Hi C. My CD du jour is Folk Tale, on a journey I will often listen on repeat. From the opening lines ” Come with me to the Island..” it offers a slice of Irish life from Amsterdam to Ballydine and onto Tyrone. From the magic of Easter Snow to the tragedy of Tiles and Slabs, no doubt you have the finger on the pulse of our society. GRMMA. Beir bua agus beannacht. H
Hello Christy,
I’ve been watching a few of Chris Woods videos. https://youtu.be/hMFNbFCH7Yg
Don’t know what to say. It needs some thinking about. He’s caught the flatness of it all with his voice so well. And the video is so grey. It’s relentless.
The dupedness of it, at least we know that we need bees. People are not so important.
When the coronation was coming round I felt it and I hated it. Trying to dupe us into thinking we had some importance. It’s not for me. They can f**k off.
So it made an impression.
Sorry for dumping this mindstream here.
I’m not going to delete it before hitting send because it’s how I really feel.
I often forget about RTE archives and then dive into the history and quirky events that are preserved…
Now via ITMA, comes the news that tons of Irish music is being made available, somewhere in the labyrinth of http://www.rte.ie/archives it’ll be a fun search and worthwhile for sure!
Hey Christy!! Massive fan looking forward to seeing you in Leisureland Galway on Sept 1st 🙂 one small problem, I need one more ticket.. any spare going in the back there?! I can’t get an extra one anywhere and I’m hoping you can do something for me 🙂

It’s been a while since I dropped by here! I hope that things are well with you and yours.
We were so looking forward to coming over to see you at Westport Castle Court tomorrow.
Unfortunately we’re not able to travel as Anne, my wife, is not well. We hope to see you in. Castlebar in October.
I wonder whether you might be kind enough to dedicate a song to Anne tomorrow? If you’re able to do that then any song would be lovely but ‘Nancy Spain’, ‘Natives’ or ‘Joxer’ or would be the best!
Members of Anne’s family, Gerardine, Michelle, Stephen and Philip will be there enjoying the gig.
Thank you Christy if you’re able to do that. We won’t hear it but I’ll tell Anne about it (she has advanced early onset Alzheimer’s) and she would be thrilled.
And finally… any chance of us seeing you over in this part of the world soon/again? Your gigs at the RFH are the best, most joyous gigs that we’ve been lucky enough to see.
Hello Christy,
One in a million by Chris Woods. Thankyou for pointing it out. He describes it so beautifully. Strange how these rings get so tangled into our emotions.
His characters are so real.
“oh William, William, I have gold in store
For my dark eyed sailor”
I read a story about a women who lost her ring while gardening.
Years later she was pulling up some carrots and one of them was wearing it.
They find their way magically back to us sometimes.
That’s a great charity you’re supporting in July.
The hare and lofty pheasant are plain to be seen
Making homes for their young round the cliffs of Dooneen.

Today is the sixth anniversary of the loss of 22 people and many seriously injured by the bomb at Manchester Arena.
I regularly call into the memorial at Victoria Station and have just looked at online pictures of those who were lost that night.
I’m also playing Liam O’Flynn s brilliant ‘ The Given Note’…just as I was looking at the 22 memorial pictures, track 4 of the album started…haunting beauty of ‘ Farewell to Govan’. Sometimes the power of music takes me by surprise …

a shocking memory of manchester arena….thank you for reminding us
Hi Christy,
The record fair pitch up 2-3 times a year down at the commercial boat club. Always gets a decent crowd of the young, the old, the brave and the bold. And you always find some treasure.
Hard luck to Leinster. One conversion away from glory.
Near impossible angles. Would Johnny have nailed either ?
The hurling in Munster is off the scale.
Another weekend and a final to go.
Only certainty is that Clare will be in it and Waterford wont.

Hello Christy,
Here’s a happy song for a happy morning.
A couple of months ago I lost my mother’s wedding ring. It had been on my finger and then suddenly it wasn’t there. I was so upset. She’d worn it for 56 years and my dad had given it to me the day after she died.
Yesterday I was rearranging my workroom to fit more books in and I lifted a candle lantern off one of the shelves. The ring was right there, underneath the lantern. I’ve no idea how it got there but I am so grateful that it has come back to me.
Our old friends from The Record Fair we’re back in town.
Picked up two pieces of treasure The Spirit of Freedom and
an album you don’t meet everyday …
Moving Hearts – The Dark End of the Street.
Nearly forty years old and between them have five of my all time favorites. Part of the national repertoire at this stage.
Back home in Derry

Lovely hurling from down in Munster today

That Tipp / Limerick game yesterday was a hurling classic…a wonderful sporting occasion….Saturdays European Rugby Final did not go our way but Leinster v La Rochelle was a game of the highest order….Sorry for Leo’s defeat, (but good to see Rodge still scheming and leading his troops into battle)
Happy to read of your Record Fair finds….where did it take place ?…was it well attended ?…..
A draw today for the Lillywhite, v Sligo, away.
Naas racecourse living up to its name as the punters’ graveyard. Face the puckout, 5:15 race, hardly mentioned.
Hi C. I ‘m glad you were lucky enough to catch the Young ‘Uns last night and that you enjoyed their gig, they describe themselves as ” accidental folkies ” I was lucky to catch them at the Cambridge Folk Club on a free night during your UK Tour in April 2015 in between your Cambridge Corn Exchange and Cardiff gigs. I just saw a poster stuck on a railing in the city and took a chance. It was in a small packed room upstairs in a pub and I could n’t believe their sounds, their energy and enthusiasm . It was probably my first experience of one of those legendary English Folk Clubs and it was fantastic, I think it cost a fiver or something !! I ‘ve been to similar folk clubs in Glasgow since. I see there are on an extensive UK tour playing both Cropredy and Sidmouth Festivals they are certainly worth going to IMHO, but no further Irish gigs. ( Ed Coyle I think there is room for all genres, even if they are not to your personal taste !) Beir bua agus beannacht. H P. S Congrats Mayo !!
I’d a listen Rebeccah. No thanks. They sound like the King Singers. “Folk” or acapella. Nah! (Who remembers the King Singers?) If they’re out to ‘break America’ by bus, I’d reckon they’d have to have a can of red diesel along with an ample supply of beans and fishfingers. Even cheaper than pizza!

You dont seem to have much time for The Young ‘Uns….lest anyone might dismiss their work on the back of your “dismissal” I should mention that their songs last Saturday night were engrossing and beautifully performed with passion, musicality and humour..
among others…they sang beautifully about
Lyra McKee
Jack Merritt ( the young social worker murdered on London bridge)
The Battle of Cable St ( in Oswald Moseley time)
Three Dads Walking…(advocates of Suicide prevention in Schools)
Tiny Notes..(how a young girl saved 30 lives)
Tim Burman…( lost on Pan Am 103)
their latest album is called “tiny notes”….their songs are ,for me, what folk song (traditional/revival/contemoirary) is all about…available from the shop at their website
I also recognise that your opinion is as valid as my own…
Hello Christy,
Thank you for the tip off about the Young Uns. Just been having a look and listen. Lovely acapella stuff, it’s just my cup of tea. https://youtu.be/WkwHWY4qNFU
Their schedule looks like the one you described Planxty having. Buzzing up and down the country like there’s no tomorrow. I hope they get a day off sometimes.
I’m working very hard on Dalesman’s litany. I dropped it a 3rd a while back and it’s made all the difference. I was almost happy with it yesterday. I’ll post up a recording if I can get a reasonable one.
After everyone had taken their cut from my recording of Scarborough Fair I ended up with 73p of the original pound I thought I’d earned. 201 listens it got, and very quickly too.
What’s the difference between a folksinger and a large pizza?
The pizza can feed a family of four..
Strangely enough I’m feeling very happy with how things are going.
Happy birthday to Dave of Eccles on Hawick.
I was one of the two Newfoundlanders at your concert in Limerick on Friday night along with my good pal Tom Donahue. I just wanted to say what a treat it was to see you live in your element and we will be forever grateful for the most unexpected shout out ! Please keep doing what you are doing …bringing joy to so many !
Dear Christy I hope this message finds you well. I find myself in Singapore. The last time I was here there was a 4711ers gathering in Lisdoon which I missed due to volcanic eruption over Iceland. I missed some craic 13 years ago. Any chance of an encore? There’s always time for County Clare. X
Dear christy,
I love the way that you have kept dagrab company for half a century, may he have many happy returns, he really is a top man and i miss sourghdough toast and cups of warm black tea with the suffragette city’s finest.

In many ways I’ve never left the 60s, but will leave MY 60s in a few days…cue reflections on the passing decades…
Certainly more ups than downs (some of the latter being very hard)and several episodes of good fortune – often music related e.g. Being in my local folk club in 1971 when you landed in for a ‘ floor spot ‘…
I try to find new music and enjoy it when I do, but the old ‘mates’ are always close at hand… As I’m rambling here, ‘ Seven Psalms’ , the new Paul Simon L.P. Is having its debut.I love his work and am reassured that (similar to Graceland)there’s superb playing that will be unravelled and enjoyed over time…
Thanks for your company over half a century plus… So much depth to your varied output – and always good to chew the fat with another ‘ man of May’…
