Oh yes please! If anyone knows how to record Christy singing Palestine, and put it somewhere we can all get to, that would be brilliant.
Thanks for the Tom Lehrer stuff, Dave.
Love his songs. I first heard one of his songs in Manchester when I was 19. A sweet thing about Catholics if I’m remembering right.
‘Always predict the worst and you’ll be hailed as a prophet’…great quote from veteran satirist, musician ,Tom Lehrer…all over radio and TV for c 15 years from late 50s until early 70s…then he walked away from fame, returning to his genius for maths, taught at Uni s and is going strong at 96! I fondly recall the power of his songs and fully intend to hit the YouTube trail…
I’m reminded of him via a great piece in The Guardian…by writer,Francis Beckett, who has written a play about Lehrer, soon to run in London…Beckett’s website is good, but I think The Guardian piece and Beckett’s back story will interest many readers here.
I want to share with you this poem that someone gave to me:
In Palestinian childhood
Milestones are reversed:
the boy loses his leg
before he learns to walk
His voice is strained
by the time he says his first word
he never learns to smile.
At the age of weaning
his mouth tastes bitter hunger
he kicks the rubble of his home
before he kicks a ball
he attends a friend’s funeral
before a birthday party
and he dies
before his mother
Great to hear from hilary that the Southern part of Ireland will recognise Palestine, perhaps the influence of SF is at last wearing off on the other main parties, and could then the North of Ireland follow suit against the wishes of a Government in England?
Christy
I listened tonight to Ronnie Drew’s great singing of Shane MacGowan’s ‘ The Dunes’ and thought of all those innocents improperly buried in Gaza in recent months.
So i then listened to Mick Blake’s moving ‘anothet child’ and John Spillane’s ‘Palestine Sunbird’. 3 Writers of supreme talent, writing from the heart.
Rory
Hi C. I note that you wrote yesterday on this forum that ” I’m gonna be singing Jim Page’s “Palestine” on Virgin Media (TV3 ) on Wed night 10pm ” that’s great news. It’s a really powerful song with a very clear and direct message. The lines that stand out most starkly for me are ” what do you do when they come to your home
and they tell you your land is no longer your own
do you let them take it or do you dare to resist
standing in the road with a rock in your fist ”
It will be great to get it out on national TV. I do hope it will be available outside the Island, I m sure some tech nerd here will be able to record and share. Fair play to you. It’s also great news that the Irish Government are about to announce that it will recognise the State of Palestine, in the coming weeks. Beir bua agus beannacht. H
Hi Christy, I would like to share the music / video for A Piper Passing ( A Tribute to Liam Og O Flynn ) with you and your guestbook. With kindest regards. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jcrrFau0E54
Hello Christy,
I had a good night last night at the Topic Club Zoom session. Doing better with the nerves these days. Had my laptop balanced on top of a big pile of books to avoid the double child. That and kind lighting seemed to do the trick
The Contender and January Man
They hadn’t heard The Contender before, I was surprised.
Hi C. Following yesterdays post by Kevin Cowan I’m here listening to a lovely CD called Granite which was engineered by Kevin, and which features him singing with his uncles and others. It’s easy to see your influence on Kevin and his music, it includes The Contender, North and South, Pair of Brown Eyes. I think some years ago there was a session in Monaghan after one of your gigs with Kevin and Rory and Lar and maybe others and you joined in yourself, I missed that one. I remember well that Kevin and Rory both played for hours at the gaggle in Lisdoon. Speaking of Kevins the other Kevin Meehan and his band The Highstool Prophehts is just home after a very successful trip to Sold Out gigs in Glasgow and Edinburgh and have lots more gigs over the Summer. You are some role model for singers singing in their own accent and learning from your performances and your stage craft. Beir bua agus beannacht. H
What’s the Story Christy ??
Looks like Mad Mary from ‘Sail on Jimmy’ has migrated to a Dublin Disco 😜
An original Ballad about Ridin’ in honour of the Old School Ballads about Ridin’ 😳
Hi Christy, looking forward to hearing “In Palestine” tomorrow night on Virgin Media (TV3)
Great to hear talk of Wally in previous posts.. Picking up on KevinC’s name origins story; my mother told me when I arrived into the world in April of 1990, Daniel O Donnell was playing on the radio and the humming nurses with big smiles all round says “Oh you’ll have to call him Daniel..” (to be contd.)
Yes, I made it, along with 40000 others! Yesterday was a perfect sunny day. For me it was hard to walk the entire route and i was quite tired (the head is younger than the bones) but what does my physical pain means compaired to the pain of those I marched for. I did it, and I’ll do it again. Good Night Christy
I’m glad you like the video of Wally and Johnny. I wish I’d made more over the years but whenever I’m lucky enough to get to any gig I just like to watch. I miss him too but I was lucky to know him. I was listening to the Live At The Annesley House CD through a big speaker and if I close my eyes I can smell that upstairs room.
I’ve been looking through all my CDs of your work (albums and bootlegs) and I am starting the process of making them digital. Apple do their best to stop me but I’ve got them on the back foot now with a USB Superdrive that actually plays a CD 😀 It’s so lovely to listen to all your work. The soundtrack to my life.
Looking forward to seeing you on TV3!
Thanks, Kevin
PS. There are many Kevin’s out there! My parents stopped at Glendalough on their honeymoon in 1974 and my name was decided. A few years later a 9lb12oz bundle appeared who was able to drink a 10oz bottle before he left the hospital. The appetite never left me!
Hello Christy
I now I was a bit late to let you now I was coming. I posted it with your birthday wishes but Hilary reminded me that that wasn’t a good idee. But nevertheless we had a wonderfull evening sitting on the first row watching you giving the best of yourself. My old time favorite is Nancy Spain and you almost always play that. I would have loved to update our photo together once taken in Wexford…..
My sister met some Irish people in Spain Saturday and they were singing Beeswing! How great are the odds?
Anyway keep up the good spirits and we’ll meet again someday some place…
Love Chris
Hi Christy! I read here some posts ago that at an early stage in your career, you sang among others, Mister Bojangles. Wow, I thought, I’d love to hear Christy sing that.
Well, Thursday I was at the graduation ceremony for our son, Christo. A fun ceremony, no caps and gowns like in Ireland, lots if fun videos with students pics from the study years, a couple if speeches, some wise words, and a professional singer entertaining us all, and getting the 160 medical graduates to sing….among other songs, Muster Bojangles! So there I was watching my son Christo D singing along, and thinking of Christy M singing the same song! A fun life!
Hi christy,
My son Charlie, an avid fan, sent this link for you as he thinks you may have stayed there after playing the Carbeth Inn?
Hope it brings a smile, whether correct, remembered or not.
I can neither confirm nor deny….some gigs in 60s 70s 80s have faded into the blur..certain clubs remain firmly set in my mind, other memories have faded with time
Here’s what is says
Getz and Company, a stuff manufacturer located on Thornton Road, wrote in 1871 that the beck ‘stinks continually…and is in fact perfectly black’.
Well done Christy.
Great to hear “Palestine ” live on National TV .
