Dear Christy..
I just startet to pack my suitcase, because on Friday I will fly over to Cork,
just to see you on Saturday at the Marquee.
It is very exciting, since I have never been in Cork before.
In 1960 I did make a short stop at Cobh harbour though, on the big ship SS America on a trip to New York, where I had a job as an aupair girl. That was my first introduction to Ireland, From the vendors, that came to the ship in small boats, I bought a big white scarf with a colourful map of Ireland printed on it and a beautiful Aran Sweater. I treasured them a long, long time, took them back to Germany with me, when I returned two years later…
Later I returned to Ireland many times . In 1966 I marched with the parade to commemorate the Easter Rising. went to a concert of the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem and spent nice evenings at the Abbey Tavern at this time. That made me fall in love with Irish music and songs until now.
I met only friendly, kind and lovable people in Ireland.. My son studied one semester at Trinity College, so there was plenty of reason to visit again and again..
And then I heard you first time live at the Alte Oper in Frankfurt many years ago..Absolute Highlight for me..your songs accompany my live ever since…
Now for this weekend, Evelyn and Barbara will come again with me to hear you, like they did in Charleville 2019 and in Dublin NCH last May and in Vicar Street last November…We look forward to the gig very much..
Dear Christy, thank you for all the love and energy you give during your performance, it is just heartwarming from the beginning to the end…
Love and Peace,
Trudy

I always liked playing Alte Opera Frankfurt,…..a great venue with the added attraction of visiting my Sister-in-Law who lived in Darmstadt…..there are a number of references in your post where our paths crossed…I played once in The Abbey Tavern in Howth..it was back in 1965….I was given an audition but failed …heard The Clancy’s and Tommy Makem in Dublin in the mid 60s…it was a defining moment for me and remains the best Concert I have ever attended… hope you Three have a good trip to Cork.its a great City
Over decades I’ve been grateful to you for many things- none more than you flagging up ‘ O’ Donohue’s Opera’…and further gratitude to the film makers, that it’s in black and white…left to my own devices I doubt I’d have found it amongst the YouTube abundance .
I’m living in the past more and more and this has transported me…
Back to the early days of BBC Radio One and the bleeping and banning of ‘Seven Drunken Nights’. And to my early visits to Ireland, starting in Spring ’73, where I’m glad to say I soaked up the joys as shown in this film…
Thanks, Christy and enjoy the big tent…(and that returns me to you and Mr Harding in the Platt Fields marquee…over a half century on – treasured memories)

Christy's reply
Dave ..good to hear from you…but a tad confusing for this 78 y.o. head… I assumed it was from Rory until you mentioned Platt Fields in your final sentence !!!
Might you mention United City or Suffragette City in future opening line so I can engage my Mancunian receptor straight off…
reading news from Hawick and Platt fields require different hearing aids !!!
Doolin Festival was superb and there was a Mancunian presence….
prepping now for The Marquee..
Hows things in Manchester..are you playing.. any Folk Clubs on the go..back in ’67 there were 4 clubs every Thursday night…The Beggarmen in City Centre, The Pennine Folk in Hyde, Jack & Mavis on Kingsway nr Middleton . Toni & Arthur out in Didsbury ( run by Pete Wilmot)
Oh Hell! I’m sorry. Is that how my last post really came across? I really liked the film, the humour, the music, everything. I was just trying to go a bit deeper. Please delete the post, if it you like.

nothin to be sorry about at all..I’m just joshin along here
Hi Christy
The gig was in the black box (a stage yourself and Declan have
graced in the past). Roseanne Reid a daughter of The Proclaimers Craig Reid opened proceedings. Her short setincluded a fine version of a Miranda Lambert song called bluebird.
Next up Jim Murray and Jack Maher joined Sharon Shannon
who makes playing the box look so easy. But is probably the only one who can hit the notes she does. And always with that smile. Which Jack sang. Jim told a tale about Van The Man,Bob Dylan and a private jet – probably not true.
Then Steve Earle took to the stage solo and acoustic.
Launched into The Pogues If I Should Fall From Grace with God. Followed up with some classics from his Giutar Town and Copperhead Road albums. For the rest of the show he shared songs and stories from his vast repertoire. How he had a bit of a wobble in the early nineties. But is proud to be clean and sober for twenty eight years. Spoke of his own son’s tragic overdose. Gave a nod to his three heroes Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clarke and Jerry Jeff Walker. Told a tale of The West Virginia mining disaster – It’s about blood. Finished up with Fort Worth Blues.
And yes the trio joined him for an encore of The Galway Girl. And yes we all clapped out of time and sang out of tune. And
no doubt they headed off to The Crane or Tigh Coli for an after show show. How do Prince ? We headed out the gap – bet.
Christy's reply
Now you’re talking..
thanks for that..
a great description of a special gig…gotta check out Roseanne Reid….I’ve clear memories of nights in the Black Box….a great gig room ( but with one major drawback)…great to hear that Sharon is still delivering the goods, met Steve Earle briefly once at a Country Music Festival in Mullingar…..would love to have caught his gig as you described it….thanks for your summary
Hello Christy,
I’m really not built for this weather.
Thankyou for the prod (or two)… I watched O’Donohue’s Opera. Best thing for me, the burglar outfit at the beginning. I wonder how he got caught…!
Lots to talk about, don’t know what to say first. It made me think of early Monty Python. All the gallows humour, parody and 2 dimensional characters. It almost needed to be a cartoon. Was there a single scene without a bottle of Guinness in it?
I watched it once. Missed Seamus Ennis, I need to watch it again.
I wonder why this didn’t develop. Lack of money? I’m thinking about Reel in the Flickering Light and Musgrave. There must be lots of films in them. What about Wandering Aengus, it could be gorgeous. Maybe best left alone? Once it’s on film maybe you’ve stopped it changing? I don’t know.

Meself and Mrs B were very lucky to be at the opening concert of the Galway folk festival.

Hi Christy, myself and my friend Alice Collins have been listening to your tunes since we were small. We would love to get tickets to the concert in Cork or Kerry since we missed out on the chance to get the tickets and it’s very sad indeed. It’s my birthday on the 30th of June and I’d love nothing more than to spend the evening listening to you. We love the trad and we’re playing in a few pubs ourselves in Killarney the night of the 30th. If we could see you that night it’d be class altogether. Thanks so much for the lovely music and hopefully we’ll get to see you soon. Bye for a while, Thanks, Abaigeal.

Hi Christy,
two great gigs, two great locations – and you raised the roof twice!!!
Doolin was a superb festival, perfect weather, well organized, relaxed atmosphere, very nice people and of course brilliant musicians (my personal favourite discovery was the Dutch band Boxin’ the Vox) – all in all: still buzzing.
Hope to see you again in Vicar St towards the end of the year. 🙂
