH a few weeks ago. I’ve been following the comments and I agree the song is a natural beauty and well done to you again for keeping someone like that names alive. Look forward to seeing you in Cavan.

Dark-Eyed Sailor. Just had a listen, the ‘On the Road’ version, live at Abbey Tavern. Who’s the quite young-sounding female vocalist? I dont want to put names out here. Am wondering. Gawd, those recorded programmes are 43 years old.
Christy's reply
methinks it is young Mary Black…..I first heard her sing in Castlebar with a Band called General Humbert…she stilled the night and won the hearts of many
That road to Derry, I think that line re: Nelson Mandela asking ‘did Kildare get out of Leinster?’ it could be an apt line nowadays for somebody, after an enforced absence, to ask: is that road to Derry finished yet?! Ah maybe if all this American money promised if certain parties and individuals to get talking across a table to each other we might see some cement poured onto that road. Dont bet heavily on it; I’d say dont bet on it at all. Give it another generation. As for the Derry road. Unless we trot northwards ourselves with the cement. I’m thinking of Christy H and his song: “Dont forget your Shovel”.
