Maidin mhaith a Christy, looking forward to hearing your voice drift up and over the Stranmillis (sweet stream) Embankment. Will be there with my son Stephen (Sail on Jimmy lyrics) and Maggie and, if Nancy Spain is on the set list would love if you would sing it for my granddaughter Nainsí Shannon. Nothing ventured Grma Mary.

Road songs….
Was listening to some Guy Clark this morning, one of his fine songs is LA Freeway and it got me thinking about road songs.
Billy Bragg A13 is a belter and his take on route 66.
Lyle Lovatt has a gorgeous song Road to Ensenada.
Probably my favourite is Saw Doctors powerful but personal N17.
Have you any in your locker Christy?
Or fellow 4711ers?

Hello Christy,
Saw a film called The Job of Songs the other day. All about the music, people and culture of West Clare. I wholeheartedly recommend it to all here. It’s a gem.
Since the earlier post,I’ve been on a Watersons/Carthy fest…via vinyl and YouTube …just watched a gem of a programme on the ‘tube
Martin Carthy,BBC Newcastle,Northern Arts…1986. Insights of a performer’s life and great shots of his genius guitar work…I’m lucky to have played on his support bill a few times and chatted to him…a scholar and a gent… D
Well Christy, I just bought a couple of tickets for the Wolfe Tones at Finsbury Park for 5th July. It’s the day after the general election so if the result goes right (by right I mean left) it could end up being a hooley and a half. I might not get home for a week, so was wondering whether to bring a spare pair of underpants and a tooth brush with me, what do you think?
You’re dead on about The Watersons…Eliza , Martin Carthy and Marry Waterson carry the torch now…Thankfully,I saw the mighty original lineup in the early 70s,shaking the floor of The Lesser Free Trade Hall.
There’s an interesting Peggy Seeger gig lined up in Salford.. part of http://www.weinventedtheweekend.com (Sat 15/6 and Sun 16/6) I’m trying to find a time, but looks like she’ll be playing on the Sunday…a great mix of free events on the plaza by Media City. Its being hyped up as part of a documentary being made about ‘Dirty Old Town’ Ewan wrote it to be featured in his 1949 play,’Landscape with chimneys’…apparently,a verse was dropped because of a scanning issue. So,for the Salford gig,to be filmed,Peggy will perform the song as originally intended, with the discarded verse. No doubt, she’ll give an interesting story too…
Hi Christy,
As the Big Yin said about algebra (1a + 1b)
Why would they try to teach us it
When we have no fucking intention of ever going there.
Enjoy the Belfast tomorrow

On this bright spring-like morning, first of June, I’m reminded of a tale, the Fainne. A man, he’d landed in Hong Kong but whatever happened, he had no money and no way of contacting anyone. Way back in the days of no plastic cards nor mobile phones. He was wondering what would he do? The footpaths were thronged with people walking to and fro. But he looked, he spotted a chap, he walked over to him and addressed him and said ‘hello’ and they got talking and the man was able to assist him. “How did you spot me and knew I spoke English?” “You’ve a Fainne on your lapel……” he told him. So the Fainne came to the rescue.
Hey Christy,
Looking forward to Botanic Gardens. Made up I got an extra – hen’s tooth – ticket for son (Ciarán McAteer) visiting from Vancouver. Last time he was over we got along to Vicar St (Dec 22) and that gig was amazing, the highlight of his visit. Roll on Sunday!
Christy's reply
great that You’ll be there with your Son
two great cities, Belfast & Vancouver…I love ’em both
I never experienced a gig with my Da
hope ye have a right good blast
I’m looking forward to it myself
its a first
played outdoor gigs before but always as part of a Festival
The modh coinnealeach and the tuiseal ginneadeach, dont they sound like farming practices termed in Irish. Tuiseal ginneadeach, sounds like something you’d do to a goat! That language that most of us never learnt to speak and got put off it and only a small appreciation left for it. Those tenses are easier learned in other languages. Today’s education lesson now ceases.
Oh, and I know now, how to put those dots on ùü.

Listened to The Mandolin Mountain (Tony Small). Beautiful bardic song. Adding it to a list of songs I sing around the house (Green Island, The Wandering Song of Aonghus, Well below the Valley). Me and the Fran will be joining a folk session or two with these in mind. Thank you again.

theres me talkng about Perth in the next post !!!
4 good songs you got going there Derek
got me thinking
I must try and do a gig sometime with a set of songs that I love to sing..ones that seldom,if ever, get rendered
I hope you are well. Hilary tells me the last message with 2 links is lost in the ether so here I go again!
I managed to get my videos of the Wally Page and Johnny Mulhern gig online. Baz McSherry plays at the interval too. Hard to believe this was 17 years ago! It was December 2007 in the Rotterdam Bar in Belfast. Not the most plush of venues but I was at many great gigs there.
I was going to split it up but it’s nice to see the full flow and hear the banter between songs. This was a fun project with nice memories but I can see why we don’t use tapes any more! I’ll post the links separately.
Morning Christy
Tonight,Richard Thompson and band are in town.Playing at a much hyped venue, opened last year .I’ve been and it’s terrific, but I’m not going tonight….for the sole reason that the ticket prices are a piss take….In a few hours,I’ll regret the decision more than I do now, but, hey…
I wanted to put my decision in context, rather than rant…mainly to praise RTs astounding song,Beeswing….as we know here, superbly, played by your good self,I first heard RT play it on a solo gig, before the epic was released. The song ended, total silence before The Free Trade Hall erupted in applause….As part of his solo spot on band gigs,I hope Richard still plays the song. Its always a gem…if any readers here, see one of the tour gigs,I’d love to see a mini review here.
If you get chance to comment,I’d love to know if you’ve ever considered adding your mojo to any other Thompson/Fairport related songs.
Enjoy the day
Dave

I have attempted a few of Richard’s but failed to gain entry….years back “Galway To Graceland” …another time “God Loves a Drunkard”…Norma Waterson slayed me with her version…what a great singer is Norma….all three Watersons now in that heavenly choir
I first hear them with Cousin John in The Pennines Folk Club at Hyde F.C.in 1967
Morning Christy,
As i lie waiting to rise the wife has been snoring full pelt since 5.
It reminds me of Mike Waterson’s song A stitch in time.
Now i shall be neither getting out the needle nor the collander i hasten to add. However when i have seen you sing it you do so unaccompanied, like weekend in amsterdam etc.
Is A Stitch still in the repatoire, and does it give you an extra thrill to step forward to the edge of the stage and belt one out, free of the constraints of a band or even a guitar?
Anyway she is slowing down now, the imaginary race she was running must be over, i can hear the array of sparrows and crows out the window waiting for their breakfast, must get up.

in recent years I’ve been doing the occasional accapella… “Stitch” “Tamlaghtduff” “Ru” is regular but that has the Drum….just remembered ..been doing “Black & Amber” and “Lemon Sevens” accapella too
I posted a message yesterday with footage of a Wally Page gig. It had 2 YouTube links in it and it hasn’t posted. It says “Your comment is awaiting moderation.” Hopefully you can see and get the links. If you can’t I’ll try to post again.
Hi Christy,
Having no control of the horses
is one of the reasons we keep coming back.
No two nights have ever been the same.
Good to hear that the fad ceirnín is nearly there.
Always thought fair dues to any singer or group that could knock ten or so tunes into shape for a record.
But a thirteen tracker – you’re on fire.
Still trying to hang onto the bit of Irish.
Should have been shown how to speak it and not learn it.
With their modh coinníollachs and their tuiseal ginideachs. Might as well have given a book to a dog.
