I hope the gig went well and you avoided the deluge that hit here…
Over 50 years ago,I watched as you played a great set in a folk festival marquee in Platt Fields…yesterday,I was in a smaller marquee, about a mile from the park,in the heart of the Uni campus. Events set up to mark 200 years of Uni type education in Manchester/ linked to the Histories festival too…
Gratitude to organisers and Michael Wood…local bloke, top academic,TV historian etc…and an example of how to make history interesting, without gimmicks…Michael’s morning talk focused on the radical history of the city, melding into the current mix…Peterloo was mentioned in detail and he said that there’d be an afternoon session of singing and music,re Manchester Ballads….that was my main motive for going to the day,the ace morning was a bonus!
It turned out to be a superb gig and I’ll post about it later…but,at lunchtime,I took the wet walk to Central Library where I plundered flyers and publicity from stalls there…I realised at the time that (no surprise)there’s a good focus on Irish history/links to the city…many have contact websites…also,International Brigade …rather than drone on(!) too long here,if anyone wants details of what I picked up,please e mail
Back for music chat later…in the meantime,as a taster…anyone near YouTube, check out ‘Victoria Bridge on a Saturday Night’,by Edward 11 (second)band, the singer, Glen Latouche …

Danny, It must be a relief to get back on dry land, I almost went to America a few years back on a freighter but good sense prevailed when I was offered a gig in Grangemockler..then followed a concert in Knocktopher..the back office went on a run and extended it into a tour taking in Lyracrompane, Grangecon, Lissacasey,Knocknagoshel,Killeshandra,Manorhamilton and Newtownmountkennedy…..we pulled out all the stops on that one….tickets walked out the door (before Ticketmaster hit town)…driving thru Sneem recently I noticed a tour from that poster still adorned the Post-Mistress’s shop window alongside dead bluebottles and a faded Old Moore’s Almanac…Oh God be with the days of the hard ticket…speaking of which…I miss the posters….back in the day we’d scour the town looking for sight of a poster…..it was always a killer blow when the posters arrived during the sound check….48 years ago I was playing in (contd p94)

My partner (Sean) and I try to go see you live a couple of times a year if we can! I bought the tickets for tonight’s gig for Sean’s 30th birthday. We would love to hear you sing Victor Jara, it’s one of our favourites and one we have never heard you sing live.
Looking forward to this show and the many more to come.

Hello Christy,
I’m trying to answer Danny’s question about young musicians.
One band I’ve been listening to pretty regularly these last few months is The Mary Wallopers. They’re a band that emerged during the lockdown, doing live stream sessions from home.
They are raw, rude and rambunctious, and very political. Maybe somewhere between The Dubliners and The Pogues.
They’d be worth having a listen to.
Some of my favourites are
Cod liver oil and orange juice
Wexford
Lots of Little soldiers
The gates of heaven.
I dont think Hamish wrote it, but his version remains unsurpassed and made the song popular…
Fair play to The Wallopers for reviving it here… I think the late Jim McCann used to play it betimes
O Glory Hallelujah
First time visit…meanwhile…
Can members here please indulge me…who are some of the “newer” artists now bringing new edge & new songs – & new interpretations of existing pearlers?
It can be a trap to think it’s all been said & done & that the likes of Christy, Finbar, Clancys etc are the only true spirit
I’d be grateful to suss ‘em out…

Hi Christy
I am lucky enough to be in the Netherlands with wife and stepson for a few days.
I was getting a bit down thinking about the rise of the far right in the euro elections, including here among the dutch.
As a pick me up i turned on youtube and put on Declan McLaughlin’s wonderful song RISE with its inspirational video.
I Let it run on into his film
The sound of an Underground
It hosts, amongst fine brief interviews and songs a great version of No Time For Love.
I sent a message of thanks and in his usual understated way Decie just reminded me that we must Keep on Keeping on.
Well done Decie.
