Great weekend of music in the Pool Christy, I went to a Vivaldi concert last night and off to see Lankum tonight, that Vivaldi fella was no Bob Dylan when it came to lyrics but he knew how to write a cracking tune. 2DC John
I’m not sure if this is the right forum to ask but thought I’d try anyway – I bought tickets for your gig in Vicar Street on the 11th of December for me and my mum Margaret (they were a present for her 76th birthday), who is a massive fan and has never been able to see you live before. She’s travelling down from Donegal for the gig. She ADORES Viva La Quinta Brigada and your cover of the Cliffs of Dooneen. It would be pure magic to hear either or both at the concert. We are so looking forward to it! All the best💞
Hello Christy,
It’s raining like the very Deluge itself here in rural Warwickshire. The river next to our barn is flooded and I’m hoping we can get through to catch our flight from Birmingham to Dublin on Monday. We would not want to miss the final part of our 50th wedding anniversary celebration. So all being well we will be sitting at Table row 2 at Vicar Street on Monday night. We are so looking forward to seeing you again as part of our special celebration. Take care. Tom and Vishva
Well Christy, hope all’s well with you? RIP Shane Mac Gowan, a true poet, Were you at the funeral today? I saw you gig in Kilkenny a few weeks back, it was one of the best performances of any artist I’ve ever seen. A great credit to you, I hope I have a fraction of your energy and heart when I’m your age, I was truly blown away. I have tickets for Mullingar in February, lookin forward to repeating the experience!. I have a song that might suit you? It’s about Palestine. I wrote it early in the year, It’s still sadly very relevant, It’s called “Boots on the ground” Here’s a link …. https://brendanmelia.bandcamp.com/track/boots-on-the-ground Have a listen and I’d be delighted if you would/could make a tune out of it. I think it would fit you. Keep well, don’t do any strenuous activities before February! All the best
Love your reply detailing your memories of Tulla, Christy. Robbie’s First Friday singing session has its home now in a fabulous new centre in Tulla. What was the Covent and primary school is now the Cnoc na Gaoithe Centre. Our long standing home of Duggan’s Pub in Spancilhill did not reopen post Covid.
The card you sent to Robbie for the 80th birthday singing session celebration is on proud display in Robbie & Maura’s home all the time.
Is Glór in Ennis on the agenda again anytime soon Christy?
Robbie’s First Friday singing session, started by the late great Robbie McMahon celebrates its 22nd birthday in January. Robbie always spoke fondly of your time in Tulla.
Christy's reply
hope to play Glór in 2024
its 60 years since I landed on the Windswept Hill
the best of digs with Mrs Tubridy in the
Green House up the Hill beside The National Bank where I tried to work
across the road was Teddy Murphy’s pub where I learned “The Scariff Martyrs”
( aka “The Bridge of Killaloe”) from Teddy’s Mother..She had attended the funeral’s of “young McMahon & Rogers, brave Egan & Kildea”
down the hill in John Minogue’s Hotel I first heard “Spancilhill”……great memories from my time in Tulla, Joe McGrath, Paddy Canny, Vincent Griffin to name but a few
New recordings Christy! Prosperous! Back to the roots! Doctor Rynne’s cellars? I must tell Ned Farrell’s Young fella!
Christy's reply
that Cellar no longer accessible to wandering troubadours…now I’m recording in a house that lies an Irish mile, across the fields, as the crow flies, from Downings
Whispers of a new recording and of Prosperous has a lovely sound to it. Good luck with the recording today, may the sweet notes fall in the right places. Kev
Hello Christy,
Hope your recording is going well.
Recording Palestine with Martin Leahy was very different to what I expected.
Me in a room in Brighouse, all by myself with two mobile phones and some headphones.
Took me ages to open up enough to produce something that was ok.
Weird way of doing it, he stuck it all together afterwards, all by himself.
Good for introverts.. .?
Hi Christy,

Loving the kind hard love tributes to Shane…

Hello Christy,
thanks so much for your great response…sounds like a new song. Magic.
I think it s very special and it s so very YOU, that you really write to us and keep personally in touch. I think this is just wonderful.
By the way I listened to beeswings by Richard Thompson and let me say….it s lightyears away from your version. Honestly! Your one is under the skin, The other one is just a song.
Stay alive and kickin
Ursula
Christy's reply
It was Richard who created the song..
He laid out the lines so carefully
then wrote the music that lifts his lines off the page
sends them off upon the air
for us all to listen ,
to sing, to marvel…..
the wind is howling here tonight
rafters rattling, spiders shivering
Hi Christy,
Was trying to write a Limerick about a Tipperary man.
Didn’t know where to start until I heard these lines from
Streams of Whiskey
“Life has often tried to stretch me
But the rope always was slack”
And decided to start at the end and work back…
Shane
MacGowan went to London when young.
‘Twas there that he faught, fucked an’ sung.
A poet, A pogue
A rebel, A rogue
The man who just could not be hung.
Nice to see a pair of brown eyes and aisling in the set list.
Hope the Vicar St. run continues to go well

Hi christy, heading to your gig on Monday 11th December. Would it be possible to request the voyage for my husband Pól. It’s his birthday, and the song has special meaning to us. Big fans, looking forward to the summer festival in Belfast 2024.
Thanks Eimear
Christy's reply
So many requests for call outs Eimear GaGa….I gotta save some time for the songs, gotta stay in tune and give everyone a fair shake
Hi Christy,
Vicar street sounds a blast, the vicars, bishops, chaplains and deacons will be delighted.
However i was seething away, unable to find the words after a labour leader praised that woman for entreprenurialism and mission. I should have known that the box set would have the answer .
There it was hidden between 2 great protest songs in the shape of Tim Evans and In Zurich…….The greed and avarice that prevailed in the british economy during her reign…..whether music, poetry, statement or whatever, it helped me vent.
