Having promised I’d be back.
Joe Duffy’s Liveline ‘yesterday’, Wednesday, the entire programme devoted to Stardust, victims and several others, relations and others talking to Joe. I found it interesting that Joe himself, he told us he attended the ‘Keane Tribunal’ in Kings Inns, he was a Trinity student. He used the term ‘obvious’ three times, and he told us on radio, to him anyway, it was obvious the ‘doors were locked’.
Well there is no doubt about it Christy but you have a great memory! My memory is gone to the dogs! But I do remember that Edenderry fleadh… a mighty time was had by all. Dabra here!

Ah D, you’re the real one. Good to have you back. There we were, us nearly going to set up crowd funding for a new computer. I’ll be back some time soon.
Hi Christy
Great to start the day, reading of the great Derry gig and that you’re recording as well…enjoy.
Music has been a good theme today. Had fun emails with Rochdale’s balladeer,Jennifer Reid. She’s delighted that you like her singing…she’s having a good week, having been mentioned in a Manchester music piece in The Guardian yesterday. It’s a detailed article by Chris Moss, referencing many music genres and history linked to the city.
A sunny afternoon was made even better as I tracked fine fiddle playing in Altrincham….John was busking brilliantly, with a mellow drone via a foot pedal on a Shruti box. When he took a break we had a natter….he plays occasional sessions, busks in South Manchester and plays in care homes….no social media, internet links etc I told him I’d prattle about him here and I hope he posts sometime.Hopefully, with a link as many here would enjoy his playing.
When I mentioned your name,John’s response was brill…’i love Christy,he’s a real man of the people’ …that’s what I was mulling over in a cafe,awhile later.Its a rare thing…fine as a beeswing…
Dave
Christy's reply
happening upon a special busker always enhances a day in the life….I have some outstanding memories…I heard Abi Wallenstein in Hamburg many years ago and he subsequently did two tours with me..I heard (old) Davy Stewart in Glasgow and he came to Blairgowrie….I heard a beautiful Busker in Cambridge many years ago and we corresponded until we drifted apart…I heard The Pecker Dunne in Killorglin and later held his daughter Sara at her christening…special buskers…..there are good songs about buskers..John Hoban has a great song about John “Jacko” Reilly
Brilliant news that you are doing a bit of recording – and especially that they are those beautiful Lyra and Palestine songs. Hopefully the process goes well. Been listening to the Cal soundtrack in the headphones at work to drown out the background noise – was all grand until i started looking for Mick Devine’s torch 7 you weren’t there lol. It made me wonder though, how that came to be the mood setting music for the gigs – a perfect choice for sure with Liam’s pipes. Funny how some tracks become associated in the mind. A bit of a difference from the old Celestial Soda Pop days for sure. Hope all is good and looking forward to Thursday’s second half. Hoping it goes to extra time and penalties – or even a replay 🙂

Johnny Boy…
had a good day in the walled city today..managed to record two songs …
I never tire of the music from “Cal”…..each night I stand side stage before we commence…”Cal” settles me….I sense that it suits the audience too…it goes in gently, it colours, soothes, prepares..
Of late we have been playing Liam Óg O’Flynn at the end of the gig…he plays “Táimse im Codhladh” on Uilieann Pipes accompanied by Donal lunny on Keyboard..its one of my favourite Planxty tracks and is from the 1981 album “Words & Music”
Great concert last night Christy. Well done. We had seats right at the very back, at the very top of the MF and I have to say the acoustics were exceptional. A great venue. Loved that you included ‘Bloody Sunday’ in your encore. Listened to your interview with Dion Fanning and Joe Brolly then when I got home. Very funny. Brolly is a buck. It got me thinking, did you ever sing ‘The Gem of the Roe’?
On a seperate note, we are taking our good friend John Campbell (Letterkenny) to see you on Thursday night. John has be undergoing treatment over the last year and was unable to attend your concert last year because of it. Thankfully this year he is strong enough to attend all going well. He’ll be sitting up in one of the boxes. I know he’d be blown away if you gave him a wee ‘shout out’. I cannot stress how much of a fan he is.
Great to see that your keeping well and that the onstage stretches are keeping you limber btw. Onwards and upwards.
Christy's reply
Thank You Odhran…..David Meade has been doing my sound for the past 20 years….he takes great care at the task…..knowing that gives me the confidence to stretch my vocals..to whisper,to croon, to put it out loud, sometimes, even to bellow….good to get your feedback which I will pass on to David….his brother John looks after the guitars and keeps my stage gear in shape, both Donegal from Ballyshannon..Dickon takes care of monitor sound and notes potential potholes..Geoff has been lighting the lamps for manys the year…Mick is our logistician, Road manager,Barista and Biriyani taster, Paddy is Captain and over sees all our activities…Marius and Cian provide assistance and durability
Yesterday A landmark day for the Stardust Families and for yourself too of course. Pure coincidence, in that I was visiting friends in Dublin who were students on the night of that tragic event in February 1981 and yesterday 43 years later I was in Dublin visiting my daughter who is a student in Dublin. Yesterday, Taoiseach Simon Harris issued a State apology in the Dáil and said the State had failed them when they needed help the most. Some family members were moved to tears as they sat in the public gallery to hear Mr Harris’s apology more than 43 years after the devastating nightclub blaze. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a n-anamacha.
Christy's reply
I’m reminded of the sitting Taoiseach back in 1981…how he “wept” (on TV) for his “constituents”….
Really looking forward to the gig on Thursday night in the Forum Christy, the whole family are heading as its my brother Luke’s 18th birthday on the day. If you could give him a shout out I know it would make his night.
Mise le meas,
Darren

now you have me thinking of my own 18th….1963 we went to a Fleadh Ceol in Portarlington….17 of of us in the late Mick Curran’s Bedford Van….two seats in the front and a motley crew in the back…we stopped in Miltown,Blacktrench Cross,Allenwood, Carbury, Edenderry before saiing into Port on Sat afternoon… I had 3 chords,4 songs, 5 shillings and an awful thirst..we checked into a haybarn, got dolled up and away with us into Town…Frank Lunny Jnr scaled a monument where he played Boolavogue of a Clarks C Whistle….I vamped Davoc Rynne’s “Sligo Maid” in A minor….Donal Lunny stopped the traffic playing “Carolan’s Concerto” on his Harmony Soverign…such a gathering was never seen before or since…Ciaran Bourke was on fire….Mick McGaune took the floor….Mary Jordan did a spoons solo and Jessie Ownes sang “Come to the Bower” I was in heaven
From the city hotel Derry. Thanks very much for a wonderful night of music and song last night. As the saying goes it’s half time.Looking forward very much to the second half on Thursday. Let the music keep our spirits high.
Christy's reply
Morra David…Timoleague will be quiet in you’re absence….lovely morning here in Derry…working on a new album today…gonna mix “The Big Marquee” and do some overdubs on “Lyra”….its coming together gradually….Jim Page’s “Palestine” is recorded and I’m hoping to nail a version of Martin Leahy’s “Snowflakes”…
that was an impressive inter-county front row last night….
Thank you for yet another memorable night in the Forum. Great to have you back Foyleside and in fine voice. Brilliant to have 4711ers from far and near visit the town too. Saw Joe Brollys mum too – a fine singer herself. Turned Newstalk on on the way home and Tom Dunne played They Never Came Home.. Said it was the unparalleled Christy Moore. Great to see the public support and love for the victims and their families, but I’m sure they would rather have their children back. Thanks to all the crew behind you who ensure everything runs smoothly. Roll on Thursday, and enjoy your time with us.
Christy's reply
All the crew playing a blinder….everything is sorted when I arrive…stage bullt…PA set up and checked, lights focused, moniters balanced, guitars re-strung and tuned, wardrobe deloused and pressed, dressing room smelling of roses, grub laid on , coffee brewing , tea stewing, all I have to do is get out there and make noise for 1 hour 45 minutes, shout roar whisper croon shimmy shake and try to stay alive….its dark and lonely work but someone’s gotta do it….Ride On John
Hi C. An eventful time, many events to which you seem to inextricably linked in obvious and maybe not so obvious ways. The Free State podcast covers lots of ground and theThe Stardust Apology from the State. The Silent Testimony Exhibition by Colin Davidson opens in London shortly. Here is speaks of it’s importance, it provides great context and uncovers the personal horrors behind the statistics of “The Troubles ” https://fb.watch/rDGYY8e4Y-/ He also of course did a wonderful portrait of your goodself. Enjoy the welcome on the Walls, Beir bua agus beannacht. H

That may have been summer 2024 been and gone, I think we are “starting to pay the price as that clock winds down” but hopefully it’s not to late. Anyhow looking forward to seeing you tonight again in Derry it’s been a while and always a magical “home” gig on the banks of the foyle. I hope you get a big Derry dinner as well.
Christy's reply
I’ve never departed Derry feeling peckish !!! Olive & Bertie Barrett always had the dinner ready….two great friends back in troubled times
Hi Christy, I’d love to see you re release that album with “ They never came home “ it was the truth then and we all knew it to be the truth when we first heard the song , the hell the victims families went through for all those years, the smear campaign by the political leaders and the law has been disgusting to say the least. The compensation the families received and the financial loss to you as a man of integrity still angers me , it always will. I paid tribute to Mrs Keegan, the 48 who suffered and died in the stardust fire and the survivors, I sang both songs side by side, “Another song is born”. I’ve often heard people speak of the “The Stardust Disaster “!!, my response was always, “when windows are barred and exits chained”it’s hardly a disaster, I’d call it murdered. I honestly believe the money it cost you to defend your lyrics should be returned to you. Sorry if I’m outa line but it’s how I feel today here in Boston.
Paul Doran’s song “Greenland” has a emigration imagery to it , sailing away from all we’ve ever known to live in a place we know nothing about, it’s what attracted me to the song.
Hope you’re all doing great and the road is kind.
Love Fin 💚🎶
