Thank you Hillary and Pat. Maureen Dowd’s column in today’s NYT ended with a reference to the word Amadan, and as most of us here have done, ascribed it to the Gaelic language. I must warn the subject of the column regards someone we’d like to forget.
We had some pretty good GAA players and matches here, back in the day, but that was the old game.
Coincidentally, I only just downloaded for listen Piper and Poet by the late Liam Og and Seamus Heaney.

Hi All. some interesting radio programmes on RTE Radio 1 on Mon 7th Aug, if I heard the advert correctly Ronan Collins presents music and an interview with Christy at 12 noon and before that at 11am they’ re broadcasting a gig by the late Liam Og and Seamus Heaney from their Piper and Poet gig perhaps to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the passing of Seamus this month. BrendanC in NY as you probably know there are different dialects so Gaelige is the language but in Munster it’s usually referred to as Gaolainn, but I defer to CS here who is the only native speaker I know on this forum. There’s a few to come from that team down below! The town will climb the mountain and look “ouer” the sea! Sean Garvey, Sigerson, Jack O’Shea, Maurice Fitz, Bryan Sheehan, as we row over to The great Micko on Valentia! Pure beauty!

Hi Christy – I tried to paste a picture of a poster from the 1991 Fleadh in Finsbury Park, but the tech has me beat. Anyway, what an array of great talent you headlined. Do you have any memories of the event?

I played 3 Finsbury Fleadhs for Vince Power..they were great events…I remember meeting The Cranberries there when they were starting out..what a singer was Dolores….my fave memory is the day it was pissing rain for hours.. as I was announced the Sun came out and shone bright…the steam was rising off the listeners…having been drenched all day I think they associated my arrival with the improvement in the weather….
Finsbury was special for me… I used to hang out in a Galway Squat at the back of The Finsbury Park Tavern a few decades earlier
Talking of borders, Todmorden lies in West Yorkshire now, but it used to be in both Lancashire and Yorkshire, with the border passing right through the middle of the Town Hall. I think we have a resident of that fair town here. She may know more.
Christy's reply
a (late) brother of The Pecker Dunne used to live in Todmorden…I think I played there once
Hello Christy,
“craic and morán pleasure” we need lots of it, the more the merrier, and that goes for versions of songs too, for me. If your version of a song is so much of a challenge to the original that some people need to react aggressively, then that’s a big message. It sounds like you’re doing a great job. Maybe too good for some people…
We’re off to Settle again today to see Steve’s pipes teacher. It’s siling it down here so I’ll be drinking coffee inside the Old Naked Man Cafe. I usually sit outside but the coffee will get diluted if I do that….
I’ve got to try to change a string on the harp when we get back. The F below middle C went a few weeks ago. I put on a new one but made a mess of it. It’s fraying round the top and looks like it could go any minute, so I need to sort it out before I tune the thing and get some practice in.
Lots of rugby on today too.
I’ll stop waffling on now.
Hi christy, in glasgow yesterday i walked, during lunch break, to see and photo billy connolly’s 2 huge building-side murals, some man.
Anyway i was listening to roddy frame on my way down last night, and his song ‘postcard’ talks about the golden gate bridge. I think the only cm mention is of that bridge is on ‘the way pierce turner sings’, and that is an incredible baring of your soul, top man. What memories do you have ,if any, of playing over there?
Rory
Christy's reply
all my memories from out west are a bit scrambled…crosses the bridge ocer and back to a gig in Sausalito..sailed under it another day with songsters from Marin County who had a monster yacht anchored in their back garden plus a cellar full of the finest schnappes chianti porter ouzu pernod vodka and sambucco…and I loved it so
My apologies … the Carrickdale is of course in Dundalk. I’m sorry if anyone rolled their eyes at the Canadian!! Lol!
Christy's reply
No apology needed….its actually in Ravensdale between Dundalk & Newry…. always a great night in The Carrickdale…. its right on the Border….the dressing room ( for the time being) is still in the UK ( but not for much longer) yet the stage is in the Irish Republic… I gotta pass thru Customs on my way to start the gig..an added difficulty is moving in and out of Europe before and after the gig..I usually suffer jet lag after playing The Carrickdale…but its the culture, the pure culture that keeps us coming back….”Up Down”
the Cork gig..thats a different story..down The Rebel its all drisheens, beamish and mackerel….the Opera House has totally relaxed since it first opened….it was a bit up itself at first but soon had the edges knocked off it with Panto, Ballads, Jazz,Film and now Two Norries Podcasts… a lot of the Opera crowd have to go the Wexford now to rattle the jewels and air the fur coats (with no knickers)…we loves the Cork Opera House now girl..there do be almighty capers and heaps of craic altogether..”Up De Rebel”
and while we’re at it…”Up The Lilys”…Glen Ryan assures me we are going for the One-In-A-Row next year..(and its not the O’Byrne Cup he’s talkin about)
Morning/Evening Christy
A few years ago we were in the north visiting family and we were able to see you in concert at the Carrickdale Hotel in Drogheda. You called us out during the concert, which was a thrill plus just super fun!
I’m very excited that I was able to get two tickets to Cork and I’ve surprised Bernard with a quick trip to Ireland to attend the concert with his uncle, Tony. His Uncle, who is getting up in age, has never seen you in concert and is super excited to be doing this with his nephew!
What a great experience for both and November can’t come soon enough!
Take care and thanks for this great family opportunity!!
Sylvia Warnke
Christy's reply
You’re getting me excited here Sylvia and I dont even know Uncle Tony but lets not rush the coming of November..lets cool the Jets and try and squeeze every bit of life we can from the time left,Easy Does It….Vancouver, what a great city..between the Mountains and The Sea……Like Barr na Sráide
Well there you go Christy, a bit of a stretch to call us songsters, tho not all songsters have to sing. Us listeners have a big place too….
Christy, the football thing.I agree 100% with you. I couldn’t for the life of me manage the modern hand-foot-allovertheplace-ball. But you would have loved this young Tobin. Sent him on as a sub in a Leinster Colleges match in Croke Park, and with his massive high fielding and direct kick passing he swung the game round for us and led to a famous victory! Oh aye, he could sing a bit too…
Christy's reply
Darcy & Tobin…doubtless, a formidable combination…
Hello Christy,
is there any chance to see you in Prague or somewhere in middle europe or do I have to travel to Ireland :-)?
You are an amazing performer, I love your music. I wish you all the best.
Jaroslav
Christy's reply
Hello Jaroslav…thank you for your query..sorry to say I no longer travel to far off places….I’ve arrived at a time in my life when I need to get home after work…long haul is no longer an option
Hello Christy,
Ok, so I’d heard of the Saw Doctors, but I’m admitting now that I’d never heard them. If I want to do what I want to do (the folk thing) then the best way to do it seems to be to focus. I miss out on things but I progress as fast as I can. Too much about me there, so….
I went and had a listen.
I’m going to be totally honest here, so I hope I don’t cause any offense.
I’m wondering if the people who prefer the saw doctors’ version are saw doctors fans?
I’m clearly biased, but I like the way you’ve tightened the whole thing up, given it back its 60s bouncy optimism and brought out its naughtiness.
When I’m thinking about a song I’ll go and listen to your version first. Quite often I don’t move onto other versions. You’ve given me enough to start my own understanding and version of it.
It’s how it works for me.
Rebecca
Christy's reply
Its healthy to have songs crossing into other genres…spreading the seed around..let there be cross pollination…its disappointing when followers of an original version express, distaste, distress, sometime even hatred at subsequent cover versions… maybe they should relax the kecks and get on with life…thanks for your ongoing support and feedback…I really like The Saw Doctors ..they bring music ,fun ,craic and morán pleasure to many across the world
Pat Darcy – howya doing Pat? Hope all is well with you. See u around d town sometime. Wiedersehen!!

Hi, Christy et al
Sorry to bother, but is the Irish word for the language ‘Gaelic’? I somehow got the idea it is another, similarly spelled and like-sounding word.
no bother Brendan….. Gaeilge
“an bhfuil Gaeilge agat ?” …” have you got Irish ? ”
my own grasp is very loose….I grew up in a garrison town
I hope this works, and also that I’ve found the right picture…
