Hello Christy – I hope you and yours are all keeping well.
I don’t get to the gigs as often nowadays but I always keep an eye and ear out. I’ll get there soon.
I found some old videos of Wally and Johnny from December 2007 that I’m in the process of transferring to digital. They were in The Rotterdam in Belfast and it was a mighty gig as usual.
Here’s the first one I’ve uploaded “All For The Roses”. I’ll do more soon.
Wally occupies a special place in my heart, in my work….lovely to see himself and Johnny hammering it out…Thanks for posting….
seems like I’m gonna be singing Jim Page’s “Palestine” on Virgin Media (TV3 ) on Wed night 10pm…
Hello Danny, yes it was me. We had good times at the Brazen Head. Glad you did too.
Our first trip to Ireland was a coach trip. We had no idea where anything was, so it was a good way to find our feet and see lots of things.
Shame you didn’t manage to get to a gig. Maybe you might come over again in a less organised way, now you’ve dipped a toe? It’s a bit further, I know. I travelled solo to Australia in my 30s. Spent a scary night in Bangkok Airport between flights. I hadn’t been sensible enough to work out where to sleep. Anyway, I’m still here.
Hello Christy,
Hope things are well with you and yours. I think you are very busy right now. I’m busy with the music. Singing at a Zoom session with the Topic club tomorrow night. Trying to keep the harp on the boil while learning the guitar. Smoke and Strong Whiskey and Rosalita are not far off, 4 and 3 chords in them. I’m learning to use a capo. Practising a few times a day. I have a fine set of callouses now.
Reading a few pieces about the battle of Monte Casino,80 years ago…brutal combat and some troops harshly called,D-Day Dodgers…in amongst the online reading is a song, that I haven’t heard for years…
Hamish Imlach on fine form with D-Day Dodgers – on YouTube…brilliantly delivered…early verses, ironically light-hearted,then the sting in the tail…
Thank you to Rebeccah (I’m sure it was you?) for the tip to visit for a meal & a pint…
Excellent venue!
Tried Harp Lager – very drinkable
Regards to you all
Christy's reply
betimes, when the need is greatest, almost anything is drinkable, keeping it down might be an initial problem but, with persistence, the day begins to turn and, gradually , we are led back to from whence we came…
have a gentle cruise Danny
Dear Christy
Lost count how many times we’ve came to Ireland to see you. Over the years we’ve crisscrossed the country and explored many beautiful places and met some amazing people. And every year I’m more and more in love with it. Hope you’re not to nervous for tomorrow at the NCH. There’s no need for it, on the way everyone tells me the same. You’re simply the best with a very loyal audience!
See you in Dublin tomorrow ❤️
Chris from Belgium
Christy's reply
I’m a day late reading your post…hope you had a good night
Dear Christy, while I’m writing this I’m listening to your cd Folk Tale, one of my favorits. When I hear you sing “oh Haïti, you will rise again”,I think “oh Palestina, you will be able to rise again?” – Next Sunday I go to Brussels to join the international manifestation for ceasefire and peace for a free Palestine, and commemorate 76 years of Nakba. I once protested against the second gulf war, unfortunately without results. Now the disaster already happened but we keep hoping. For myself, maybe i’ll get a little peace of mind after that day. Christy, I hope your voice is well and you can sing again. All the best wishes!
PS I am,proud to be a 4711er
Christy hi
New music is always a joy to discover so i recommend ,to the massed ranks of 4711ers, Brogeal who are an enjoyable Scottish energetic folk based group of youngsters.
We all remember the days when we had that energy….even if amongst us only Adam and CS are probably of an age to actually use it in all the ways they feel like…..though we all try to do so ….but my early morning jog was disappointingly slow, my pogoing less high and my all nighters end by 10pm.
Rory
Yes Christy – Cobh tomorrow for Cork, Dublin the next then Belfast. Back on ship about 5pm each day so no evening shenanigans
Still will look around -love this country & its people
Hope I bump into you in the street (joke)
As I was rambling on about Davy Spillane,I noticed an interesting reference on The Storm track listing…
Tribute to Peadar O’Donnell
Commissioned by the committee for concerned universities’ staff -University College,Galway
I hope the committee liked the music…as a result,I’m now enlightened by online pieces about the amazing PO’D…’folk’ music at its best, linking past and present…D
Played a lot of Moving Hearts yesterday and settled on ‘The Storm’ to start today…Over the years,I think I’ve taken Davy Spillane a bit too much for granted. In that his consistency is stunning-on pipes and low whistle… solos and ensemble ‘drive’ is a wonderful mix. On this album,Donal Lunny set up Tribute to Peadar O’Donnell, which is now on repeat!
Hi Christy,
Good to see Woody Guthrie been mentioned in dispatches.
Minded of a compilation – A Vision Shared.
The great and the good singing Woddy and Leadbelly songs.
Willie Nelson, His Bobness, His Bruceness , U2 …
Our Emmylou stole the show with Hobo’s Lullaby.
Woddy’s son Arlo got the silver with East Texas Red.
How do goodness ? How do greatness ?
And no sign of the Christyman’s Sacco and Vanzetti.
Hope the throat gets better.
Fisherman’s friends are your only man.

A line of poetry on the field running through song from the terraces for over 135 years .Glasgow Celtic are champions again, as the great Tommy Burns said ‘ you’re playing for a people and a cause’.
There will be much singing, fiddles playing, dancing and hugging in the greenest part of that dear green place.
By lonely prison wall…..

Waterstones has a great shop on Deansgate. One of their tactics to get my cash is to put music books on prominent display…their cunning plan worked today, but their profits aren’t swelled by much. For a tenner,I have a newly published, hard back gem…’A Year in Story and Song’,by Lia Leendertz…lots of context info, songs and music.Starting with Ae Fond Kiss, finishing with The Wren Song…and for May,Solidarity Forever…Well worth giving into temptation.
I’d have loved to have heard Alastair Cameron’s Yorkshire impression after a Websters or eight! I hope he didn’t do it during Dalesman’s Litany… (just joking!)
Might be making this up but I feel like I xsn gear Liam O’Flynn in the phrasing?
Hope that throat of yours is better soon.
Rebecca
Christy's reply
certainly Liam would have heard Pádraic’a phrasing…. possibly learned “Merrily Kiss The Quaker” from Seamus Ennis’s recording of Pádraic..
great news about a new recording appearing into the Trad Archive..I look forward to hearing that
Hi C, it seems only polite to answer. 1. Sacco and Vanzetti. 2. I m thinking 1913 Massacre (not 1916, although I ‘m very slow to contradict you ! ) 3. Ludlow Massacre 4. Pretty Boy Floyd. Is there a prize ??? Best of luck tonight at leath ama I guess you will sing ” Palestine ” to the Sold Out Game. there will be some buzz. It is good to see the welcome the Palestinian women have already received including a visit to the Aras to meet Pres Michael D Higgins. Beir bua agus beannacht. H

Hello Christy,
Sorry to post again so soon, but something has happened.
I’ve found something that points to the date Dalesman’s Litany was written.
It’s all about this line
I’ve seen snow fall on Bradford Beck as black as ebony
three a day..veg and fruit…live forever

What a lovely melody and beautiful setting yet a chilling song, i don’t suppose it gets aired much now though….
I dreamt of a curious eviction
Unlike the evictions of old
No sign of a redcoat nor bailiff
‘twas more pernicious and cold
On the air came a colourless vapour
The fields they felt silent and still
As I lay in that meadow of wildflower
Dreaming on Hanrahan’s hill
I was recently in the area myself and wondered what became of the farm and the livelihoods that arose from its pastures.
Rory
