That was some line up Lar, I remember at the time I was raging ’cause I couldn’t make it. Looking back now I’m ragin’ even more as Old Father Time hunts us down!
Speaking of gigs, don’t anyone forget! It’s Frank Harte Weekend with a great line up. If anyone’s kicking around the Capital its well worth checking out!
Ahh Lar what a great night that was in 2008, such a cast of musicians, such a tribute to the man in that great venue, I remember there was a lot of love in the room, and it was a long gig !! It was the day after the All Ireland, we won’t dwell on the result, Tyrone deserved their third win, I guess !! I stayed over for the gig on the Mon, it softened the blow !! CM played the University Concert Hall in Limerick the following Fri and Sat, that was NOT the night he came out in the Tyrone Jersey ( Dungannon ) but he of course could not the match result go without comment, all great fun !! What great times we have and continue to have around the various gig buíochas le Dia. Beir bua agus beanncht. H

Thanks for posting Rebecca…
truth be told I’m knee deep in work here at the moment..
new songs to carve, shape ,paint, adding lines to the songs of others, seeking (and thankfully recieving) the go ahead from various writers, trying to chord and arrange, deciding the right key, do I let fly or hold back, adjustments to facilitate my limited chording abilities, deciding the best rhythm…
having done all this I sometimes find that I’m not doing justice to a song, yet it never feels like a waste of time, I love the engagement, the challenge , the joy….
I’m afraid I don’t have time to revisit these old gems you are posting..but I’m very glad that you are doing it and appreciate the effort you take to share these songs

It’s been too long !
Christy's reply
Hey Tony….Thank You…Yes ,its been too long …..since work recommenced I’ve not left The Island…I’m very fortunate to be still working when many of my contemporaries have either retired or been laid to rest….that said the work schedule is less hectic then heretofore….at 78 I do a lot less gigs than I did at 28…at the time of writing I have no plans to embark upon the Ferry….that may change..I simply dont know…
I did my first gig in Birmingham in 1967 in a pub called The Old Contemptible…the club was called The Skillet Pot and was run by the legendary Cork Singer ,the late Mick Hipkiss… in the following years I played in a club run my a Band called The Munstermen, another run by Tommy Dempsey and John Swift and yet another run by Ian Cambell’s Family in Digbeth Civic Hall…all great memories..
heres hopin we get to weave some new ones
Hmm Rory, I think we need an urgent meeting about the possibility of rigging the field. Is that the right term, I’m not a betting woman.
Anyway, what about the people who want to bet on you?
Hi Christy, having noted that your site is only 30 or so posts away from an amazing 33,333 posts it sent the mind a wandering.
Given we are under a constant monsoon i thought of Paul clerking away at Listowel’s Harvest Festival races , making hay whilst we here are planting rice.
I was inspired to check out with Paddy Power the odds on offer for who will be the 33333rd poster, and once they had warned me off the course for an irregular dope test, the runners and riders were being offered in their Bundoran shop as follows….

Hello Christy,
On Monday night I attended a singers and players night at the Topic club. It was all dome via zoom, so it was online. Met loads of people, there were about a dozen of us. John was the MC, he sang songs unaccompanied. One about the war. His father had been a conscientious objector. Joy played reels on the fiddle. There was a poet called Dennis reading his own work and Chad sang funny songs about love in the launderette and knickers. Someone asked me about a recording of Musgrave that I’d put up on Facebook somewhere, so I said I’d have a bash at it if they wanted. I sang Caledonia, then Musgrave. A few wrong chords in Caledonia but not too bad, it’s still a bit new.
It was a lovely night, not too many nerves, either that or I’m getting used to them. John said to come along and do a floor spot at a guest night. They’re based in the Groovy Pad in Shipley, so I’ll be schlepping the harp across there once I’ve looked at dates on their website.
Ah Fin you should write a book”, I sang Nancy Spain for my final song of the night , written by Barney Rush for the festival in Lisdoonvarna, it was Marie’s favorite song and her mother in law walked up to the stage and requested I sing it, they all sang along for the chorus and I felt her presence while singing it, strange for some, for me it was a special moment, I made them sing , smile and remember a lady taken much to soon by Ovarian Cancer. That’s the job but for me it’s not a job it’s a joy and I’m blessed that I can, I never sing for the money, I sing the songs for me and the friendships music has given me along the way, I’m very blessed and grateful for your support and kindness over the years Git, it means a lot to me and I just want you to know that, all my love , take care of yourself from Boston to Bognia Fin
And just to get the juices flowing here’s a clip of himself with with another lad that’s fairly handy!
