I’m getting ready for a morning event with Peggy Seeger…there was a good context piece in the Manchester Evening News about Dirty Old Town. And a fab quote from Peggy…
‘I don’t think folk song is going to save the world…I think it’ll help people to survive the changes:’
Hello Christy,
Made a list of songs my few chords will cover. Quite a few there. I’ll be getting into Sail on Jimmy when I get up. Been playing Wandering Aengus, . Thinking of two years ago, a trip to the Leeside. A beautiful gig in the big airy tent. It sounds like nowhere else.
Hello Christy. The morning after the night 🌙 before. Last night’s gig at the marquee will live long in our memories. Song after song serenaded by the crowd Myself my cousin Michael.Tony his sister and daughter Sean Cavanagh and family enjoyed every minute of the gig
A very special thanks to Hilary for all she does for us 4711ERS.A live cd of a night at the marquee would crown it all.Next stop Monk’s Lane for my usual Sunday treat. Thanks again Christy
Sweet music roll on.Looking forward to the INEC next week.Rebels abu.

I could see very little last night…just an occasional glimpse of the vast auditorium when the room lit up between numbers…. I spotted you once, great to see a few familiar faces on the front row….heard you too…very few already know the lyrics of the new songs….at one point I spotted my two grand-nephews Luke and Evin….that was special…and there too was John Spillane…mortified was I when I failed to sing the opening line of his song “Patrick Murphy, Fisherman” , I’d been practicing it earlier, I could not remember the opening melody….but there was a good result when his “Gortatagort” came to mind and rolled out seamlessly…one of my fave songs to sing….then to see John’s presence so welcomed by the audience…part of a Magic Night in The Big Marquee…give my love to The Monk’s Lane crew and dont be getting gravy on your shirt
Hi Christy,
Paul Bell is my name. I sent an Email to Paddy Doherty but I was hoping you could do me a turn. You know my granny Sheila Bell , minded you when you were young! I was wondering could you give a shoutout to someone in Killarney next Friday!
Christy's reply
your Grandmother Sheila was a lovely Lady whom I well remember….your Grandfather Billy was always kind to me when my Father died in 1956….both of them stalwarts in the Moorefield GFC Club. Billy masterminded our promotion to becoming a Senior club and was at the helm when we won our first Senior Championship in the early 1960s… I remember it like it was last Sunday… a damp and dirty day when “The Rags” came to St Conleth’s Park to be defeated by our Moorefield 15….Dinny, Skinner, JIm McDermott, Johnny Gibson, Jimmy Cummins, Fido, Doggy, Paddy Moore, Harry Fay, Garda Joe Moran, Capt Dave Stapleton, Narky Farrell, James “The Ba” Dowling, such excitement up the Town as the cup was carried and repeatedly filled in Hugh Neeson’s…there was no closin time that night and the poor auld cup suffered a few dinges
Hi christy. You sang some songs to my mother when she was terimally ill Geraldine o’kane. We still cherish the video. Her father who is your greatest fan and calls himself the music man is now termilaly ill and we would love to replicate what happened for my mother. Would pay of course but would love to see my grandfather smile at your songs. I don’t know if you remember him paddy mckillen but if you could help in any way. Even a autograph or a video would mean the world. He has even album and every song you’ve written. Beat wishes Liam okane.
Hi Christy,
Another magic night in the NCH. This time out Roseanne Cash took to the stage supported by Aoife O’Donovan and The New Café Orchestra. She tore through her back pages accompanied by her husband guitar virtuoso – John Leventhall.
It was all bubbling along nicely but when she introduced her
special guest Paul Brady. Well I thought I heard someone say
please. They finished up with Forty Shades of Green which brought the house down and everyone to their feet.
Turns out the shalimar mentioned in the song is a perfume
that Johnny bought for June back in the day – who knew ?
Proceeds from the night went to the musical treatment foundation so all good. Just thinking how bad if a
live version of The Big Marque from The Big Marque finished out side two of the forthcoming fad ceirnin ?
Enjoy the night

about 15 years ago I heard Roseanne and Paul sing the Forty Shades in Vicar St…it was spine tingling…
tension rising here at The Marquee ( in the dressing room anyway !)
Hi Christy!
Big gang of 18 (O’Donnells, Bradys and Callaghans) headed over from Manchester to see you at the Marquee tonight to celebrate my mum’s 70th. We’d love a shout out for her – Rosaleen O’Donnell, if it’s not too late, but we’ve been busy murdering pints of stout!
We’re all big fans of yours, my mum and her siblings from way back when, in Crumpsall, Manchester (1960s/70s), with Mike Harding in the folk clubs!
Good luck for tonight!
Christy's reply
welcome to The Crumpsall crew
theres a longlist of callout requests
yours is gone into the tombola
Hi Christy, I’m bringing my 18 year old daughter to see you in the marquee tonight, this is her first time seeing you. Is there any chance you would give her a shout out. Her name is Lucy Wiggins from east cork.
Motherland was the song we were listening to as we brought her home the day after she was born and it is still one of ours and her favourite.
Looking forward to tonight,
Cheers,
Alan.

Hope ye have a good one..lets see if Natalie Merchants song emerges..I’ve no set list tonight…its all on the hoof
Good morning Christy hope all is well today!Ryan Ward here from Newfoundland, back over across the pond to see you once again! Last time I seen you play was back in May of 2019 up in Letterkenny, you played Sonny’s Dream for us at my request via this message board! Me and my Girlfriend (now wife) had such an unbelievable time when we left we both said we had to get back to see you again! Well we are back again, after driving around the whole country in the last week or more, up the connor pass, down threw the gap of dunlo, into Dingle for the night!!,we are in Cork and cannot wait to see and hear you play! Back in 2019 we were in the front row, tonight well be in the very back, but we would sit on the roof it meant getting to hear you again! Looking forward to tonight!
Ryan!

Welcome to The Banks Ryan…almost showtime here…..lets see if Ron Hynes features tonight…
A wee bit dick gaughan for the day.
Please dont think i was questioning your side Christy, your support for good causes is unquestioned…..its the rest of us that need to ask the question most days in these troubled times.
Rory
Christy's reply
always heart warming to hear Dick Gaughan…Thanks Rory
Hi Christy,
Really enjoyed “Job of songs” on RTE last night, some amazing people , with great stories and music ability…….including you very own Anne, and Barry. https://www.rte.ie/player/movie/job-of-songs/436683816141
Best of luck down by the Lee in the Tent, hope you enjoy every moment.

Doolin was beautifully framed by this wonderful film….so many magic moments observed and captured… three members of my Family being part of the film which brought an extra personal (unexpected ) dimension….great insights shared, the raw bar included and the highs and lows of the music maker laid bare..
I reckon I’ll have to watch it again
P.S. just read that Taylor Swift had 16 costume changes during her concert at Anfield last night so you might want to pack one or two extra tee shirts. Also if your considering any crowd surfing tomorrow night make sure the audience are on board otherwise they could just pass you out the door and down the road instead of returning you to the stage.
Christy, from the banks of the Mersey to the banks of the Lee, good luck in the tent tomorrow night, and ‘keep your groundsheet rolled up tight’.(I’m a poet and I didn’t know it)

Christy's reply
good question Rory…..a hard one to answer in these tricky, multi-faceted times….but lets give it a shot
Hello Christy,
The guitar is a wonderful thing. I’ve been struggling for a while, turning to the drink. Had to abandon evening gigs altogether, I was drinking 2 bottles of wine a night. Steve knew, but i was hiding it from everyone else, cancelling things.
And then the guitar turned up.
I wanted so much to play it. The first thing that happened was I wanted to practice morning and afternoon on a Sunday. So I stopped the booze on a Sunday lunchtime.
It’s gone on from there. I’ve managed to get it down to one glass of wine per day and I’m sticking to it. I can do this. I didn’t know whether I’d be able to, but I can.
So, I’ve got every evening when I can play now, if I want to.
I’m going to the Topic Zoom session on Monday night. Hope to be there in person soon.
14 bottles of wine a week is so expensive! What was I thinking!

Hi Christy,
Last year I asked for your help so my wife would be able to use the Henry Flanagan sculpture as an inspiration for a sculpture of her own. You kindly sent us detailed pictures of the sculpture and yourself. You can see the result of her work here: https://kensen.nl/bib2023.html
Thanks again for you support.
Christy's reply
delighted to see Henry’s work reflected in Joan’s sculpture… Henry would be enchanted to see this ….Thanks for sharing
