Nicky Ryan! Didn’t know he was your sound man. I had the good fortune to meet him when he managed Clannad early 80s and I was doing a bit of concert organising. I brought Clannad to the Town Hall, Dundalk, Áine (Enya) and all. Nicky liked the way I organised things.
Years later, brought my son to a clinic in Bonn for a hernia operation. When the nurse heard the Irish accent ‘do you know Clannad’? she asked. ‘ I nursed Nicky Ryan here in hospital in Bonn when he was rushed in during a Clannad tour’. She wanted me to give Nicky her best wishes…..
A grand wee world. Thanks for the info on Des. Probably heard him with the Capitol in many a ballroom around Dundalk. We’re you into the Showband thing at all Christy?
Christy's reply
yes , Nicky produced our sound first time round ..we learned a lot from him….he went on to help create The Clannad sound …and on again to create the Enya sound..both Clannad and Enya achieved world wide acclaim with Nicholas at the desk….

Barcastle sausages, they must still exist after all these years. I think Joe and his travails became the subject of legends of which Joe was apparently happy enough to go along and put up with. Am aware of the song lyrics.
”It was in Gulf of Acaba/I met some paddys/and we had a fleadh…….”
I like the words ‘creed’ and ‘feed’ meeting into rhyme, as for white, black and yellow put into song, sing it anyway. Might be better not to record it!
Hello Christy,
By Heck, you guys know how to make a sausage sandwich. I like a good veggie sausage myself. Not managed to fit six into a sandwich yet though. Tomato ketchup is the thing here.
We call that part of the bread a doorstep.
I tried your recipe for tea. Steve drinks McKentee’s loose leaf tea. He says its the tea-iest tea he’s ever tasted.
So, 2 to 1 McKentees and Earl Grey, stewed in a proper teapot. Honey and full cream milk. This stuff is gorgeous!
Nic’s guitar playing, riffin, slappin, pickin and pluckin….. awesome
and apparently it all came naturally to the good man…
legend has it that he never had to work endlessly at arranging his accompaniments…
you have a treat in store with “Penguin Eggs”
Nic is my number one guitar man…not a doubt about it
By the Lord Christy, that Galway Joe was some man for one man! He links up Flan O’Brien, my favourite showband in those days the Capitol, Planxty, and the famous hill of Masada. I really liked Sweeney’s Men back in the day, but you know, I never knew their names! That Andy, Joe, and the bard of Dalymount we’re the first lineup amazes me. Amazed at my ignorance!
I can’t really figure out why Joe felt drawn to ‘the Holy Land’ but I suppose in the 60s we knew less than we know now.
He did spend a good few months atop Masada digging out the old buildings, maybe was on the hill for the six day war, maybe not. I think excavations stopped….and in fairness Des Kelly did say ‘he arrived in Jerusalem on the 7th day….but it took him a year to get there’!
I like your comment in your notes in your Songbook…’don’t know if he got there’.
A question (or two). Did Joe play for the Capitol? And was Des Kelly a manager or musician or both?
Boy this guestbook takes me right back to the Pavilion ballroom Blackrock!
Christy's reply
The late Des Kelly was the Bass Player and Leader of The Capitol Showband…when the Band retired Des went into Management… Joe played Rhythm Guitar in The Capitol for a while ( not sure how long)…When Sweeney’s Men gathered Joe suggested that Des might Manage them….thus followed their hit singles ….half a decade on Planxty were struggling and Andy suggested that Des might take us on…what a great move that was…he provided us with a Van ( with aeroplane seats !!!!) a PA system but Des also became a dear friend…Planxty’s first 2 singles were on Des Kelly’s Ruby Records label..”Three Drunken Maidens” and” Cliffs of Dooneen” both charted in the (then) important Singles Charts… we were on the pigs back , criss crossing the nation from Kildimo to Kilcrohane…then we got our very first Sound Engineer ( Nicky Ryan) and a Recording Deal with Phil Coulter…the rest is Geography

‘Galway’ Joe Dolan had listened to events during the Six Day War, 1967, and decided to take off and arrived to Israel on the ‘seventh day’. It was over. Too late. So the legend goes.

slightly correct but at variance with the absolute truth, the whole truth lies within the lyric of Joe’s song “The Trip To Jerusalem”
might someone bring Ed up to speed..? I’m exhausted here in the workshop….been prepping for Castlebar all day..just had a tasty supper with a Barcastle Sausage Sandwich (6 sausages)… plenty of Country Butter, a slobber of Colmans Mustard, two heels off a fresh Turnover with a mug of scald ( mix of Barry’s and Earl Grey with brown sugar and full cream milk ) to wash it down… I’m struggling here to knock out the Knock Song out in time for Saturday Night…

Here’s the Bard himself in full flow from O’Donoghues Opera, if my mats is correct would he still be a teenager there Christy? Is that Anne Briggs painting the picture and taking a sup of his pint?

I like that album, well done Rory for sending me to my music room to have a vinyl session…..and good to see Luka with his family name on the album…question Christy: why did you label Johnny Moynihan the bard of Dalymount? I presume he didn’t play for Bohes?
Christy's reply
Johnny grew up in Dalymount… was a very skilled sporting man ..even invented a game called Handball/Football
Hi Christy
In the current political climate i don’t suppose that playing TRIP TO JERUSALEM is likely at a gig any time soon.
The album it came from could be re named The Iron Dome Behind The Velvet Underground Bunker.
It sounds a really fun song to have been mixed up in at the time, irrespective of whether jerusalem artichokes are on your shopping list now or not.
How did recording it come about?
Rory
Christy's reply
in 1972 I was playing in Furbo ,Galway with Planxty..sun lunchtime I went to the “Poitin Still ” for the session…Gerry Joyce sang two songs that were written by “Galway” Joe Dolan….I latched on to them and asked Gerry about them..I also met up with Joe himself who also gave me the nod…some years later I was recording an album (circa ’77) and I got Joe’s two songs out and rehearsed them with the team ( Luka Bloom, Andy Irvine, Jimmy Faulkner, Noel Hill, Tony Linnane, Gabriel McKeon) we recorded the album and did a wee tour…we were living on top of the Castlecomer Plateau at the time and the air was perfumed with local ganja and wee drops of sweet poitín
Come on over to Germany Christy…. you’ll have none of that Christmas shite to deal with…..Billy Smart’s circus hasn’t even made it to the TV …

How’s the form? Just writing to you from Dungiven up in County Derry here (Francie & Joe Brolly country). Brilliant to see you’re still entertaining and chanting the length and breadth of the country. I’ve seen you well over 20 times in the last good number of years and I fail to remember a gig where I’ve come away without great awe and inspiration. I play and sing folk and trad music myself, with you being the biggest inspiration of my musical journey.
The reason I write is that the whole family are attending your concert in Castlebar Saturday night coming (28th Oct) and would greatly appreciate a shout out most notably to my Father and Mother (George & Marian Murphy) who recently celebrated their 70th Birthday. The oul boy has played in folk bands all his life and started me listening to you from the early 80s (my childhood). Brothers and Sister all going (5 of us). They’ve had a few health scares recently so delighted all’s well to go. I myself have all your albums, quare stuff altogether. The whole family have followed you through your own career from Moving Hearts, to Planxty, to times with Sinnott/Hayden etc etc. and onto your own solo bits and pieces. Would greatly appreciate if you were to dedicate a song to them, if chosen, particularly ‘Motherland’, or ‘Sail on Jimmy’, or ‘Bright Blue Rose’. Fair play to ye. Still flying the flag and carrying the team.
Good man Christy. A legend!
P.S I know it’s not something you normally do, but if at all possible, I’d love to get a family photo to frame for the house with yourself maybe after the gig (if allowed or can be arranged). Again, if not possible, no worries.
Thanks again for everything down the years!!
Let he music keep your spirits high!!
Christy's reply
Good man Eunan…thanks for your post …but what about Anne Brolly ??? sure enough, great to see Francie mentioned but lets not forget Anne !! Joe is well able to look after himself…I’m hoping to mark him in a tussle at some future date..I’m in serious training hoping to take him out…
it will be a pleasure to sing for you in Castlebar but the proposed photo is a no go area…there was a time Eunan when I’d pose all night with the Murphy’s from Dungiven… but these days , after the gig, I’m carried straight to the Oxygen Tent…Fr Darcy on Stand by in case Extreme Unction is required…my Personal nurse administers live saving injections as Holy Water from Lough Derg is rubbed into various parts of my 78 year old carcass…after a deep-body-re-invigourating-Chinese massage with acapuncture and Reiki for dessert , myself and the road crew fall to our knees for 5 deckitts of the Joyful Mysteries……posing for shots is a long forgotten after-gig pleasure…only then will Fr Brian hear my confession ( and me his)
Thanks to you and the family for all your support and good listening…I’ll be practicing those three songs as soon as I get up and boil the egg….three good choices there Eunan…all of them still to the good…
Greetings Christy. I have been in Ireland from Newcastle, Australia for the last month now, mainly on the West Coast, singing and strumming a few pub sessions with some wonderful local musos from Doolin to Donegal and back. “Bitten by the ballads.”
I will be in Castlebar for your show this Saturday 28 October. I first saw you perform at the State Theatre in Sydney way back in the 90s if my memory serves me correctly. There’s been much water under the old Harbour Bridge since then. Prior to the virus, I saw you play in Ballybunion which was memorable. Your show on Saturday will be just the tonic I need for the long haul back to the Antipodes next week. Cheers, Christy.
