I saw the first cuckoo come ashore yesterday to a flock of magpies protesting the legitimacy of her citizenship.
She sat on top of a telephone pole looking down on me, told me to get off my arse and bring the dusty sleán out. How’s she cuttin? Like a knife.!
I have inherited a left handed one…sleán ciotach.
I felt a bit put out listening to the Stardust song on Liveline . If someone had the guts to keep playing it at that time.. would those people have had to fight for so long. ? The horse never seems to come before the cart.
A dámh I have to that story is that Sean McBride was my great grandfather’s second cousin.
Does that overqualify me? As you say.
What was he like?
I’m flat out with exams these days had to defer because a flue that just won’t go.Its said 3 lá ag teacht, 3 lá i neart, 3 lá ag imeacht.
I was over in Derby a few weeks back for my grand Aunts funeral.
Funerals are a different affair over there.
There was a lad in a big hat that announced no walking behind the herse. Giving us orders for 800 years the feckers.
The Irish frontline contingent had Mom tell him “we will walk here as we do back home “!
We walked all through Derby and down Nottingham Road to the cemetery. RIP to all the people in there must be millions the graveyard stretches a good distance.
That’s all for now Slán go fóil

I met him 4 times…always warm and friendly….he invitted me to sing at a function once in Dublin…asked me to sing “Natives”….Brendan Gleeson played that night too
them Magpies are only hear a wet week themselves..noisy feckers, they got blown here from France one stormy night…the Cuckoo was here long before them, them Magpies is robbin feckers…I have a catapult by the upstairs window but ,so far, I’ve not got one.. thy take off sneering and laughing at me…I’ve asked both US and Israeli Ambassadors for a few blast bombs but they’ve none to spare at the minute
This is Finbar at his very best…such a delivery of the slow air…unique ,controlled, harmonious use of his regulators….the big beautiful sound of his pipes in full flow ,all three departments perfectly tuned..brings me back to some cherished times, over 50 years ago in Peebles, sitting in his kitchen, listening to a master play…
By chance,I found a great online piece about The Johnston’s….always a treat. The piece was written by a guy who booked the band for gigs in England, just over 50 years ago.
The site is run by an ex journalist and has a huge artist/music archive…ideal for folk here and research etc. Several links to the dreaded Facebook, but I’ll have a look for a ‘Salut’ website…Dave
Hi christy,
Just thinking about politics. I like a political argument , and history, movements of our times and previous times, and wonder if our politicians are less worthy than those gone before.
The answer seems to be yes, less worthy. Sleaze, scandal, selfishness and greed.
I think of 2 particular songs in your recent songbook, I Hate Politicians and Mick Blake’s Oblivious, Mick is always hitting the mark , as does the other song.
Of course there have always been bad politicians, of course, but maybe the latest crop have been an ill sown field.
Hope you have a fine trip to Derry . If you get the chance drop in to Cool Discs and pick up some great recommendations for musical purchases.
Rory
Great watching the film Rory posted…terrific warmth to the piece and music performed….
Watching it on YouTube,I realised I’ve seen a few films by Myles O’Reilly. A great man for showing the best of human nature in the settings he uses. I’ll be having a Mylesfest this evening.
Also, hoping that some David gig footage will emerge.Id love to see him at work…
Hello Christy,
I saw a few things from your nephew Davog Rynne about last nights gig. Sounds like it was a great thing indeed. Hope you had a good time there. Wishing you both the very best. I hope to see hum live sometime. I’ve admired his voice for years.
Thankyou for the thing about the chords. I really appreciate your and your team’s kindness.
Hello Christy, and as a heads up to others here, I see yourself and the nephew, Conor, are on tonight’s Geantraí from the Cobblestone. Can I ask when it was recorded? Wasn’t it great that the developers were defeated here for a change. TG4 also produced a great documentary about the Cobblestone, for those who haven’t seen it its well worth a look. When I think of certain “developers” the Jim Page / Moving Hearts song “Landlord” (did you ever do it solo?) always comes to mind!
Thanks.
Hi Christy,
Paul Brady played The Hanger last night.
Himself and the band were in great form.
It was one of those magic nights when
singer, songs and songsters were all in synch.
Big smiley head on him as he went through the back pages.
No Lakes of Ponchertrain but a lovely version of
The homes of Donegal made up for it.
They’re going fairly well against Derry.
Poised for a mighty second half.
Enjoy the upcoming cabarets by the walls.

Paul does a great job on “The Homes’..one night in Vicar St., years ago, he got up on stage with ( I think) Rosanna Cash…they did the Forty Shades and it was simply beautiful…roll on Galway
Great posts here today.
Small correction from am earlier post, it was Thursday night’s Primetime, RTE 1 TV, the song was played instead of regular signature tune, so Morning Ireland played it on Friday morning on the radio.

all good Ed…great that its getting a spin after being banned for decades….I hope Butterly hears it… Judge Murphy too, wherever his spirit lingers out there in the far distant beyond….maybe Seán McBride be listening in ..Seán represented us that day…
I met some of the Stardust families at the Gaza protest today…a weight has lifted …but they will always remember their lost loved ones
Just had a kip, having left home at z o’clock to join a Record Store Day queue outside a local record shop…a fun experience.Friendly chat in the line, several punters young enough to be my grandkids. They had excited chat about releases and gigs by artists I’ve read about, but don’t know their music. But the vibe and buzz was timeless…I got a fab release of Buena Vista Social Club. Gold vinyl, double disc and fab sleeve notes plus photos. Never had a vinyl copy of the album and the opening of Chan Chan zapped me back to Havana, where I was 13 years ago today…
Closer to home (sadly, not close enough to visit)I’ve been looking at the programme for the Willie Clancy Summer School…a fine mix Inc a talk about Margaret Barry and music by Lisa O’Neill…a class mix.
Kettle going on now and more Cuban music…vamos, hasta luego

Hello Christy,
Here I am in a cafe in Settle, drinking black coffee and eating pain au chocolat. Steve is busy at his pipes lesson and I feel like I’m on holiday.
Woke up this morning thinking about the F chord. I feel like I understand your early frustration with the damned E string. I’m feeling it. Decisions are made. I won’t be adjusting any tunings, but I feel the temptation to just sort it out. I’ll be persevering, and avoiding strumming that string till my fingers catch up. They’re bound to work at some point, aren’t they…?
Rosalita joined me yesterday for a very stilted play through, but I got there!
I’m making a list.

Sali on Jimmy. Need to find the chords.

As 4711ers We often ‘stumble’ across youtube clips, well i ‘fell’ headlong into this one.
The story is that….. the recorder spent a month on-board a barge with Ye Vagabonds documenting one of the most memorable music tours of my life, where brothers Diarmuid and Brían Mac Gloinn brought their beautiful folk songs to lucky audiences along the inland waterways of Ireland. Not only did they perform from the barge but along the way they also invited friends to play with them.
I saw ye vagabonds play in late 22 with joshua in stirling, on the castle edge which was special, but this ( with laura quirke added) is even more special, and a tour via barge, well that is something else.
Here, i think, is the link.
another generation take up the songs and music and make their way…I first heard Ye Vagabonds a decade ago and loved their take on the music..great to see them “stick-to-their-guns”and not get sucked into the maelstrom…..this is a lovely piece of footage of what must have been a glorious experience…
we have a great system of waterways here….slowly they are returning to life and will be become highways once again when the inevitable time comes
Good man Rory….I love to see what floats to the surface here on our old website

Judge Murphy has gone to an even Higher Court….Butterly has never yielded an inch
