Hi C. So who remembers where they were on this day in 1994 ? the day of the most celebrated Goal in Irish sporting history !! I love to look around at the audience when you sing that line to see the cheers and fists in the air, amazing !! Only you could get that reaction 30 years later, almost matching the excitement of the commentator !!! https://www.rte.ie/archives/2014/0618/624448-ireland-1-italy-0-1994-world-cup/ Beir bua agus beannacht. Hello Christy,
It was the Topic Club Zoom session last night. So I set up the harp, microphone and laptop and did a bit of singing and listening.
Parting Glass and Foxy Devil. We do two rounds, so they aren’t done together, they’d ve a pretty weird combination done together, but separate seems ok .
One of the guys sang a song that Martin Cathy’s done. I need to track it down. It was all about a group of lads who go to the beer shop. They get thrown out and one of them ends up in the cells. They pawn their vests to bail him, but on the way they pass the beer shop. One thing leads to another and they all end up in jail for 30 days.
Does this ring a bell with anyone here?
The other week,we shared praise about Rochdale’s ace ballad/broadside singer,Jennifer Reid…who had also worked with Edward 11 band.
Jenn is doing an hour of singing on Thursday at The Portico Library central M/cr…starting at 6pm….bugger of a time as I may well miss it…Grandad duties! But,I’ve not fully ruled it out…£5 on the door,or book online.
It’s a great place, worth the climb of flights of stairs! Jenn also guesting on Eliza Carthy’s tour. Fair play to her. D
Some final reflections on the Seeger/MacColl epic…
Peggy’s warm kindness in agreeing to a one to one chat before a busy day…after the gig,she was surrounded by well wishers/ had to be gently nudged away by Calum and BBC guy…they had the doc to finish and 6 hour drive home…
Their raise for Ewan as a songwriter. Knowing just when to finish a song…written like plays…
Fab imagery in the dropped verse from Dirty Old Town…but the song didn’t need it! They had a great bluesy rhythm on the gig…as Calum’s Osbourne guitar rang out,fab to see Peggy, relaxed (despite her arthritis) with eyes closed…penny for her thoughts?
Asked about Ewan as a Dad,Calum said he was terrific and very warm…Calum’s electric guitar had been a ‘bourgeois’ step too far,but great memories of his Dad’s spoken and singing voice…and the Salford accent that often appeared…
Afterwards,I was thinking of your great covers of Ewan songs…and wondering if there are any on the production line?
I had a late YouTube trawl and settled on the final song of the day….Richard Thompson and ‘Salford Sunday’ – magic…
Hi Christy, regarding your recent comments on reviews …… well, even an old dog needs and likes a pat now and then …… and this old dog thinks that you deserve every one of them.
Christy i do not think i have ever read a bad review of you which is an enormous testament to your connection with people , whether arty types, rebs, old or young, musos or cynics indeed the small band of ‘rather stayed home and watched the late late show’ have become extinct.
Well in.
Rory
Ps
I must have been ill as i think i have slept for a month.
Not only must the invasion of gaza and the war in ukraine have ended, the general election must be over and cost of living crisis been fixed but ingerland seem to have beaten the world number 1 team and must have won the euros judged by the news.
Hi Christy , we are still buzzing here after your wonderful gig in the marquee last night, my sister 2nd time seeing you in 39 years and her daughter first time … it most definitely won’t be there last ,thanks to you and all the crew for making it a memorable gig .. the sound was unreal .. also great to meet up with all 4711ers .. so roll on next Friday in the kingdom, safe travels , Tony …..

9 35 this morning. Getting off the tram near the festival stage….A great Hank Williams song on the breeze…Calum and Peggy on the soundcheck pre 11 30 gig!
Perfect…I met them off the stage and Peggy said she was happy to chat…we went to their nearby hotel for a cuppa in reception. Walking past shiny, modern buildings, ahe graphically described the harsh contrast of docks that were there in 1956….her first visit with Ewan. Now she’s not touring so much, she’s admittedly nostalgic for the old road trips, she felt like she knew area of England…
I asked her to sign a booklet and passed on your best…she’s inscribed your greeting…
Love to Christy,my longtime fellow traveller…’
She has a twinkle in her eye and mischief in her voice…I could have stayed for hours, but left too soon. Gig time approached! D
I had the enormous pleasure of seeing you in Cork last night with one of my friends. You surely got us going and the singing along for some of the songs was the best I’ve ever heard. Really looking forward to booking in again later in the year
Fantastic gig
Fair play to you
Oscar
I keep getting zapped after a few minutes of typing…Peggy Seeger sends her love and I had a brilliant chat with her…plus seeing superb Qand A/gig…I’ll add bits and pieces as my link goes bust,if not careful…
Lots of info to share …happy for email and photos to anyone interested…
Hi C. Congrats on another triumphant return to the Big Marquee, you hardly drew a breath and you even stopped the wind & rain and the sun shone !! The Rebels gave you a great welcome from the very start, they obviously love you and your music. Your generosity in welcoming John Spillane was wonderful. The big songs went down really well Lyra, Rosalita & Jack Cambell, They Never Came Home , Snowflakes but of course The Big Marquee was so well received, packed in tight as we all were in that big Circus Tent. The attention to the quieter songs was intense Gortagort, Sonnys Dream and The Voyage, some young people were singing The Voyage on the way back to the city along Centre Park Road !! I ‘m sure the people who travelled from Newfoundland and the UK and other places will have made great memories. The Review from De Paper that Patsy shared really gets the magic. Again tribute needs to be paid to your crew it can’t be an easy gig, without walls and a roof but the sound was excellent as was the lighting and the big screens. Plenty of staff on site too, so no delays and great hospitality. The Kingdom awaits, only 5 more sleeps, some of the Rebel front row will travel West !! have a great week. Beir bua agus beannacht. H
Christy's reply
When I go out to sound check at 5 o’clock the marquee seems vast… a long way from where I started out …but come 8 o’clock the audience create such a fantastic atmosphere that the vastness shrinks and it becomes close and personal….I’m always amazed when people write that I do not like audience participation….the audience singing last night was truly magnificent, when required the listening was inspirational…new songs well recieved , old chestnuts welcomed and celebrated….
Thank You
Great to read the positive reviews from the Marquee. Seems to be one of those special venues that brings its own atmosphere. Listening to an interesting interview with Niamh Dunne last night about Paddy Keenan and Mickey Dunne’s Barrel Top Wagon Tour from Boyle to Fintown in Donegal to celebrate the contribution of the Travellers to our musical culture. Brought to mind that amazing gig with the Grehan Sisters in Boyle to celebrate John Reilly- one of those special nights which will be in my mind forever. Love how the music songs link us so much to people and places. Thank you for the links you have forged in that chain – we should never forget that.
I’ve heard it said that some players never read reviews…
I love a tincture of good feedback
if I get a kick in the arse I turn the other cheek ,pick up the guitar, sing, practice, prepare
Nor do I harbour resentment…Liam Fay gotta earn a crust too !
you can bate an egg but you cant bate a good review

Gives context to the new version of Dirty Old Town ,recently recorded by Peggy Seeger with orchestra.and featured in a forthcoming radio doc.
it was played on the festival PA and is powerful.
Today’s Q and A with Peggy and Calum put the song in the spotlight, but there are a few good online pieces published recently… D
